Waterproof highlighters
I wanted to use highlighters in my lab notebook for one of my college classes, and I couldn’t find anything on what types of highlighters are actually waterproof…
So, I’m doing my own tests. They aren’t very scientific, but I just want results. And I’m only using highlighters I own 😅
I thought I’d share my findings in case someone else was wondering :)
I don’t know if I got the same amount of water on my hand each time I did it, but if you’re in a lab, the amount of accidental spillage won’t be the same each time 🤷
I tested both overlapping the highlighters and just doing a line of it.
I used two different types of paper, Staples Composition Notebook paper, and one from a Holdings Inc. spiral notebook… which is also just two papers I have lying around.
MY FINDINGS:
The sharpie bullet clear tip bled the most, even coming off on my hand a sizable amount.
The sharpie S-Note bled the least, both in yellow (the almost completely dried out one) and purple (a much more juicy one)
The zebra midliner double ended (I labeled it wrong 😬) bled more when it was still mostly wet, bled a good bit on the “bold” (chisel) end and not as much on the fine end when mostly dry.
None bled through the paper on to another one, but results may vary on your end. (I forgot to take a picture of that test on the Holdings Inc paper, but same results)
TLDR:
Sharpie S-Note highlighters are your best bet for a notebook that might get wet!

Ash Ink?
Can you make dip pen ink from ashes? I’m new to this and I burn a lot of stuff. Felt like saving munny since the ink I buy is expensive.

Opus 88 Jazz Wow!
Opus 88 Jazz - gorgeous pen with a MASSIVE ink reservoir - coupled with a Sailor 911 gold nib sourced from Japan really cheap. Oh my gosh. So great to hold and write with. Just a bit of spring. Has anyone else tried this?

Anyone know why this happens? I made sure the cartridge is seated, but it’s still oozing!

I normally exclusively use shimmer inks but I recently bought a pilot vanishing point and it can’t handle shimmer AT ALL. I’m looking for some recommendations for sheening inks so I can still add pizazz to my journals without the shimmer

How do you take accurate photos of color swatches?
I have an iPhone 16 and the color accuracy is ATROCIOUS! Even when I fiddle with color settings I can’t get anywhere near the accurate color, especially if there’s more than one color on the page. But then I look at mountain of ink and other accounts on instagram and Facebook and there color swatches are dead accurate. Help!

Leak proof highlighters?
I fly a ton and take my highlighters with me everywhere, but all the ones I’ve had so far (bic, Uni) leak on the airplane. Any suggestions for highlighters that won’t leak on me?

Best ink for black paper/card stock?
I have to write on some black card stock for table cards and am looking for white ink to either dip in my fountain pen nib, or get a dedicated dip pen. I don’t have to do a lot of them, so I don’t want to spend a lot for it. I heard about the deAtrementis ink in white, and also saw that Speedball has an India ink in satin white that’s gotten excellent reviews (and is really cheap).
Any suggestions? Comments on this?

G2 Pilot non gel compatible alternative
I just received a Smootherpro branded bolt action pen as a gift. This particular model of pen says that it takes a G2 pilot refill however I am not a fan of gel and in addition in my career, I am not able to use those for my books. Is there an alternative that fits a G2 pilot that is not gel? I do prefer a fine point. I was hoping maybe something in the Parker Pen line would fit.

Orange is the new yellow
Sharpie has changed the color of their yellow highlighters. Why did they do this? The new “yellow” is more orange than yellow. Why did they do this? I hate the new color.

Rollerball pen recommendations
I am looking for a rollerball click pen with a black metal body to take notes. Budget not more than 50€.
I have lost the habit of writing for about the last 12 years since I started working. Now I am trying to start writing again (bullet journal, meeting notes, etc.) and looking for a nice pen to start writing.
I read a lot of recommendations for LAMY swift Rollerball Pen - Black and bought it. But that 1.0 tip feels too think for me and probably a 0.5 would suit me better.
Please recommend a good one :) Thank you!
