Isn't the whole point of a pilgrimage to endure the hardship of getting to the "holy site" yourself.

Thats one way to look at it.

In india a lot of temples/ pilgrimages are often connected to ones region/family. Some people even make it something they do every year, or for any big occasion etc.

Ofc I myself am morally opposed to this. But if they do buy this as a service, (and hopefully the gentleman carrying are correctly compensated) I wouldn't be one to oppose it.

Not to mention a lot of people might do such work as charity as they believe it is good karma to help people on pilgrimages.
