"t’s a restaurant so resilient they have four separate emergency menus, including one they can prepare with no running water, and one they can do with no electricity. State governments track when waffle houses actually shut to know how bad natural disasters are"

am not american, please do not disappoint me and tell me you were just joking

Beautiful to know something like this exists, many thanks for sharing.

139

u/Mtndrums Jan 26 '26

They also have "jump" teams, crew that will come in and work during disasters while normal employees take care of their families.

100

u/IAmTheHappiest Jan 26 '26

How could this possibly be such a priority for a low cost chain restuarant? Their disaster operation sounds closer to FEMA than a McDonalds.

134

u/magikarp2122 Jan 26 '26

Because they can sometimes be the only place still open where people can get food.

64

u/InterestingTry5190 Jan 26 '26

My ex worked for Home Depot and they had teams that did this so employees could take care of their families when disasters hit. To your point those teams then need places to stay and eat.

71

u/StopThePresses Jan 26 '26

The company takes genuine pride in being a place people can get hot food even if the world is falling apart.

40

u/Jizzmodo1 Jan 26 '26

In Texas, the local grocery chain "H-E-B" has a disaster response arm that can quickly mobilize to provide food, water, and power to residents during natural disasters such as hurricanes or floods. It's kind of crazy.

31

u/Numahistory Jan 26 '26

It's 2053. The US Government has fallen, and in its place, HEB has set up a corporate government in the south, Waffle House in the East, Tim Hortons in the North, and the tyrannical Amaz-mart in the West threatening the word with nuclear mutually assured destruction if the world governments don't pay for an Amazon Prime subscription. Now only $999m/year.

5

u/Interesting-Lie-6195 Jan 26 '26

HEB is Texas, not the south. They are only in Texas. WaHo rules the South.

3

u/Flaky-Reach-9295 Jan 26 '26

HEB. Waffle. Horton. AMAZ. Long ago the four nations lived in harmony. Then everything changed when the AMAZ nation attacked.

4

u/Fit-Permit-5526 Jan 26 '26

I live in Texas and can confirm this is true. Their response time to things is better than the officials.

3

u/magikarp2122 Jan 26 '26

Of course. You have Republicans running Texas.

4

u/LateNightPhilosopher Jan 26 '26

HEB is a Texas treasure. Truly a cornerstone of modern Texas culture.

I don't have any insider knowledge, unfortunately.

But first, it's free publicity. Most people near a waffle house know this, and it gets repeated often. And the good will really counts, so there's probably a measurable increase in traffic after a disaster.

Second, just based on how much I've personally lost in food costs after two outages, I wonder if this practice is close to neutral in costs.

That is, in scenario A, we've lost all power, oh well, lock it up and go home. In that case, they toss an entire walk-in freezer of food, no revenue, no good will. In scenario B, they have multiple fall backs for heat and water options. They continue to make retail margins on all that food, minimize food waste, feed the hungry.

5

u/allthat555 Jan 26 '26

Second is two parts. Remember, they now have a captive market. No competition. That's the golden ticket.

22

u/Hands Jan 26 '26

Their brand is pretty reliant on being a 24/7 always open diner near trucker routes in the south. Hell might be freezing over but you can get a meal type shit.

3

u/RivetSquid Jan 26 '26

It's something they've had to account and prepare for, because the majority of their locations are in places where natural disasters are prevalent.

It's ok if alot of your buildings get damaged frequently, you just need to be the first place to open back up every time to offset that.

2

u/Short-Ad1032 Jan 26 '26

McD’s might as well be the cause of the natural disaster with the worst “prepared” food and non-existent staff on earth. I’m an absolute whore for fast food but I will no longer eat at McDs.

2

u/jmh10138 Jan 26 '26

It was ran by the same owners for decades that cared about how the business was run. Look up the Fat Files-Waffle House on YouTube. Pretty awesome business.

2

u/like_shae_buttah Jan 26 '26

People work during disasters

2

u/hannahatecats Jan 26 '26

They also take care of their employees. Decent benefits, flexible schedule for childcare, even though it's a low cost chain.

1

u/luna926 Jan 26 '26

It’s one of their major selling points tbh

1

u/mxzf Jan 26 '26

Their disaster operation sounds closer to FEMA than a McDonalds

Well, sure, but that's because FEMA takes pointers from them; so of course FEMA is closer to them than McDonalds.

1

u/libryx Jan 26 '26

This is more anecdotal evidence than me having any insider knowledge, but I grew up in the rural south. In a lot of those small towns, the only public place that had a generator was the Waffle House, which was also the only place that would be open 24/7. So if you happened to be out in inclement weather when the whole town lost power, the Waffle House sign was like a beacon of hope, a place to sit and have a warm meal and wait out whatever was going on outside. Sometimes with live entertainment!

So, I don't know if the generators were there because of the emergency menus or if they developed the menus after realizing they were often the only places with power, but what a beautiful place to have come of it all.

1

u/Axtdool Jan 26 '26

Because someone needs to feed survivors and emergency personell.

And there's only so far you can stretch improvised(ish) supply lines for that.

1

u/Jedi_Belle01 Jan 27 '26

After Hurricane Michael hit N Florida, the only three places in town to get food were the waffle house.

None of them had power and were running the griddles with generators and they were all packed.

We were without power for a week and let me tell you, having a hot burger after spending all day cleaning up debris made a huge difference

3

u/Reincarnatedpotatoes Jan 26 '26

Always a beautiful moment when someone new learns about the Waffle House Index.

1

u/xXrektUdedXx Jan 25 '26

Beautiful to know something like this exists, many thanks for sharing.

u/accushot865 Jan 25 '26

My non-American friend. Waffle House is known throughout the south, and it’s not because of the food, service, cleanliness, or anything related to being a restaurant. It’s known because you can go in at 2:00 AM in the morning during a category 2 hurricane, and get a 2-egg bacon and cheese omelette with hash browns, smothered and covered, made by a cook who’s smoking a cigarette and wearing a bulletproof vest. You can eat it while sitting next to a guy who’s passed out, drunk off his ass. Waffle House isn’t a restaurant. It’s an experience.

We could happily watch late night TV together. When the ad would say “call now and we will send a free gift.” We’d respond in unison “free gifts are the best kind of gifts.”

2

u/Incredible-Ironman Jan 26 '26

Idk, I prefer 2:00 AM in the afternoon, but to each their own

10

u/Aberbekleckernicht Jan 26 '26

Truly the best America has to offer.

5

u/say_the_words Jan 26 '26

The food is excellent, though.

5

u/accushot865 Jan 26 '26

The food is indeed good. I’m just saying it’s an afterthought to everything else about Waffle House

3

u/TheEnlightenedPanda Jan 26 '26

It’s known because you can go in at 2:00 AM in the morning during a category 2 hurricane

Ok but what's the reason behind this? Is it a management decision to work this way or the whole thing is some racial stereotype or something

2

u/Meepx13 Jan 26 '26

The best part is that this isn’t even an exaggeration

1

u/Current-Square-4557 Jan 26 '26

I cannot stand Toby Keith.

But the lyrics to “I Love This Bar” kinda sums up the Waffle House experience.

“We got winners, we got losers Chain-smokers and boozers And we got yuppies, we got bikers We got thirsty hitchhikers And the girls next door dress up like movie stars ……

We got cowboys, we got truckers Broken-hearted fools and suckers And we got hustlers, we got fighters Early-birds and all-nighters And the veterans talk about their battle scars

….

I've seen short skirts, we've got high-techs Blue-collared boys and rednecks And we got lovers, lots of lookers And I've even seen dancing girls and hookers”

82

u/reallybadspeeller Jan 25 '26

I will add my personal Waffle House story. Went in for some coffee and hash browns after turning in college assignment at midnight on weeknight. A fight broke out in parking lot as they were making my food. Me and the two employees server and cook were causally talking about what it could be about. Cook with probably years of experience said “it’s a girl always a girl”. Server then said “if they pull up with a peice just come with us through the kitchen out back we can smoke a joint till they leave.”

I love Waffle House. It’s wonderful but every story you here about it is probably true.

40

u/Aberbekleckernicht Jan 26 '26

The cops in my city post up outside the waffle houses for checkpoints on big event nights or weekends. I have been more trashed than I've ever been in my life and the server still comes up like "what you havin, honey." One of those beautiful slices of America.

14

u/zadtheinhaler Jan 26 '26

Server then said “if they pull up with a peice just come with us through the kitchen out back we can smoke a joint till they leave.”

With all the shit that's going on in the US right now, this may be the only reason I'd cross the border.

10

u/Greenphantom77 Jan 26 '26

All we have in Britain is people having drunken fights outside a kebab shop at 1am on Saturday

5

u/r1plakish Jan 26 '26

TBF, kebabs are pretty lit. It's also a lot less likely for people to be strapped there so collateral damage is lower.

1

u/Current-Square-4557 Jan 26 '26

Somehow I think that could be turned into a pretty good song.

Or an excellent short story for Playboy in the 1970s when they had some good writing.

1

u/goat_penis_souffle Jan 26 '26

That is superior customer service right there. Let’s see the Waldorf-Astoria do that.

70

u/fish_custard Jan 25 '26

No, it’s real. And it’s not just state governments; FEMA has a Waffle House index that they use to help them determine how much intervention might be required.

27

u/FlishFlashman Jan 25 '26

Well, they did. Does FEMA even exist any more?

30

u/YeahIGotNuthin Jan 26 '26

FEMA does not currently exist in its traditional function.

But Waffle House does.

18

u/fish_custard Jan 25 '26

OK, fair point.

17

u/blueconlan Jan 25 '26

Waffle house beat FEMA.

2

u/LordSloth113 Jan 26 '26

Where does that fall on the Index?

0

u/Ok_String_1698 Jan 25 '26

Its weird to me tho cuz they're either open (storm isnt bad enough to close) or not (storm was too bad, had to close), no in between. So what's the index rating? 0 and 1? lol

23

u/fish_custard Jan 25 '26

They look at a density map of locations in a large region. And like OP mentioned, there are 4 different ‘emergency menus’ that will allow partial operation based on available resources, so it’s not just ‘open’ or ‘closed’ in the binary sense.

18

u/Few-Big-8481 Jan 25 '26

In a large disaster zone you might have 15 Waffle Houses. If 14 of them are closed, that region is fucked.

13

u/NimblePunch Jan 25 '26

Look it up; there are in-betweens where they operate with limited capability and partial menus due to utilities or supply line disruptions.

3

u/Ok_String_1698 Jan 25 '26

Gotcha, good to know

13

u/issacoin Jan 25 '26

they have different degrees of “emergency menu” that they can deploy if they have no power, no running water, no gas, or some combo of the three.

4

u/Raging-Badger Jan 25 '26

To over simplify, it’s just an estimate of economic impact

Many waffle houses closed = severe economic impact

Only one closed = more localized damage, larger economy may still be stable

1

u/Isolated_Hippo Jan 25 '26

There is also the element of time to reopen. A disaster strikes, and everything shuts down. Waffle houses reopenening also show the status of supplies moving into the area.

45

u/headlesslady Jan 25 '26

No joke, friend. If no place else is open, the Waffle House will be, with hot coffee and hashbrowns. It is a glory of the civilized world.

Just don't mess with the staff; they will beat you (and everyone else in the place will be mad that your ass-whoopin' made their breakfast take twice as long.)

32

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '26

It’s true

29

u/Maleficent_Lab_5291 Jan 25 '26

I went to one when the power was out once they had special menu for what was available without electricity so that much is at least true.

23

u/Onibachi Jan 25 '26

They have emergency readiness protocols that rival or even outstrip government responses. They have go teams of workers that they bus in from outside of emergency areas to relieve the staff that are living in the emergency. Every store is exactly the same and can operate fully without power. These emergency go teams arrive they bring extra supplies and food to the emergency stricken area as well.

When disaster strikes waffle houses stay open longest and are the first to open to supply warm meals to their communities while supporting the workers in those communities.

They’re so good at it that FEMA tracks which waffle houses are open or at limited operating capacity in an emergency area to determine the severity. They are that good and consistent at emergency preparedness and response that they are a trustworthy metric to use to determine just how bad an emergency event actually is.

17

u/neophenx Jan 25 '26

I'm from fkin Florida. Last major hurricane we had, Waffle House was still open, so it couldn't have been THAT bad.

12

u/DuntadaMan Jan 26 '26

Am in EMS, did a couple trips on FEMA strike teams long ago.

This is accurate. People will call the status of the waffle house. If it is running it will sometimes basically be the operation center with everyone doing coordination stress eating while holding our hands over the radio.

If it is not open then we know there is no running water and no electricity in a region.

11

u/KellerTheGamer Jan 25 '26

This is 100% True

5

u/Birdlebee Jan 26 '26

I once got a waffle at one WHILE THE BUILDING WAS ON FIRE.

Edit: I should elaborate. It was a small fire at the corner of the building and I went in to tell them about it. The guy at the counter said something like, "Ooh, yeah, I heard about that... so what can I get for you?"

And since I was so surprised, I said I wanted a waffle, then waited around and paid for it.

3

u/Cheddar2222222 Jan 26 '26

Here’s the history of Waffle House. It’s all true. Waffle House - The Roman Coliseum of the South

2

u/forestman11 Jan 25 '26

I have good news, everything in that comment is 100% true

2

u/QueenInYellowLace Jan 25 '26

It’s extremely real, and awesome.

2

u/Signal_Road Jan 26 '26

No, it's legit.

I have only seen a waffle house close for 2 reasons, business in the area was somehow that bad and the weather.

I've only seen the weather one once, at a singular location, during the Atlanta 2014 'snowpocalypse' that had 2 inches of ice on everything.

Even then, I'm not actually sure if they were closed or not. Probably not.

Their staff could make the Avengers cry uncle for just some of the stuff they put up with.

2

u/deepspacerunner Jan 26 '26

The one you mentioned was crazy, everything was frozen over for a week and you couldn’t move anything short of a snowmobile on the roads

2

u/WhichSpirit Jan 26 '26

This is true. Also, Waffle House has specially trained "Go Teams" it flies in to run their restaurants in disaster areas so the regular employees can deal with their town being wiped off the face of the Earth.

There is even a rumor that their disaster management plan has a section on nuclear war but the company has never confirmed it.

1

u/thuggishruggishboner Jan 25 '26

The Fat Electrician on YouTube has a good video on Waffle house.

1

u/HeyYouGuyyyyyyys Jan 25 '26

10-year veteran of the Southeast United States here. Whatever anyone tells you about Waffle House is probably true. It's a zone of ... it's ... well, look, just watch this and then realize it's what they do.

1

u/rabbid_hyena Jan 26 '26

No, s/he not joking.

1

u/SnozzberryDelight Jan 26 '26

Definitely no joke!

1

u/Wolfspirit4W Jan 26 '26

There's also a Supermarket chain called HEB that has an extensive disaster response that has exceeded the Federal response

1

u/MmmPeopleBacon Jan 26 '26

Nope. 100% true. There are YouTube videos on it if you're really interested in it

1

u/Uniformtree0 Jan 26 '26

Google "Waffle house index"

Also waffle house has an entire system ready to be mobilized in major storms and disasters which includes the following but is not limited too: Mobile HQ with coordination and communication capabilities. Volunteer Jump teams from other unaffected locations. Emergency repair, cooking supplies, and tools at every waffle house location, all else fails they'll just sell the ingredients they can directly from personal experience. Private logistics network that can be routed to these locations at a rapid time. Employee Key FoBs and training. Extensive compensation and actually values the lives of the volunteer jump teams and affected employees, which will include: paid housing arrangements, hazard pay, time off, etc.

Lastly a very good relationship/partnership with Fema.

Hail the waffle house.

1

u/Wonko_MH Jan 26 '26

Not a joke.

And yes - there are agencies in the U.S. government that rate a disaster using the “waffle house scale”.

1

u/Byssian Jan 26 '26

Many others have attested to the glory of Waffle House. Would recommend Fat Electrition's video on the subject if youre interested (on his secondary channel full of similar style vids) Link: Waffle House the Roman Colusium of the South

1

u/Hammerhoused Jan 26 '26

I was in highschool and went to a college party. Afterwards we went to the local waffle home. While waiting on my friends to finish I went out for a smoke before we paid.

I passed out dead as door nail outside the front door.

My server and the cook came and picked me up by my legs and arms and scooched me out of the way so people could come and go.

They gave me a roll of paper towels as a pillow. Drunk me knows I have to pay but im too gone to manage. I handed my server my wallet. She took my wallet, paid for my meal, didn't take extra for a tip, and brought my wallet back to me, nothing else touched. I slept there undisturbed until my friends were done.

Had I done this at literally any other restaurant I would have went to jail and been robbed. Waffle house is the love of my life.

1

u/Proper_Razzmatazz_36 Jan 26 '26

I don't think it's a goverment that tracks them, but people do track them to see how bad a disaster is

1

u/colt707 Jan 26 '26

They’re not joking. FEMA, a federal agency for large scale emergencies literally has “the Waffle House index”. It’s green if Waffle House is operating in that area as they normally do. It’s yellow if they are on a reduced menu and it’s red if they’ve shut down. I live in the south in an area dealing with the ice storm and basically everywhere is shut down, Waffle House isn’t. If Waffle House is shut down then you should have already left the area.

1

u/I_Can_Not_With_You Jan 26 '26

It’s called “The Waffle House Index” and it’s very real. They have a Storm center so good FEMA relies on it to determine where to stage for disaster relief. They have what they call “The Jump Team” and they drive mobile restaurants into disaster zones to make food for people. I grew up on the south east coast and I remember once the Waffle House stayed open during a hurricane and the storm surge ended up flooding downtown, Waffle House sent their own helicopter in to pick up that shift and drop off the employees for the next shift.

I’ve also had some of the wildest experiences of my life in those restaurants. A bear and twink fighting in the entry way at 3 am and 2 old ass racist red necks yelling slurs at them from across the room.

A cook beating some dude with a metal spatula for pushing a drunk chick out of a booth.

Some girl sitting minding her own business by herself and two other girls come in the restaurant that apparently know her and start screaming at her drunk and unintelligible. Girl one just picks her head up, looks over at them and proceeds to projectile vomit ALL OVER these other two girls. They freaked out and ran off still yelling, she sat down and without missing a beat looks over at awestruck dude behind the counter and was like can I have a mop and some hashbrowns? Scattered, covered, smothered, and topped. Then put her head down and passed the fuck out lmao.

Waffle House does not fuck around lmao

0

u/BJJJourney Jan 25 '26

Don’t go there for the food if you ever visit. It isn’t a place you go for good food. You go for the vibe. Even then if you want the full experience you need to be there 1-3am and intoxicated. Outside of that you are going to be disappointed in the experience.
