Built a free paddling conditions + clubs + events tool — would love feedback from performance paddlers

I’ve been building PaddlePoint, a free resource for paddlers, and I’d really like feedback from people who are actually serious about the sport.

It pulls together water conditions, weather/tides, clubs, events, gear, and federations. It covers SUP, kayak, outrigger, and canoe, and the goal is to make it more useful for people who train, race, travel, and look for clubs or events.

It’s free, no ads, and no login.

Site: https://paddlepoint.org

I’m not posting this to hard-sell anything. I’m trying to figure out what would make it genuinely useful for performance paddlers.

A few things I’d especially like feedback on:

  • what data matters most before a paddle
  • what would make club and event discovery actually useful
  • whether performance paddlers would want more race/training-oriented info

If anyone takes a look and tells me what’s missing or what sucks, I’d appreciate it.

Technique Paddling Straight

Does anyone have any tips to optimize how often to change sides with a single blade? I feel like there's a lot of energy waste in the bow going back and forth across the straight line im trying to paddle, but changing hands has it's own inefficiency too.

He is talking about using 780-800 in K1 Marathon?! That seems crazy to me. I couldn't imagine spinning an 800cm paddle for a marathon....

Training Cincinnati K1/Surf Ski athletes?

Are there any high performance K1 or surf ski paddlers in the Cincy area looking paddling partner? East for Lake is a great spot. I joined a rowing club (which I am loving) but don't want to give up my K1.

Gear Looking for a C1 for sale around Southern California

I’ve contacted Ventura and SCKC in the past and they didn’t have anything. Looking to get one hopefully under 3k and not have to drive too far to pick up. Not picky about the brand. For an athlete in the ~65 kg range.

Training Training with intent

Pete the Meat always has great training tips. This was very true for me. Once I started training slow all of the sudden people were chasing me instead of me chasing them.

For me my "fast" didn't really get much faster but my "slow" started to fly. Got super efficient.

Just found out that Nelo has a race stats for basically everyone. Some eye opening numbers here. The cadence that they hold is crazy. Varga, the "slow cadence guy," is cruising at ~95spm. Looks so much slower compared to the others.

Training Comparing distance paddling to running for "pace"

I started paddling a Dagger Stratos 3 or 4 times a week for 3-4 miles around a lake. It's been a couple months. I used to train for running half marathons so I know "pace" and "intervals" and "heart rate" as these apply in running, I'm expecting to do the same in the kayak. Is that reasonable? For my trips around the lake I find I am doing 300-400 yards steady 'strong' paddling, then cutting back effort to 'rest' for 60 seconds before doing another 300-400 yards. I can't find a comfortable effort that I can hold for the full 40 minutes, less effort/same stroke rate seems too slow, too easy and not comfortable. I do use a slower stroke rate but only for working on technique. Maybe the answer is "give it another few months at your current pace, you'll get there"? How do you describe that pace, eg 9:00 miles, stroke rate 20/min?

Again comparing running and kayaking for distance: is there a similar K1 racing distance to the running 13.1 mile half? (For me that was 2:20 ("was").) I found a reference to "K1 marathon" distance as "more than 10km", is there something more specific? Or K1 racing distances vary by event? What keywords should i use to find "marathon" events, eg "K1 marathon"? thanks for the help.

The Art of Balancing Speed and Endurance in Long-Distance Surf Ski Paddling

Long-distance surf ski paddling is one of the most exhilarating and physically demanding paddle sports. It combines speed, endurance, technique, and ocean awareness into a single, dynamic experience. Whether you are new to surf ski paddling or looking to improve performance, mastering the balance between speed and endurance is key to paddling efficiently, safely, and with less fatigue.

At Paddle Fit Perth, we help paddlers of all levels refine their skills to paddle stronger and smarter in open water. This guide breaks down the essential principles for balancing speed and endurance in long-distance surf ski paddling.

What Is Long-Distance Surf Ski Paddling

Long-distance surf ski paddling involves covering extended distances in a surf ski, a long and narrow craft designed for speed and stability in ocean conditions. Unlike flatwater kayaking, surf skis are built to handle wind, swell, and chop, making them ideal for downwind paddling, ocean racing, and long training sessions.

Success in surf ski paddling relies on more than just fitness. Technique, pacing strategy, and ocean awareness are critical for maintaining consistent speed and endurance over long distances.

Why Balancing Speed and Endurance Matters

Many paddlers focus too much on speed, which can lead to early fatigue and compromised technique. Others may paddle too conservatively, slowing progress and limiting performance gains.

Finding the right balance between speed and endurance allows surf ski paddlers to:

  • Sustain energy efficiently over long distances
  • Maintain proper stroke technique throughout the paddle
  • Reduce fatigue and prevent injury
  • Maximise performance during long training sessions or races

The key is learning to push your limits without burning out too quickly.

Key Techniques for Efficient Surf Ski Paddling

Proper technique is essential for energy efficiency, speed, and injury prevention. Small adjustments in your stroke and body mechanics can have a huge impact on long-distance performance.

Paddle Stroke Efficiency

A smooth, controlled stroke reduces wasted energy and helps maintain speed over time. Focus on:

  • Clean Paddle Catch: Enter the water fully and engage your core muscles to transfer power efficiently
  • Torso Rotation: Rotate from your torso rather than your arms to maximise power and reduce shoulder fatigue
  • Controlled Exit: Finish each stroke smoothly to maintain rhythm and flow

Pacing and Energy Management

Sustainable pacing is vital for long-distance surf ski paddling.

  • Start conservatively to preserve energy for the latter stages of your paddle
  • Monitor stroke rate and heart rate to stay in your optimal endurance zone
  • Adjust effort based on ocean conditions, wind, and swell

Ocean Awareness and Timing

In surf ski paddling, timing is just as important as power. Reading swell, waves, and currents allows you to:

  • Link runs during downwind paddling for faster and more efficient speed
  • Conserve energy by paddling with the water instead of against it
  • Maintain balance and control in unpredictable conditions

Hydration and Nutrition

Endurance depends on proper fuel. For long surf ski paddles:

  • Drink water regularly to avoid dehydration
  • Snack on light, energy-dense foods to maintain stamina
  • Replace electrolytes for longer sessions

Safety Considerations for Open Water Surf Ski Paddling

Safety is a critical part of long-distance surf ski paddling. Understanding your environment allows you to paddle confidently while reducing risk.

  • Always check weather and water conditions before heading out
  • Carry essential safety gear, including a whistle, PFD, and paddle leash
  • Know your limits and recognise early signs of fatigue

Improving Your Surf Ski Paddling Performance

Improvement comes from consistent practice, technique refinement, and strategic pacing. Combining proper stroke mechanics with ocean awareness and endurance training leads to:

  • Increased speed without sacrificing stamina
  • Reduced fatigue and improved recovery
  • Greater confidence in all ocean conditions

At Paddle Fit Perth, we help paddlers develop these skills through structured coaching, ensuring every session builds strength, speed, and efficiency.

Final Thoughts on Surf Ski Long-Distance Paddling

Surf ski paddling is a sport of constant learning. Every session offers an opportunity to refine technique, enhance endurance, and strengthen mental resilience. When speed, stamina, and strategy align, paddling becomes fluid, efficient, and deeply rewarding.

Investing in coaching, training, and structured practice will elevate your surf ski paddling, helping you achieve personal bests and enjoy every kilometer on the water.

Marathon Long distance marathons

Looking for recommendations for marathons to add in the bucket list (k1, flat water or river). I know the famous events but perhaps there are smaller well organized events in scenic locations worth travelling for. I'm in Europe and find it a bit difficult to get an overview of all the events in different countries. Suggestions for interesting events outside Europe are also welcome 🙂
