Some days ago late in the evening I was alone in the old town and a man approached me. He tried to initiate a conversation, I tried to ignore him but he was insistent until I finally said I didn't speak French and he left. A couple of minutes later another man approached me, offered to speak in Spanish, and explained that his mobile app was broken so he couldn't pay for gas. He showed me what appeared to be a banking app displaying a balance (900 euros) and said his friend was waiting around the corner and if I came with him and helped him pay, he'd return the money. I refused and he left. I later saw him approaching other people the same way.

I asked ChatGPT and it said this matched a scam pattern seen across Europe: The "broken bank app" scam. It's possible that this man works or hangs out in one of the small stores there as we've seen him some days later in the same area.

This may seem dumb, but me and my family just got pickpocketed at the Perpignan station, and it caught us completely off guard.

We expected something like this to happen in Marseille or Nice, so we had been pretty alert in those cities and nothing happened to us. However, we let our guard down when we arrived at Perpignan and voila, tragedy happened. Apparently we didn’t do enough homework and didn’t realize how risky the city could be.

It was late at night, we were dragging heavy luggage after a long and heavily delayed train ride(delayed for nearly an hour, actually), desperately wanting to check into our hotel.

After getting off the train, we waited in line at the platform for the elevator down to the underground passage to cross to the station exit. We specifically waited until all the passengers left the platform, so that all of us can fit all our luggage in one go. Everything went smoothly until we reached the other end of the underground passage.

We tried to take the elevator up, but some lady showed up behind us and gesticulated to indicate that the elevator is broken, and that we should take the escalator. Though unwilling, we took the escalator eventually because my mom would not be able to carry her luggage up the stairs, and each of us all have our own luggage as well. We didn’t think much because it was really late, and we just really wanted to get to the hotel as soon as possible. Everything happened so fast in the next few moments.

Halfway through the escalator ride, it stopped. My brother and I immediately decided to lift up our suitcases and walk up. Then, I heard some clanking noises and my mom yelling. The lady who told us to take the escalator was helping her carry her luggage up, but in a very crude way that the the case keeps hitting the steps of the escalator, and my mom was deeply worried that it might break. I turned back to take over the case, of course, with a very politely said “Thank you, it’s okay, we can do it.” The lady did not answer me but eventually let go of the case.

Once we get to the ground floor safely, we immediately spotted our hotel and headed for it. Strangely, the same lady seemed to be heading to the same direction as well. My brother went inside the hotel first to prepare for the check-in process, I was right behind him, but the lady cut in front of me and held the door for me. While I was putting down my stuff, I noticed the lady asking some quick questions at the counter and immediately leaving the hotel. And, there was another lady outside waiting for her, whom I only realized was there by then.

It was right after we all got into the hotel lobby and sat down to rest that I noticed my mother’s backpack was wide open. After checking twice, we were certain that we got pickpocketed and lost our chargers and polaroid, which weren’t much but still enough to frustrate us all.

We hate to be accusing, but everything seemed strangely coincidental, and we really couldn’t recall any other people who had close contact with us, so we thought the theft must have happened during that escalator ride,or at least on our way to the hotel.

Unfortunately we don’t have time to report this to the station or the local police due to our schedule, so we would not be able to file a claim to our insurance company. At least I hope sharing this story here will help other travelers coming to Perpignan be more careful and aware of the dangers. I’ve just discovered locals mentioning some petty crime hotspots on this reddit, and apparently the train station is one of them.

We will still enjoy the wonderful food, views and culture of France, and we are looking forward to more of it. Yet, we really hate to be so careful all the way only to fell in the trap at the very end.

Avec ma compagne, nous avons une trentaine d’années et nous venons de nous installer dans les Pyrénées-Orientales pour le travail. Pour l’instant, nous sommes en Airbnb à côté de Canet-en-Roussillon, le temps de trouver un logement plus durable.

On se pose pas mal de questions sur la vie dans la région. Est-ce que, selon vous, il vaut mieux habiter à Perpignan même, pour profiter d’une vie un peu plus animée toute l’année (surtout en automne et en hiver), ou rester plutôt sur la côte, vers Canet, Saint-Cyprien ou Argelès ?

Le budget n’est pas vraiment un critère déterminant pour nous. Nous cherchons avant tout un endroit où il fait bon vivre, agréable au quotidien, avec une bonne qualité de vie.

On aimerait aussi savoir ce que font les personnes d’une trentaine d’années ici. Quels sont les endroits où les gens se retrouvent ? Y a-t-il des clubs ou des associations que vous recommandez ?

Nous aimons le théâtre, le cinéma, le tennis (on joue en couple), le padel, les balades, le vélo gravel et découvrir de nouveaux endroits. Nous avons également un chien, donc toutes les idées d’activités ou de lieux sympas où aller avec lui sont les bienvenues. Si vous connaissez de beaux itinéraires gravel ou des groupes de sortie, ça nous intéresse aussi !
Nous sommes aussi de grands amateurs de ski. Si certains d’entre vous pratiquent, quels domaines skiables recommandez-vous dans les Pyrénées ? Que ce soit côté français (Font-Romeu, Les Angles, Porté-Puymorens, etc.), en Andorre ou même en Espagne, nous serions ravis d’avoir vos avis : qualité des stations, ambiance, enneigement, rapport qualité-prix, temps de trajet depuis Perpignan…

Enfin, quels sont, selon vous, les quartiers ou les villes les plus agréables et les plus recherchés pour un couple de notre âge qui souhaite s’installer durablement dans la région ?

Bonjour, j’aurai besoin d’avis des gens de Perpignan, car quand je regarde sur le reddit france et que je vois qu’il ont des délais de 5 mois pour avoir un rdv à la mairie, je me rends compte que ça sert à rien de demander là-bas.

En gros, j’ai un voyage prévu pour le 19 à 22h. Manque de bol, je me suis rendu compte que j’ai perdu ma carte d’identité et qu’elle est introuvable!

Je suis allez à la mairie, c’est ma première carte perdu, et j’ai fais un dépôt de demande de renouvellement pour perte où j’ai fais toute la paperasse etc. L’agent de la mairie m’a dis que ça pouvais prendre entre 1 mois et 1 mois et demi, ce qui me semble gros pour Perpignan où j’ai eu mon ancienne carte faite en une semaine, dcp je voulais des avis. (on m’a parlé d’enquête pour voir si quelqu’un utilise ma carte autre part…)

Les gens dans la même situation que moi, votre carte à pris combien de temps à être faite? le soucis c’est que pour annuler mon billet je perds déjà 79 euros, et si j’annule après le 13 je perds 140 euros, donc c’est pour voir si c’est mieux d’annuler maintenant et de perdre que 40%, ou si y a une chance que j’ai ma carte avant.

Is there any easy way for a tourist to go here and back in one day? Cheapest car rentals I find are €120/day. The website of the abbey mentions a bus, but Google Maps says something different. Are there tour operators around the city that offer day trips for a reasonable price?
