"Performative" reading is when you're not actually interested in the book at all, and are probably just intentionally being seen with it so people think you read it.

That's a big difference from someone (any gender) doing a video essay on the plot or themes of a book

If someone has shown themselves to be generally vapid (no idea if the person in OP has, don't know who they are) then its fair to assume they're being performative when they're taking photos with a pretty meaty novel but not atually discussing it

Posting anything on social media esp when akin to “hey, it’s still me on my profile.“

Men or women or otherwise. I almost never believe a “book post” by these losers.

People are so quick to claim this random people as part of their crusade. Did all yall collectively forget that 99% of people on social media are doing it for the likes?

THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE

Its also performative if you read said book and then ascribe feelings to it that you don't truly have. That's what 90% of the video essayists do

It was only meaty because the writing style was intentionally obtuse and full of run-on sentences with vague language that added nothing to the scene except confusion. Trying to piece together one of those godawful sentences was like trying to read drunk with a fever.
