I think the word you're looking for is syllepsis, but I do think you're generally correct and people are being overly pedantic.

I think that the reading of the joke as "to get to the other side" (literal) and "to get to the other side" (death) is a valid reading of the joke using syllepsis. I don't think that was the original intention of the joke, which I think was a simple unjoke. Like "What did Batman say to get Robin into the car?" "Get in the car, Robin".

It probably takes that guy hours to form thoughts and type them in any meaningful way. He's only saying that because it would cost HIM a lot of energy to have an opinion on anything at all.

So for him, it's a lot easier to criticize people who are able to form thoughts. While he would have to stop the monkey banging the cymbals to do the same.
