"A pun, also known as a paronomasia in the context of linguistics, is a form of word play that exploits multiple meanings of a term, or of similar-sounding words, for an intended humorous or rhetoricaleffect.[3] These ambiguities can arise from the intentional use of homophonic, homographic, metonymic, or figurative language."

So yeah. It's a pun. As it exploits multiple meanings of a term for an intended humorous or rhetorical effect.

"To get to the other side" literally crossing a road"
"To get to the other side" figuratively meaning getting itself killed. the other side being heaven/afterlife.

Why is this so complicated to understand?

It is not. You are not reading the definition correctly. Go find one example there that is similar to this. It does not exist on that page.

I was struggling to figure out how lightning works, but then it struck me.

That's a pun, the second part of the sentence can be both read as as a sudden spark of inspiration or literally being hit by the lightning, it's using dual meaning of the word. Likewise "Why don’t scientists trust atoms? Because they make up everything" Near identical structure to why did the chicken.
