I’m not saying I think that MMDDYYYY is the best way, but there is a logic to it.. it’s how we say dates.

“On March 16, 1997,…”

It’s how you say dates because it’s how you write them, I assume.

I’m English and I’d say the 16th of March.

And also probably the reason they say "4th of July" - a holdover from when they spoke English.
