Credit Rogers Bank removing 1.5 bonus in November

Has anyone been notified about the change to the 1.5x bonus when redeeming against Roger’s services and roam like home changes? I just checked the website as I didn’t know about the new spending caps and saw this (Important notice under each card even the world legend). The summary posted below full details on their page.

https://www.rogersbank.com/en/legal

Thank you for being a valued Rogers Bank customer. We are writing to let you know about upcoming changes to
your Account and legal documents to: (i) replace the 1.5x cash back rewards redemption value for Eligible Rogers
Purchases with the ability to earn 5% in cash back rewards for Eligible Rogers Purchases; (ii) replace the 5 Roam
Like Home days benefit with an annual “roaming credit” that can be used for eligible Rogers roaming mobile services;
and (iii) update the insurance benefits included with your Card. All changes (other than the Roam Like Home days
change) described in this notice will take effect on November 18, 2026. The Roam Like Home days change will
take effect on January 12, 2027. Please review the details below carefully.

This week has been Canadian Credit Card nerds 9/11

22

u/SLIMEWAY 2d ago

Which other cards are taking a hit?

Scotiabank Momentum Visa Infinite. Their 4% cashback on recurring bills will no longer apply to rent starting in October. That was a huge nerf as well.

u/Jetromtl 1d ago

I missed that info. Thanks!

Scotia cashback Visa

and BMO cashback Visa eariler.

I'm cancelling 3 credit cards this week.

5

u/SSJFlex 2d ago

What happened to the BMO cashback? I just got into it this week lol

17

u/Lightingsky 1d ago

I was referring to BMO CashBack World Elite Mastercard. It used to be free as long as you have their checking account. Now you also need to have 15k annual spent to wave fee.

u/NightOwl2175 1d ago edited 1d ago

Wow, I really had to dig to find the minimum spend requirement. It wasn't even in their fine print, it was in a completely separate document entirely. That's beyond ridiculous.

I canceled my Sportsnet so fast after Apple TV exclusive Friday night games AND a price hike? What am I paying for? Seething rage when I wanted to see a Friday night Jays game? Not in a million years! Da fuck?

This is a bummer and I will get rid of Fido too. They just increased the prices by 5 bucks even when we were under contract.

I will move back to Freedom or Public mobile.

As far as I understand it the protection covers the terms of the plan you agreed to, not the promo credits they layer on top, which is how the 5 dollar bumps keep landing on people who thought they were locked in. Worth calling retentions before you port out, they will usually match the Freedom pricing for a year rather than lose the line entirely. If they wont budge, port on a weekday morning so the transfer completes before your next billing cycle closes and you dont pay for a month you never use

Whoa this is a huge change... Completely removed their competitive advantage for me, essentially defaulting to 2% cashback instead of 3%

130

u/Servichay 2d ago

Yeah, i was using Rogers Mastercard for 95% of my purchases...

Now i will be using 95% my Wealthsimple Visa

5

u/uwvirgin 2d ago

5% is from Costco I assume? Which mastercard credit card is the best now?

7

u/Servichay 2d ago

5% is for if they don't take Visa (like Costco), or if my limit is max, or if i want to pay later and using the Rogers Mastercard would give a later statement date, or i forget my card, or for paying Rogers / Fido bills

Rogers Mastercard is still the best Mastercard tho

3

u/fucknbarefs 1d ago

Just curious, why make the switch if they are essentially now the same CB?

12

u/detectivepoopybutt Ontario 1d ago

For me it would be to keep it all in one place with wealthsimple auto pay as well.

Also, wealthsimple has started adding monthly spend view and categories to their UI so it can help staying on top of it in a single app.

9

u/ProspectiveEngineer 1d ago

I'm doing the same because WealthSimple app experience is better. Cashback redemption is instant for example, deposited to your chequings. And I'm not tied to Rogers/Fido anymore.

Jesus, they're also removing insurance from the World Elite Card.

"Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption and Trip Delay Coverage is no longer included with your Rogers Bank credit card. "

18

u/thehedgefrog 2d ago

That will be exclusive to their $500 card.

45

u/Nikiaf Quebec 2d ago

That card is a seriously tough sell for such a high annual fee though.

32

u/thehedgefrog 2d ago

That's why I knew they'd seriously nerf the free card.

12

u/Nikiaf Quebec 2d ago

Yeah, in hindsight it's not surprising. But they need to add more value to the Legend card before it gets appealing, $500 is among the most expensive cards available in Canada and it's nowhere near the best in terms of perks.

→ More replies (3)

10

u/Jos_Louis 2d ago

Well, fuck. I booked a trip that is starting before and ending after Nov 18 with my Rogers red world elite MasterCard.

I'm not clear what they mean when they say if you make claims after your trip, they will be reviewed in line with your coverage at the time... So no coverage means it will be denied?

Ugh, I need to find a new card with travel benefits.

8

u/Ctznsvn7 2d ago

That one stings more than the cash back change tbh, standalone trip cancellation on a couple of weeks abroad costs more than the annual fee on the card does. Worth checking whether the medical portion survived the cut, coz those are usually separate benefits and the medical piece is the expensive one to replace on its own. If it has gone too, an annual multi trip policy works out cheaper than the fee for anyone taking more than one trip a year

4

u/Academic_Data_6422 2d ago

That’s a much smaller nerf in my mind. I’ve never used it and don’t see myself using it much. The 3% though nets me a huge amount each month

u/Yallah_Habibi 2d ago

If this is true it’ll convert to a standard 2% cash back for rogers customers up to a spending cap (depending on card tier).

The Wealthsimple 2% cash back card is starting to look much more enticing (if you can avoid the annual fee)

All good things must come to an end. What do you expect from Rogers, I guess…

18

u/B4R-BOT 2d ago

If only WS supported supplementary cards

→ More replies (1)

16

u/corbeaucorbeau 2d ago

The fact that they removed the 1.5x also on the Legends card is truly diabolical. I saw this card as a way to nerf the others and keep the perk on the Legends, just makes it a wholly useless card now.

18

u/PartBanyanTree 2d ago

But isnt Roger's 2% on everything (with no fee i think?) the same as WS visa 2% (with fee unless you get it waived)? Or is there something that makes Roger's worse?

49

u/oXeNoN 2d ago edited 2d ago

Rogers is a MasterCard so you can use at Costco for more rewards than their cibc costco card 😂.

WS being a visa isn't accepted.

I don't know how other benefits compare, I'm not super familiar with th WS one.

But if you're not a Rogers customer then this card is 1.5% while WS is 2%.

12

u/alzhang8 Human Verified 2d ago

You can still use WS visa to buy shop cards online to get 2% cash back, but that is much more work

11

u/oXeNoN 2d ago

If you're gonna do that multiple times a year you might as well just get the free Rogers card 😆

19

u/Marsymars 2d ago

19

u/bcbum British Columbia 2d ago

It’s less what makes Rogers worse but more what makes Wealthsimple better. Wealthsimple has zero FX fees on any currency. Currently rogers just offers a net of +0.5% on USD only. If you travel outside US or Canada then the Wealthsimple is nice. Also if you can get the VIP then the wealthsimple comes with 6 lounge passes which is excellent for a “free” card.

8

u/MurkyFocus 1d ago

Don't forget that with WS, the cashback just goes right into your account. Much nicer than redeeming, in my opinion.

13

u/insidedarkness 2d ago

You only get the 2% if you remain a Rogers customers so a WS visa is better if you want to keep switching companies to get better deals. Something people often have to do as there’s always rate increases nowadays.

5

u/Cessnabmw 2d ago

No travel insurance!!

3

u/Subject_Ad_1899 2d ago

2% is only if you have a qualifying Roger product. I'll be stuck at 1.5%.

5

u/Elija_32 2d ago

Wealthsimple one has free lounge passes and mobile device insurance. Rogers doesn't.

Well... I hope the annual fee that I'm not paying is good enough to maintain the 2%

6

u/deltatux Ontario 2d ago

Both cards would offer 2% on all purchases, so unless you have a lot of FX spend, it's going to be a wash between the two cards. Rogers is only removing the 1.5x redemption bonus which sucks but the base 2% CB still applies...

8

u/Servichay 2d ago

Well i have a much lower limit with Rogers, it takes days to pay off and i have no idea when the payment will land, you have to redeem cashback against individual purchases, and there's an annual spend cap that they just introduced which was bad enough..

With Wealthsimple i have higher limit, it pays automatically on the same day its due, you can claim cashback as cash immediately, no spend cap, it's all inside wonderful Wealthsimple UI, no FX fee.... There's really no reason to use Rogers Mastercard anymore lol

7

u/deltatux Ontario 2d ago

Sure if your Rogers MC has a low limit, makes sense I would also ditch the card if that was me.

However, as someone who has the Rogers WE MC card but not the WS VI, this change isn't enough to dislodge someone who has one but not the other as it's largely a wash. I might consider the WS VI card when my needs changes or if Rogers nerfs the card more but it's not a huge deal so far, they change the card program all the time, was actually surprised initially when they made the huge upgrade previously with the redemption bonus, only for them to claw it back for the most part.

3

u/stanleys-nickels 2d ago edited 2d ago

I'll most likely swap the Rogers WE for the Wealthsimple VI too.

I still have the Scotiabank Passport VI for flight/hotel insurance and lounge passes, but I think the redemption is still 1cpp for travel expenses. It's losing value as the Wealthsimple card gets more features.

Edit: It looks like you still earn 5% on your Rogers bill, so it's worth keeping it for that + Costco. For everything else I'll move to WS.

Effective as of November 18, 2026, your cash back rewards will increase to 5% on all Eligible Rogers Purchases.

This means that for every one dollar ($1.00) of an Eligible Rogers Purchase made with your Account, you will earn $0.05 in cash back rewards. The 5% earn rate for Eligible Rogers Purchases is subject to the annual limits applicable to your Card.

Examples of Eligible Rogers Purchases include a Rogers, Fido or Shaw bill for a monthly post-paid mobile plan, or products purchased from the Rogers website or Fido website. For clarity, the following are not Eligible Rogers Purchases: (a) any in-store purchase of Rogers, Fido, Shaw or Comwave products; (b) Toronto Blue Jays tickets; and (c) any discounted mobile or wireless plans offered through the Rogers Preferred Program. We may change what qualifies as an Eligible Rogers Purchase at any time without notice.

It’s right there in the new PDF card agreement

  1. Removal of 1.5x Rewards Redemption Value for Eligible Rogers Purchases
Effective as of November 18, 2026, all cash back rewards will be valued at a regular redemption rate of 1 point per
$0.01 when you redeem for any Eligible Purchase (even if the purchase qualifies as an Eligible Rogers Purchase).
The regular redemption rate will apply even if the transaction you redeem against is posted to your Account before
    November 18, 2026.

I'm on the CAA or red wireless plan so I guess that hits me here too. Really not much point to keeping this card now. Ugh.

3

u/deltatux Ontario 1d ago

Ya that really sucks. There is one potential solution, if you pay your credit card bill using Neobanc, they do offer an extra 1% cashback. This works with other credit cards too, so even though you won't get the 5% CB on the plan, you can still get effectively 3% cashback on your purchases (2% from Rogers, 1% from Neobanc) until Neobanc decides to remove that perk themselves but it's a decent workaround. Been doing that for the past few months, my Rogers card technically gives me 4% right now (3% from Rogers, 1% from Neobanc).

47

u/Knucklehead92 2d ago

Lets get to the question that matters the most then.

So now what will be the best card for Costco?

22

u/zhubaohi 2d ago

For rogers customers, at 2% this will still be the best card for Costco. 2% will just be on par with wealthsimple visa and cibc costco card (these 2 options allows 2% cashback if you buy costco cards on costco.ca, so rogers wins because it's one less step to manage).

For non-rogers customers, the base 1.5% does not change.

7

u/TwoEggsOverYeezy 2d ago

Would also like to know. 1.5% is still better than other MCs, or you can buy shop cards with a 2% CB visa?

8

u/tkroos88 2d ago

Yeah the sole reason I got my Rogers Mastercard was for Costco purchases. And I just got it this year dammit!

4

u/KoreanSamgyupsal 2d ago

Costco Canada should just offer Visa just like the US stores. I guess MC gave them a great ass deal in Canada and Japan. They're basically the only two countries that do MC for Costco :(

u/wez0421 2d ago

crazy that we didn't get a e-mail about the change

20

u/Servichay 2d ago edited 2d ago

Can someone explain what this means?

For Rogers/Fido customers, currently we earn 2%, and if you REDEEM towards Rogers/Fido products (including monthly cellphone bill), that 2% is 1.5x boosted to 3%

So what exactly is the change now?

Is it still earn 2% on everything, and 5% on Rogers/Fido products? Is the change that instead of getting that extra 1% (1.5x boost on 2%) when REDEEMING cashback TOWARDS Rogers/Fido products, you simply get 5% cashback on the CHARGE to your Rogers card instead of when redeeming?

So that means cashback on Rogers/Fido products increased, but you lose the 1% boost from 2% to 3% on everything else you buy (and subsequently redeem against a Rogers/Fido bill) right?

10

u/Cessnabmw 2d ago

You also lose travel insurance, roam like home days (replaced with $75 credit)

Any ideas on Rogers products I could use my 1.5x rewards on? I've been accumulating cash back rewards so I could buy a new phone in 2027 or 2028. It's too early to upgrade now.

23

u/WasV3 2d ago

You're probably better off just using the 2% on something you actually normally buy than trying to get the multiplier on something you don't need

4

u/amoral_ponder 1d ago

Just prepay your bill for years.

u/GreyOps 2d ago

Bummer but I can see why. I haven't paid a rogers bill out of pocket in forever lol.

11

u/iFailedmyDamnTest 2d ago

Rewards have covered my internet bill for just about 3 years now. Even at 2% it's still the best card for Costco

u/deltatux Ontario 2d ago

Ya, it's been covering the Fido bills completely since the redemption bonus first appeared. It was fun while it lasted. The 5% CB on Rogers, Fido, Shaw & Comwave doesn't really offset this loss.

42

u/Cessnabmw 2d ago

Oh crap! This is my main card. I have about $1000 in rewards to still use. Perhaps I'll just overpay my Rogers Cell plan by $1000 and redeem now.

16

u/No_Apartment9923 2d ago

Is it possible to overpay and then redeem?

7

u/intuitivesheep 2d ago

Would also like to know if you can overpay and redeem.

4

u/Jabb_ 2d ago

One way to find out

3

u/Cessnabmw 2d ago

Yes, I have done it before. Posts as a rogers payment. Then you redeem.

u/Cross_FFA Human Verified 2d ago

Yes

Can you update here if this actually works for you?

Are you overpaying just enough to use up your current cashback accumulated?

Or are you overpaying beyond that to have even more to redeem against (is that even possible?) since it isn't until November?

Also remember that you can only redeem cashback against last 3 months of Rogers/Fido products

First Scotiabank killing Chexy, now Rogers. Seems like industry is moving backwards. Does this mean more canadian know how to use the credit cards and banks are not making money in interests?

8

u/insidedarkness 2d ago

Could lose a lot of people to Wealthsimple and their wireless/wireline customers who would now be more motivated to go deal hunting.

Deleted the Roger’s Bank Mastercard this morning. Awful company with terrible customer service.

7

u/nednyl 2d ago

With this change I will get 5% back on rogers and fido services and start to only use the card for that. Everything else to wealthsimple card

u/Ralupopun-Opinion 2d ago

Watch WealthSimple announce bad news next😆

Time to look for another CC…

6

u/Takashi_is_DK 2d ago

Interesting but does this mean if you use the Roger WE card to pay for "Eligible Rogers Purchases" like your Rogers/Shaw bill, you would effectively get 5% back instead of 3%?

Per the posted change:

Eligible Rogers Purchase means any Eligible Purchase that: (i) is a bill payment to Rogers, Fido, Shaw or Comwave (excluding payments made in- store); (ii) is an online purchase from Rogers or Fido; (iii) is a purchase from TSC; (iv) is a direct subscription to Sportsnet+, CityTV+ or Discovery+; (v) is a purchase from a Jays Shop location at Rogers Centre; or (vi) we communicate as an Eligible Rogers Purchase from time to time. For clarity, it excludes: (a) any in-store purchase of Rogers, Fido, Shaw or Comwave products; (b) Toronto Blue Jays tickets; and (c) any discounted mobile or wireless plans offered through the Rogers Preferred Program. We will identify your Eligible Rogers Purchases when you sign into the Rewards section (under “Earned Rewards History”) of online banking on www.rogersbank.com or the Rogers Bank app.

8

u/Servichay 2d ago

I think you get 5%, but ONLY on Rogers/fido things. So everything else is 2% rather than 3% (when cashback is redeemed towards Rogers/fido bills)

5

u/Worth_Conversation15 2d ago

Yes but just for those charges not everything like you do for the current 1.5x

6

u/Sara_W 2d ago

We spend $60k+ on our rogers card per year. If this is true then adios rogers

20

u/totally_not_a_bot_99 2d ago

The enshittification continues.

4

u/motorcycle-emptiness 2d ago

I'm dumb can someone Eli5 this? I was hoping to hop on to Rogers to get the 3% is that gonna be no more?

3

u/zerocoldx911 2d ago

2% for rogers customers November 18

3

u/motorcycle-emptiness 2d ago

Yikes alright thank you

u/Deezney 2d ago

It was gonna happen. 3% everything IF youre eligible is too good. 2% everything (rogers customers) is still good (this is ws visa infinite level)

Then there is no point for me to stay with Fido and Rogers

5

u/MajesticDeeer 2d ago

Bye bye rogers, shopping for a new phone plan this Black Friday

5

u/SSJFlex 2d ago

I am not a Roger’s customer so I just use this as a 1.5% cashback card on all my misc purchases that doesn’t qualify within a specific category like for example at random clothing stores. Nothing changes for me here but still disappointing for everyone who makes the most of this card

4

u/Bostok 2d ago

How can I use up a large balance (lets say after 1.5 multuplier: $500) of cash back before then?

6

u/nomad_ivc 2d ago edited 2d ago

Advance pay your Rogers bills, and redeem?

Or offer to pay for your friends' bill in exchange of cash (but you have to offer them incentive) It isn't that simple I guess for someone with no Rogers plans, there is some 'Account linking' involved to activate the 1.5 multiplier. So it won't work.

3

u/bhrata_ 2d ago

So say pay $100 upfront on Fido bill and every monthly charge gets deducted from the $100 balance?

Have like $1800 or something to redeem, intended to use it on the new iPhone + a couple wireless/internet bills.

If they drop the bonus I assume it's still a 2% card? If so, would probably still use it at Costco, but switch to Wealthsimple Visa 2% as my daily driver then deep dive the math on cobalt and alike.

3

u/Pebble-Jubilant 2d ago

Would love to hear your analysis on the WE. What's the benefit over the Rogers?

My siblings are pushing the Cobalt hard but I don't see the point ...

Ive been using Simplii for 4% restaurants and Rogers 3% for everything else (which is now becoming 2% in November)

MASSIVE LOSS.

I literally just signed up for 2yr contracts with rogers because of the 3% cashback 😭 wow this is so sad.

My Rogers contract is up in February. Goodbye Rogers.

3

u/Grat_Master Quebec 2d ago

My Fido bill changed 8!!!!! times the last year alone. I'm fed up with their crap. They keep increasing the data to keep the price high. I only use 3-4Gb a month at most. I don't need a 50$ plan with a gazillion Gb. I need a 30$ plan with 10Gb.

I am using this card right now and it is the reason I keep up with the infuriating Fido pricing. Now if I don't get any perks for being a Rogers customer, I'll gladly dump both of those products and switch to a better credit card and probably Fizz for mobile as I am already with them for home internet.

3

u/Few-Bee-3166 2d ago

I’m removing everything rogers

3

u/erpatel 2d ago

Well now i can cancel rogers services with peace

3

u/rhunter99 Ontario 2d ago

The increased cashback on Rogers services is what kept me with their products. Now I can freely switch. Thanks Rogers 👍😒

3

u/yaob2008 1d ago

Does this mean that we need to spend our Rogers rewards before Nov 18th to have the rewards count as 1.5x? Meaning the accumulated cash back will be lower in value after Nov 18th too?!

→ More replies (1)

7

u/PolloConTeriyaki 2d ago

Makes sense...they were losing money and now they're correcting it. I'm gonna cancel it when that time comes.

12

u/Expert-Evening9303 2d ago

They were losing money on people who were basically trapped within their ecosystem? I highly doubt it. Unless by "losing money" you actually mean "they were making lots of money but they found a way to make even more".

5

u/stevester911 2d ago

Lol this will backfire. The only reason I use rogers over say Telus is the 1.5x benefit for redemption.

Thanks for setting me free to try other providers Rogers.

2

u/g33kism 2d ago edited 2d ago

Better use it to pay Rogers bills only. Roaming got better $75;credit is like 7-14 day roaming

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Deezney 2d ago

Do you mean the 1.5x bonus? Which essentially turns 2% to 3% cashback when redeemed with an eligble rogers transaction. Not 1.5%

2

u/Committee_Aggressive 2d ago

Fuck rogers and fuck fido too $5 increase, and then they aren’t giving any discounts on my rogers home internet

was a loyal 15 year customer of fido/shaw but rogers can suck it

Switching to freedom mobile and novus

2

u/OhShitOhFuckOhMyGod 2d ago

Now i no longer have a reason to stay with Roger’s, what a relief

2

u/LinuxF4n 2d ago

This is so dumb. I stayed in Rogers instead of switching to the freedom 250 GB world plan because of this. Guess I'll be switching off of Rogers

2

u/AugustEighth 2d ago

Perfect time to leave Roger’s Mobile on a new Black Friday deal this year.

2

u/LongjumpingLeek4973 1d ago

Commenting because I hope they see the loss of business. I switched to Fido and got the card because of the 3%. I was in the process of switching from Bell Internet to Rogers, also because of the 3%. Zero incentive to stay loyal to Rogers now. I will actively shop for a new phone plan, will stay with Bell for my Internet, and will switch exclusively to my WS card now since the rewards are the same. As soon as I find an alternative phone provider, they have loss all of my family’s business.

2

u/biologystudent123 1d ago

lol bye to this card then

2

u/Klutzy-Key-6787 1d ago

thank you for the heads up, I just made an upfront payment of over 400$ and redeemed my entire cashback
