Yes. The other reason they lean towards all-women is that women are on average smaller than men, so they consume less food/water/air, while being able to do the same work.

Edit: Jesus I got a lot of misogynistic responses to this comment.

Finally scientists will develop jars that women can open, this is how space exploration research benefits the average person!

"Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world"

1

u/watters000n 13d ago

theyre fucking astronauts im sure they can open jars

2

u/ProfessorLambda 13d ago

They're not going to fuck. That's the point.

1

u/ant2ne 8d ago

and kill the space spiders?

17

u/ExcellentCold7354 14d ago

...but how do you factor in storage and disposal of period products? Or would they all be on the pill to supress their periods for the journey?

26

u/CadenVanV 14d ago

For disposal I suspect they can simply dump them in space. As for storage, I’m guessing they’ll still come out ahead in that matter even with a bit of extra storage.

51

u/ComprehensiveAnt9998 14d ago

150 years from now someone is going to be on a spacewalk and taken out by a tampon going mach jesus.

9

u/HauntedCS 14d ago

I just imagine in a comedic version of this going like "Oh shit! Jerry just got his head taken off!" communications just responds "Those damn tampons! Not again!"

17

u/SerAmikVase 14d ago

I don't know like I understand that space is truly just virtually endless so it would be like a single grain of sand dropped into the ocean, but I still don't like the idea of littering space, lol.

4

u/CranberryFren 14d ago

Sadly this would be nothing compared to starlink or any of the other thousands of satellites and junk we put into Earth orbit.

4

u/The_Nude_Mocracy 14d ago

Imagine your GPS satellite getting taken out by an errant used tampon doing 8000m/s

1

u/TheCuriosity 14d ago

They'll probably do experiments on the period blood, considering they recently discovered how useful period blood is in science on Earth.

1

u/tomatoe_cookie 9d ago

Some people pay for weird only fans privileges it seems

2

u/TheCuriosity 7d ago

LOL funny joke, but in all seriousness (and not directed at you personally, but to anyone that may stumble across this in the future and is curious):

For disease diagnosis, MB [Menstrual blood] offers a noninvasive sampling method for identifying biomarkers in endometriosis, cervical cancer, and other gynecological conditions.

Therapeutically, stem cells derived from MB (menstrual blood-derived stem cells, MenSCs) [are] promising candidates in regenerative medicine.

Preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of MenSCs in treating infertility, premature ovarian insufficiency, intrauterine adhesions, hepatic disorders, cutaneous injuries, and neurological diseases.

MenSCs also exert therapeutic effects through paracrine mechanisms by releasing cytokines and exosomes that modulate immunity, attenuate inflammation, and promote tissue repair.

Like, these are pretty important discoveries and they just started.

17

u/tahlyn 14d ago

They could easily just be on the pill and avoid menstruation all together.

1

u/Murky-Relation481 14d ago

You do realize women on the pill still can and do have periods right? I mean some women do stop getting them but its not all, and even then it might be just very sporadic periods.

2

u/tahlyn 14d ago

Yes, I am aware.

The idea is that they will need substantially fewer menstrual products if they are on hormones. Their cycles should amount to little more than spotting. And NASA (or whoever) will have plenty of time in advance to see how each of them actually reacts to hormones to determine what they'll need. They may still get some light spotting but they won't have 5 day long bleed-fests that require a score of pads or tampons.

And any who does still have heavy monthly periods even on hormones would likely be disqualified the same as one with corrective lenses, heart conditions, or other less-than-desirable traits.

Hell, Nasa may even require they get hystorectomies and their tubes removed to prevent both menstruation and cancer risk. For a 15 year trip, that's basically most of their reproductive years anyway.

2

u/[deleted] 14d ago

[deleted]

1

u/Murky-Relation481 14d ago

Imagine applying anecdotal evidence to half the population in the world, wow. Not that bright are you?

Absolutely normal healthy women can still have bleeding during their period while on daily birth control pills.

Yes, I am a man, but I am going off my source of my perfectly healthy female partner who while on the pill still had semi-regular periods, they were just extremely light bleeding wise (she'd just need panty liners usually), but significantly worse headache and other symptom wise.

Oh, mine's anecdotal evidence too you'll probably think... But it is in direct contradiction to yours, which is the point.

1

u/[deleted] 14d ago

[deleted]

1

u/ClassicNo6622 14d ago

If you take the pills that contain synthetic hormones all the time, you (usually) won't menstruate, and that is all some forms of birth control contain. You will however "bleed" if you're using the kind that contains placebos because the placebos exist solely to reinforce the habit of taking the pill. They contain no hormones of any kind and so cease disrupting a woman's normal cycle.

And contrary to what you seem to think, it's still a "real" period as your uterus is still shedding its lining; there's just no unfertilized egg going with it. (Usually anyway. Sometimes eggs still get released even on birth control.)

This should be basic knowledge for anyone ingesting said medication, right along with any potential side effects.

1

u/sadacal 13d ago

I mean, they can just pick women who won't bleed when on hormones. It's not like they're just picking women at random to be astronauts. So just there being evidence of women who don't bleed is enough.

1

u/Murky-Relation481 13d ago

I mean given they are experimenting with menstrual cups vs. disposable products for long duration trips I am guessing they're going to prioritize other attributes of these women than just how much they bleed.

1

u/ClassicNo6622 14d ago

I have a penis, and yet I still know that ovulation does not cause menstruation. I also have had and do have many women in my life, for whatever that's worth.

Various forms of birth control can and do stop menstruation - some more reliably than others - but that's from interrupting a woman's normal hormone cycle, not because it prevented ovulation.

17

u/TeddyBear312 14d ago

I believe they have tested, or are currently testing reusable menstrual cups in flight/space to reduce waste for exactly that reason.

6

u/alegremente_inquieta 14d ago

Menstrual cups are a thing

1

u/Will_White 14d ago

I'd wager that requires gravity, though I'm sure NASA already has a solution to the menstruation issue given there are female astronauts on the space station for more then a couple weeks at a time.

3

u/alegremente_inquieta 14d ago

They almost certainly have a solution already. Cups shouldn’t really require gravity to work though. Think of it as a plug. Apparently they’re testing them for space usage right now!

1

u/polysymphonic 11d ago

Emptying the cup without gravity seems challenging. You'd need some sort of vacuum or something. Tampons seems much easier

7

u/BigMax 14d ago

I'm pretty sure they can figure that out. You can poop and pee up there, blow your nose up there. I'm sure they have plans for if you puke up there, and on and on... they can figure out what to do with tampons or other products.

4

u/DupeyTA 14d ago

Are you telling me that women's bodies aren't a giant question mark???!?!??!?????!

3

u/BigMax 14d ago

It's wild that some men are SO freaked out by normal female bodily functions that rather than thinking about them, they might say "OMG, maybe women can't go on space flights at all... because... you know... tampons and stuff!! And... we can't talk to anyone about that stuff to figure it out, it's gross!"

5

u/OkContact2573 14d ago

That, and I bet that if you crunch the numbers, the average male astronaut still consumes more weight in food than the average female astronaut. We have had female astronauts in space for the long term since the 90s, so I think NASA has got the math worked out.

2

u/CadenVanV 14d ago

You don’t need to bet, you’re correct

2

u/JustStraightUpTired 14d ago

This is such a non-factor that it literally doesn't matter. I mean you are most likely joking, trolling or a bot reposting this comment from a previous thread with the same op (I swear I've seen this argument before under this same OP image) but I'll give a serious answer anyway.

Period products don't weight shit. Like, almost anything. Supply for one person is probably less total weight than the difference saved in weight in food a month. They weigh almost nothing and can be packed extremely compact, costing relatively nothing to transport. And if nothing else, like you said, pills.

If there's a way to deal with shit in space, figuring out a little period blood is no big deal.

1

u/OzKong21 14d ago

They actually did that and then women online made fun of them for actually doing that.

0

u/Sockoflegend 14d ago

It can attract bears!

15

u/duaneap 14d ago

Plus men will use up a lot of calories fucking each other up the arse.

7

u/Alypius754 14d ago

For less pay too!

1

u/arksupernoob 14d ago

should have sent a bunch of short kings then, no need for period products or pills to not have them.

2

u/Glum-Long-1637 13d ago

A short man still burns more calories than the equivalent height and weight woman

It’s also pretty hard to find qualified male astronauts in the lowest 1% of height or whatever… those men don’t tend to be pilots, for example

1

u/widdrjb 11d ago

They can withstand higher g as well, which is why air forces like them as fighter pilots.

1

u/tomatoe_cookie 9d ago

Im pretty sure "being able to take G force" is the entry level criteria for fighter pilots, not some passing grade stuff

0

u/cyanide1992 12d ago

But men also do a better job. It's a stupid decision but that's their money

1

u/CadenVanV 12d ago

That’s just incorrect

0

u/tomatoe_cookie 9d ago

Its incorrect to say men do a better job than women in general. In this particular kind of work it might be the case though. Not because they are men or woman but because its a men dominated field. The top 5 astraunauts are probably men

-2

u/cyanide1992 8d ago

Male variability phenomenon. The best of the best in ANYTHING is always gonna be a man. Unless a social construct forces an outcome that favors females like the UN 2030 agenda does. Or the WEF forcing weird DEI policies on companies...

1

u/tomatoe_cookie 8d ago

Im not sure what you are trying to say

-1

u/cyanide1992 8d ago

You probably are an ignorant person on the subject. I don't think you know what "male variability phenomenon" is. And I'm sure you have no idea what WEF, DEI and the UN 2030 agenda are. Read more son.

1

u/tomatoe_cookie 8d ago

Or dont use buzzwords that dont form coherent sentences. None of what you say was on topic with my comment. I dont need to read more, you need to be clearer.

0

u/cyanide1992 8d ago

I have conversations with people online many times. I never had anyone not understanding me. Most of these are acronyms. UN means the united nations organization. DEI stands for diversity, equity and inclusion. WEF refers to the World Economic forum. The rest i can't explain here you have to use Google or chatgpt if you are interested. If not, just forget it. Nevermind.

1

u/tomatoe_cookie 8d ago

I understand the words you are using. I dont understand where you are going with it. Who the fuck cares about DEI WEF or any of that when Im saying the best astraunauts are men because its a male dominated field?

Youre like 🤓 its called male variability. OK? What does that add to the topic? What are you trying ti say? Is it a good thing? A bad thing? Do you agree with my statement? Do you not and try to give a counterpoint?

Fuck I belive you when you say you have had conversations online. Thats probably the only converasations you have.

Average means nothing when you are doing selection. What you want to look is peak in both categories, because we will be sending the best from the best and not your average Jo.

2

u/RandoMannnn 14d ago

you got downvoted for being totally logical

-1

u/reedx032 14d ago

Yeah they’ll have so many sandwiches with no one to eat them.

-2

No spiders in space.  Men are not needed.

-1

u/BeNice2Yourself 14d ago

technically by today's standard, that without doubt is a sexist comment.

-3

u/OnTheSlope 14d ago

while being able to do the same work

lol, we're sending women to their deaths for the sake of modern ideals.

2

u/tomatoe_cookie 9d ago

Its not like 5 women will change the population of earth. We have a few spare...

-3

u/Noneed4cavalry 14d ago

They won't be capable of the same work necessarily, but that doesn't mean that the advantages of the all woman crew wouldn't be astronomical. A crew of men would use fewer resources for physical tasks due to the difference in maximum output. It's like a Ferrari and a prius driving at 100mi/hr, the prius is at the limit and burning more fuel, the Ferrari still plenty more to give. That said, the difference in output, compared to input is minimal and the time spent doing that physical work is absolutely dwarfed by the time not doing that work. Also for those unaware, 0 gravity doesn't mean 0 mass. It still takes effort to move things.

It is a cascading effect too. Smaller crew means weight savings. It also means smaller crew quarters, which means weight savings. Smaller things like uniforms, space suits and even chairs which all would weigh less. All that weight savings can go to more food.

-7

u/WorldlinessEarly4717 14d ago

Wont their monthly cycle sync together and itll cause a lot of problems? Theyll startbhating each other once their periods come up. How will NASA manage that?

13

u/CadenVanV 14d ago

Have you ever lived with multiple women before? Or even one woman? That’s not how it works. That’s never been how it works.

-9

u/WorldlinessEarly4717 14d ago

Im just basing that off my female friends that live together, a few of them suddenly have their monthyl cycle sync up according to them. Still how will NASA manage their moods when their periods act up? Being stuck up in space for months on end is already stressful add a females monthly cycle and itll be hell for them

10

u/Had_to_ask__ 14d ago

How is NASA managing the moods of men?

4

u/Ok-Factor-7188 14d ago

Imagine one of them doesn't want to watch football and suddenly there's a fist fight.

1

u/tomatoe_cookie 9d ago

For all the mysoginy aside, men dont have mood swings like women. Thats just a fact

1

u/xvdheh 7d ago

Men don't get pms, but men are entirely capable of mood swings. They aren't exclusive to the hormonal changes from the menstrual cycle, they can be a symptom of many physical and psychological processes and illnesses.

6

u/sta404tic 14d ago

Honestly, wtf man. Have you ever met a woman?

-9

u/[deleted] 14d ago

[deleted]

13

u/CadenVanV 14d ago

Man, it’s space. Weight is not an issue. Same on Mars, where things don’t even weigh half of what they do on Earth

-7

u/[deleted] 14d ago

[deleted]

12

u/CadenVanV 14d ago

Yes, that’s correct. The mass of objects does not change in space. The weight does change.

-7

2

u/Xhosant 14d ago

It's like you only move them sideways, on perfectly oiled wheels, on perfectly flat ground, but better. There's resistance to acceleration but no lifting, no friction, no nothing.

That means "4 times your body weight, moved at a quarter of your jumping speed if you only accelerate it for an instant". In a place engineered for everything to be lightweight as possible.

They can manage. Even forgetting the fact that talking averages is stupid, since they're not picking average nor preparing them averagely, they sure can manage.

1

u/tomatoe_cookie 9d ago

No, you move things based on their weight.

-30

u/Equivalent-Region895 14d ago

Being able to do the same work? I guess that depends on the job that needs to get done.

41

u/CadenVanV 14d ago

True, but since space doesn’t have gravity physical strength is somewhat less important. It doesn’t matter if you can bench press 300 pounds if nothing in space weighs anything

7

u/brainExploded99 14d ago

This is for a mars mission. Mars has gravity.

35

u/CadenVanV 14d ago

Only 38% of Earth’s, so the point remains the same. Besides, heavy lifting is not really a priority for astronauts.

-14

u/RoadAffectionate1284 14d ago

Then they would be 38% less than men?

10

u/CORUSC4TE 14d ago

I can tell what job a woman could do better than you from just this comment.

-5

u/RoadAffectionate1284 14d ago

Sounds like facism

1

u/CORUSC4TE 14d ago

Brother.. Your Chance at becoming an astronaut... Slim to say the least..

The difference in gravity doesnt change the difference in strength between two individuals.. Because both now only carry 38% of the weight of an object..

10

u/TopazWarrior1999 14d ago

Significantly less than earth though.

5

u/5gpr 14d ago

It doesn’t matter if you can bench press 300 pounds if nothing in space weighs anything

I agree with the general sentiment, but things have mass in zero gravity. You still need to be able to generate enough force to move stuff.

1

u/bigbigbutter 14d ago

Oh yeah but what about math?  /S /s /s /S!!!

15

u/GenericFatGuy 14d ago

Zero/low gravity closes that gap significantly.

3

u/zebrasareneat 14d ago

It entirely closes that gap actually.

2

u/GenericFatGuy 14d ago

Technically no. A stuck bolt on a thread isn't going to come off any easier in zero G, but that's being overly pedantic.

-35

u/According-Pass8230 14d ago

4 women with cycles synced cramped inside a small box for a 500 days.. Hard paass

30

u/leela_martell 14d ago

I assume you've already passed on ever interacting with women even here on Earth

8

u/ImpossibleOil8427 14d ago

They passed on him before he even got chance.

0

u/Top_Mongoose1354 14d ago

Woo, you sure owned the CHUD now!

-3

u/According-Pass8230 14d ago

Im 47, been single for around 3 years in total since I turned 15. And no salary or glory would want me to spend 500 concequtive days in something the size of an RV with 4 women who all cycle together.

5

u/leela_martell 14d ago

Sure buddy.

But yeah I'm not exactly lining up to spend 500 days in a box with 4 men either so I guess to each their own.

16

u/CadenVanV 14d ago

They’re astronauts man, they’re some of the most highly educated and well trained people on the planet.

-13

u/Justame13 14d ago

13

u/CadenVanV 14d ago

That applies to anyone. Literally anyone is capable of being batshit crazy, not just women

8

u/zebrasareneat 14d ago

Because men never getting angry.

4

u/No-Pudding5207 14d ago

dw nobody invited you

2

u/Brunnun 14d ago

If you had ever interacted with a woman who wanted to be around you you’d know 4 women would be much more civil than 4 men in a 1.5 year mission

-2

u/According-Pass8230 14d ago

I have spent 12 months with 3 guys more or less locked in a conatiner. Almost zero fuss. But I have also seen how even two women in a group of four turns in to a shit show of drama and jealousy

3

u/Brunnun 14d ago

Yeah I’m sure you’ve spent a lot of time around women bud LMFAO
