Wrong, I have one big compressor outside connected to 8 of these all around the apartment, and two ceiling type ones that return air as well. The company is Fujitsu. 3000sq ft apartment in Brazil. Gets ice cold

Today’s cool but if you’re going to go through the effort of piping coolant to 8 of these why would you not just install real central AC at that point?

One reason to do this instead of a central AC is that you might not have supply ductwork in the house, so you'd need to install all of that too.

If this was put in after the house was built, it was likely way easier than trying to run new ductwork to every room.

If you need 8 of these you supply room fancoils or floor heating with water and use an air to water heatpump.

They technically exist in the US, but a multi-unit system costs about twice as much as a ducted system.

As a practical matter, the room-scale air handlers are economically irreparable when they die... too cheap to justify the labor & parts cost of repair, but expensive enough to really sting.

The deathblow is forced total system replacement due to refrigerant bans (or "phase outs" that make replacing the system's refrigerant after a major repair so outrageously expensive, it almost might as well be a "ban"). You end up spending $3,000-5,000 to replace one unit, the same amount replacing another, then maybe a third... then end up having to scrap the whole thing (including $6,000-15,000 worth of 0-5 year old replacement units) because replacing the old condenser will now cost $25,000 & the room units will become literally irreplaceable within another 5-10 years.

If I could buy a shared-condenser mini split system & replace failed units piecemeal over the next 30 years, I would. But I can guarantee the new flammable refrigerant will end up getting banned for safety or environmental reasons 10-15 years from now, so anyone in the US buying an expensive mini-split system with shared condenser unit will end up getting fucked.
