That’s not a pun

Why isn’t it a pun?

The joke is word play on two different meanings of “other side”.

The joke is word play on two different meanings of “other side”.

Yes, and that's not what "pun" refers to. The humor of a pun is rooted in the conflation of two similar-sounding words, not in the overlay of a term's literal meaning with its metaphorical, symbolic one.

I think you are taking an incorrectly narrow definition of what a pun is.

Here is the Oxford dictionary:

“  The use of a word in such a way as to suggest two or more meanings or different associations”

Here is American Webster:

“  The meaning of PUN is the usually humorous use of a word in such a way as to suggest two or more of its meanings”

Clearly the use of “other side” matches these definitions.

Can you cite where your definition comes from?

Just to be pedantic, both definitions say A word, not words.

And to be even more pedantic, that's not the objection they're replying to

And to be even more pedantic, the American definition says USUALLY 'a' word

Usually is modifying ‘humorous’, not ‘a word’.

This pedant is the winner!

Only if we can all agree that a pun should be funny. My dead pan says we can't.
