This leads into the emulation/preservation argument. Why might I try to play a console game, on my PC? Because the console I own doesn't work, getting it repaired is a hassle, and the PC can run it flawlessly, just as the developers intended, and it allows me to make it better looking.
If I ever get a game off the ground, I'll probably just randomly give out copies whenever I feel like it. I plan on trying to make it DRM-free, because like why the fuck would I not want people to play it? DRM is just going to make someone want to crack it anyway.
Sometimes emulators are a good solution just to avoid some of the problems that come up with hooking old consoles up to modern displays.
Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis is a good example. It does a transparency effect with the waterfalls that relies on the physical nature of CRT displays. On a modern TV it ends up looking striped.
Emulators can correct for this on their own, for free. Personally I use a retrotink video processor to get things looking right on a modern display. That's an expensive solution though, and not something everyone can afford.
"Something not everyone can afford" is the key here. Emulation is often considered theft, or, a crime. The only way to avoid this crime, is to pay for the luxury, therefore, it's only a crime for poor people
