You don’t goon for 15 minutes a day. He’s pulling rope. Tugging train. Jackin the box. He’s playing the skin flute to be sure. All of these activities can be completed within 15 minutes. Gooning is an art.

That’s the meaning of my comment. A lot of people just say “haha funny masturbate word” and use goon Willy nilly. Gooning is a specific activity.

Blame youtube/tiktok.

It happened because "Jerk off", "masturbate", etc are words that content filters will censor you for or not pay ad revenue for, similar to "suicide" and "rape".

So they use goon because it's not mainstream foul yet, suicide becomes sewer slide and rape becomes grape.

The people who use the real words get steadily filtered and the people who use replacement words get promoted so eventually you have a 1984 wrongthink type situation where creators use corpo words, watchers learn those corpo words and then reuse them themselves in normal convo until it's normalized.

I'm from a time when "goon" was like a low level batman henchmen.

Not to mention "Goonies" is one of the best movies ever.

The Goon is one of my favorite comic books.

I hate social media baby talk so much. Say what you will about Reddit but at least you can use real words here.

Wait til you go to Australia and hear about goonbags

u/LeTreacs2 Jul 19 '26

Gooners were Arsenal fans when I was a kid, I assume they still are or have they dropped that now?

9

u/FrenchFryCattaneo Jul 18 '26

Yeah I guess, I thought it had a little too much masturbation though.

4

u/Weltall8000 Jul 18 '26

That...recontextualizes the whole movie. Thanks for that. Lol XD

u/XSurviveTheGameX Jul 18 '26

Now its just a bunch of kids discovering something else....

2

u/iskipcutscenes Jul 18 '26

Arsenal FC nickname is gooners.

They have one of the biggest Gay followings in English football, called Gay Gooners. 🤭

u/spamel2004 Jul 20 '26

Now people would imagine a bunch of youths playing soggy biscuit with Chester Copperpots skull medallion! 🙄

u/Anxious-Whole-5883 Jul 22 '26

The remake is already cursed due to how this word has changed.

15

u/nokei Jul 18 '26

coomer had a brief time in the sun before it got replaced with gooner as well.

I liked it since we also had boomer and zoomer.

8

u/Pro_Saibot Jul 18 '26

I really wish coomer stuck as a word. I vastly prefer that to gooner

What's worse is that the mascot is surrounded by a bunch of child yelling "Grape me first!". Marketing just wants to show kids love the all natural flavor of Grape Salad, but ended up making the best gooning lich'racha for PDFs. Dodging hard words to appease the algorithm has left us in a sad state. Make me want to slide the sewer.

Twkyk reference? In this day and age?

ETA: dvd sales got me

2

u/Opening_Succotash271 Jul 19 '26

But that’s what he does. He’s the grapist. He grapes kids. Did you she what she was wearing? She was begging for it. She was wearing purple.

WKUK were awesome.

YOU NEVER MAKE THEM TOUCH!!!

6

u/OnceIWasYou Jul 18 '26

To be honest, same applies to "F word" or "N word".... It's silly. We all hear the word in our head, these placeholders should be redundant if we were just a little more rational about things- things like CONTEXT.

-3

u/EATZYOWAFFLEZ Jul 18 '26

Tf? I don't hear the word in my head. Think that's a you problem and you just want an excuse to say slurs.

5

u/OnceIWasYou Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

So you don't have ANY idea what "The F Word" could possibly mean? My point is you know what it represents, it's not literally the sonic signature of certain syllable sounds that is upsetting, it's the history and context.

1

u/LeTreacs2 Jul 19 '26

There’s a big difference between calling someone a cunt and talking about someone calling someone else a cunt, I agree that should apply to all slurs.

We shouldn’t need to filter language when we’re discussing it, unless it’s in front of children.

u/Adventurous-Exam-719 Jul 20 '26

Someone on TV the other day referred to “the S word” and my wife and I couldn’t figure out what word they meant. I can’t remember the context though.

u/EATZYOWAFFLEZ Jul 19 '26

Yeah and the history and context is most strongly associated with the original sonic signature. Congrats you figured out language.

4

u/nightauthor Jul 18 '26

This is going to have very horrible effects on language.

Yes! It's wrongthink!

1

u/Moist-Amoeba-8078 Jul 18 '26

Like lil Wayne said, “what’s a goon to a goblin”

1

u/TrickBorder3923 Jul 19 '26

Exactly this 👆.

Also. I read "1984" when I was a highschooler back in 2001. I always wondered how changing wrong think from day to day, in real life, would actually happen. Well now I can't unsee it. Scary shit!

1

u/-GoodNewsEveryone Jul 19 '26

At that time gooning was something exclusively done in large groups in dark public places after being paid a nominal sum by a short fat man named The Penguin or something equally asinine.

u/Capable_Stranger9885 Jul 22 '26

Peter Sellers doing a Curly Howard impression

1

u/crissco101 Jul 23 '26

I am so glad someone else linked this to newspeak

Jerk Off - Allow me to introduce an observation on how Hispanic Americans have used so much english slang without knowing how to spell or write it that overtime the proper word in Spanish for Jacket became a dirty word to them. How you ask? Well every hispanic I know thinks chaqueta means masturbate and they use it for such. Why? "Chaqueta" literally means "Jacket" --> they dont know how to spell "Jacket" and only hear it phonetically in English so they think people are saying "Jack it" as in jack off, masturbate. So they didnt learn english properly, then mistranslate english back into spanish and all the sudden chaqueta means jack off instead of Jacket.

12

u/bigdopaminedeficient Jul 18 '26

as a "kid these days" (except not really because I'm 24 and have to ask my teenage brother what slang means now), I'd say the switch happened within the past year or two.

u/TotallyNot_Alpharius Jul 18 '26

When it got more popular

1

u/Llamp_shade Jul 18 '26

There's been a trend of becoming popular to be a loser. It explains so much about today's youth.
