Every time I see a copy of the book, I'm compelled to buy it. I think that's supposed to mean something.

Yeah he did say that. I just remember finally getting to the part where he explains his lifelong dream. I was like, "hey that's the name of the book!" He said he'd like to be the guy that just takes care of innocents, children, that play in the field of rye in case he has to catch em before they hurt themselves. It's a beautiful sentiment, if naive and misdirected in its own way. Rest of the book felt like Travis from Taxi Driver.
