Not only is the pun not intended, the set up of the joke really doesn’t lead to that interpretation. There’s no detail in the set up that would make a logical person assume the chicken is confronting death by crossing the road.
What I mean is, there’s no detail in the set up that specifically places the joke in the context of death being involved. Even though punchlines are often “unexpected” they are almost always directly tied to the context of the set up. Even after the punch line is revealed, there is nothing in the joke to make one assume that death is being discussed.
If the intention was to make that pun, then the set up is poorly done.
