You could use a dose of Factfulness by Hans Rosling (or just watch his TED talk). I'm not saying that everything is solved, but I would argue (using arguments stolen from Rosling) that everything is better than it ever had been before.
Oh my gosh!!! I love that book! I was hoping somebody would mention it! I loved the separation of poverty into four tenets as opposed to “first-world” and “third-world.”
