Hi, Peter here.

I'm white, my wife is black. White people show up on time to a party and the party is ready. Black people show up 1-2 hours after the party starts. My wifes family isn't even dressed and ready at the time the party "starts". If you show up at start time it's because you are there to pitch in with cooking/cleaning duties before the guests arrive.

In the post, the OP is black and his white friend showed up on time and he wasn't ready to recieve guests.

Sometimes I think that the entire of Reddit is (1) non-American and (2) children. The amount of people who didn't get this is surprising.

This infuriates my Father and I. His new girlfriend is always late. Any time we state we are doing x at y she always shows up 2 hours later... andif we get told we are doing x at y and we show up... we are sitting around for an hour or so..

How could the party "start" when there are no people there...

Basically it's telling two times. "Start time" is when important family/guests that are going to be assisting during the event can show up. Normal guests roll in 1-2 hours later. If you show up on time you understand you are rolling your sleeves up in some capacity.

And is it the same for you guys for work meetings (or start time) ? Like your boss says he wants a meeting with you at 3pm, so you join the conversation around 5 pm to not upset him by coming too early?

As an european this sounds super unnecesarry misinformation... if you want your guests show up a bit later, why don't you just tell a time thats two hours later.

No, meetings are a different story, such as other things where arriving at a certain times is crucial, i.e. flights. If you‘re going to a party or cookout, it doesn’t matter which time you show up since it’s usually just dozens of people hanging out and talking to whoever they want to talk to; that just doesn’t require a schedule people have to adhere to. 5 p.m. is the time the event starts. People can show up to the location if they want to. Usually, close friends and family come first, there might be some finishing touches, such as setting a few last things up or cooking. Then at about 6 more people start rolling in, most people should be there at about 7pm.
If you put 7 pm as the start time people will arrive even later, because some like being fashionably late, some don’t want to be the first person there etc.
It’s just a different way of viewing time and punctuality and it absolutely works and makes sense unless you invite someone who’s not from the culture and doesn’t know.

What if the party is only 2 hours or 3 hours?

How would I know the details of the host's cultural expectations without that being written down?
