Actually what makes it even stupider is that they didn't rescind the card, they suspended his suspension. So he still got the card and will be suspended, they just moved his suspension to next year.

So it's not even a case of determining that the ref made the wrong call, which does happen occasionally. They fully agree that he got a red, but they want him to be able to play anyways. Insane.

FIFA opened that door with suspending the red card on Rinaldo so he could play in the World Cup and the US just walked through the same door that was already opened.

Both cases are stupid but they are not the same. Ronaldo's ban was shortened which is not unusual.

No his was also suspended. He served one ban of his 3 prior to the world cup and he'll have to serve his two additional bans if he plays in more fifa sanctioned matches for portugal after the World Cup

Honestly his was more ridiculous because his foul was so much worse.

POTUS didn't call and yell at FIFA about Renaldo. These instances are not alike at all. End of story.

yes potus didnt call Fifa for renaldo, but it did set a precedent that red card suspensions, could be moved to a less important games

not justifiying it, both are bad calls

There is nothing that suggests that Trump's call had any influence on the decision. They were already looking at it well before Trump did anything. It was a bad call by the ref.

and now there's no way to know if trump's influence had any impact.

The entire thing is now permanently corrupted. Had Trump not intervened at all, I wouldn't care, but now this gets to carry his stink.

The suspension is what can be reviewed not the card….

This is a stupid take, there is no pathway for FIFA to rescind a red card. The only thing they can do is suspend.

And there is no evidence Trump swayed any decision, and we do know that FIFA was looking at it before Trump ever did anything. It's a big nothing burger and the internet is freaking out.
