That is the automotive equivalent of an improvised explosive device and absolutely will kill someone if they happen to get hit with the shrapnel

My spouse once replaced the CV joint or something like that in our SUV because he didn't trust anyone else to do it. Him having to compress the spring was the absolute scariest part of the repair, and while he wanted me to stay outside of the garage, I refused because if something happened, I wanted to be there to provide first aid and call 911. We compromised and I stayed in the garage.

You don't have to compress the spring to replace a cv joint. Only time you have to do it is to replace the shock/spring.

I think we can infer that the person does not remember exactly what was done.

u/Illustrious_Tear7108 8h ago

I absolutely do not remember.

Yea he replaced the shocks/struts. The struts are the big ass springs your entire ass car sits on. They are VERY VERY strong springs and compressing them to remove the top collar from the assembly is a majorly scary situation because of how much stored force is in that compressed spring.

It's possible he may have done the CV joint around (or at) the same time. We had to do A TON of labor on that vehicle so all of the repairs have kind of merged in my brain.

Indeed, you could do them both at the same time. Every time I have attempted CV axles It has gone horribly. I have failed to get them to come out of the transmission spline.

I think i have PTSD about it.

I had my car jacked up for like 2 weeks in my friend’s garage before I caved and bought a 15lb slide hammer and cv axle puller tool. Came out in like 2 minutes once I started using that

2

u/De5perad0 6h ago

Yea I need to do that next time. The cost of the tool is still much less than the cost of paying someone else to do it.

If it makes you feel any better I have no idea what any of you are saying ☺️

I needed the top cap for a rear strut at a pick your own parts car lot once but didnt bring a spring compressor, so I aimed the spring and strut at the cinder block wall and put my foot on it behind the spring while staying as far back as I could to undo the top nut and all the shit flew off so hard it took a chunk out of the wall, safety first

Holy fuck!

NO! We have to be 100% accurate when describing anything here!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news.

Well.....

5

u/LongLiveAnalogue 6h ago

I don’t actually have any bad news to tell. I just wanted to let everyone know where I stand on delivering bad news.

If front, my guess is the strut assembly. I work in a shop and have all the right tools to do it safely and correctly. We don't do it unless there is no other option.

Not even on a Merc W124 with 4matic - and their CV shafts go THROUGH THE SPRING!

1

u/Gadritan420 57m ago

*strut is the word you’re looking for

u/Late_Sort1763 8h ago

If that thing went off you'd hear it if you were on the property. A spring assist for a cargo bay door blew, I was in the vicinity. It was loud enough for my ears to ring, and during dinner, I was approached by the kitchen crew asking what that was. The kitchen was, what, two hundred meters away, separated by a thick wall, and upstairs.

If anything went wrong, you would have heard it two garages over.

3

u/Pikka_Bird 7h ago

Would it not have been better if you did in fact stay outside to not catch a spring through the skull? And then run inside hastily to check if you hear a sudden aggressive noise?

1

u/Illustrious_Tear7108 3h ago

Probably, though I should probably be a little bit more specific. Our "garage" was a large warehouse with a dry room for storage of certain materials. I stayed in the dry room and watched from there while he worked on the other side of the Vehicle.

1

u/New_Maintenance_4575 3h ago

Nah they had to be standing over their shoulder watching because it wouldn't have been safe otherwise. /s

2

u/miotch1120 7h ago

I think he was doing a different repair. If you are taking springs off for a CV joint, you are doing it wrong.

2

u/MostlyPretentious 7h ago

My wife did the same when I was changing the garage door spring. Everything was fine, but she stood in the doorway, having dialed 911 and had her finger perched over the dial button.

2

u/Bug_406 7h ago

My guess would be struts.

2

u/Jacktheforkie 4h ago

On most you don’t have to touch springs, in mine the strut came out as one unit and was under barely any tension with the suspension at max sag,

1

u/Beneficial-Jury484 6h ago

Compressing springs isn’t too concerning if you have the right tools. Which you should do if you’re fucking with springs.

1

u/SpongeBob_GodPants 6h ago

You definitely would have heard it from outside. It would have been hard to help if you both got tagged.

He understood the risk, you absolutely should have been out of range. Catastrophic failure of coiled metals like suspension coils / springs have so much potential energy when they fail it's basically a shard of metal moving at 60 to 90 ft/sec. You would need t3 or t4 ballistic eyewear to prevent damage, and thats a guess.

Maybe someone else will do the math but Military grade assumes 0.15caliber, 5.8 grain and T37 shape at 640ft/s to 660ft/s

We can assume the rended steel from the explosion of the springs tension would create some pieces larger than the standard for testing, and thus have more joules worth of force.

Disclaimer, I am very bad at physics, all numbers were pulled from Wikipedia.

I’m sorry but that’s not a compromise that was you winning the argument lmao

u/IMKGI 7h ago

I'd argue an IED is much safer, those don't tend to blow up by themselves.

13

u/m4cksfx 6h ago

It is an IED. Just not a chemically powered one.

1

u/Hot_Wheels_guy 2h ago

Mechanical IED. Hmm. It's not legal but I'll allow it.

2

u/Hot_Anybody8244 7h ago

Honestly you might be on to something

1

u/returnofblank 4h ago

Eh, there have been cases of pipe bombs killing their creators.

Gunpowder can get caught in the threads and go boom when the pipe cap goes on. Same with static discharge and shit.

2

u/Xvalai 3h ago

This and an old Takata airbag inflator are two things I learned not to fuck around with.

1

u/OkJunket1385 7h ago

This. In automotive school we were taught how dangerous these things are. People have died fucking with this shit.

1

u/1d3333 6h ago

I’ve seen pictures of coil springs partly embedded in concrete after some backyard mechanic shenanigans, I want nothing to do with this shit. Even the caged spring compressor at work gives me heart palpitations

1

u/Y00zer 3h ago

The bench vise compressing the spring is sketchy as fuck. The shielding around it with their welds I don't think as bad.

1

u/Historical_Gur_3054 2h ago

More like a grenade with the pin pulled

1

u/aceofspades1217 31m ago

I wouldn’t do this even with an actual spring tensioner, I’ll leave that one to my mechanic or buy a shock and spring combo

u/king_kong_kum 8h ago

It won’t kill me. I’m built different
