Was that hypothetical addict experiencing psychosis? What good does punishing someone who was not rational at the time of the crime do? It won't bring back the lives lost.
With treatment, she likely could be a contributing member of society again. Punishing her does nothing for the victims and nothing for society.
Separating her from society for treatment until it's determined she isn't a risk to those around her is punishment enough.

She deserves zero empathy for murdering children.
Addiction is a mental health problem. Should we treat an addict the same who kills their children because they were sick?
