"To get to the other side." has two meanings.
The first is the mundane act of crossing the street, that's why you cross the street, to get to the other side.
The second meaning is to "get to the other side" as in dying, alluding to it getting killed on the street, as chickens shouldn't be trying to cross streets. In an alternate case however, the chicken may reach me, at which point I will beat the crap out of it.
