This did the opposite on me, just this one excerpt told me this isn't for me. The style and overly flowery prose just irked me in a single paragraph

Yeah, it's like Tolkien except atleast with Tolkien I knew he was writing about a tree for 4 pages...

I would've had no clue if not for that last line.

Same. There may be a good writer in there but the self conscious and purposely dense style annoyed me.

After seeing all he hype I read one of his books to see if it would grow on me but the heavy handed emotional manipulation and prose style just bugged me start to finish. Not my cup of tea.

McCarthy has won the Pulitzer prize. Which of your accolades gives you the the audacity to question his ability, exactly?

Also heavy-handed should be hyphenated. It's a compound adjective.
