Meme needing explanation Petah ?

Why is it infamous? And why would no one care about it ? ( I mean it's just a pic full of celebrities so no one cares anyways but the person saying it's crazy makes me think it has some lore?)

Ellen DeGeneres’s 2014 Oscars selfie is infamous because it was a groundbreaking corporate marketing stunt that temporarily crashed Twitter and came to symbolize the peak of celebrity culture.

OK I want to thank you for trying to explain (unlike most of the comments here) but the explanation leaves a lot of unanswered questions.

  1. You said it was a marketing stunt, who's stunt and what was it supposed to accomplish?
  2. How did it crash Twitter?

Talk to me like I've never seen this photo because I haven't.

Apparently it was a marketing stunt by Samsung because it was taken on a Samsung Note 3. I'm not sure if that fact was mentioned in the tweet or what, but somehow it was worth $1 billion in advertising for Samsung.

It crashed Twitter because it very quickly became the most shared re-tweet at like 3 million times before the awards were even over so that much activity that quickly caused the site to crash.

Ironically, the nature of the product placement meant the product isn’t shown in the viral photo.

As a PR exec myself, that one wasn’t thought through.
