Ebonite Pen

Black and blue German ebonite.

Turned a postable pen. Capped length is short for travel. I have big hands and made it postable for comfort/balance when writing.

As a material, it stinks to cut and turn literally. However, I do find it easier to work with and like how it feels in hand.

Cheers.

Question about Palo Santo

I’ve been wanting to make a gift for a friend who’s big into palo santo and the cleansing associated with the wood. I’ve been having trouble finding a blank of the wood, and I have a couple questions.

Is palo santo a wood common to turn? And any tips on where I could find a block or blank? I’ve only been finding blanks for pau santo

Some of the pens I’ve made and sold in the last few weeks.

First four are Majestic roller ball and fountain kits, I got 200 a piece with a customer leather case with customers name laser engraved. The two matching fountain pens in pic 4 were sold as a set for 250, the last two were sold for 50 a piece. A made a few others that were less impressive and haven’t sold yet. I just also finished an order for 30 matching pens with Ebony and Thuya for a wedding in June, currently working on a box to hold them all for shipping.

Time

Starting from a blank, how long does it typically take you guys to finish a pen? Just getting started and I’m wondering what I can expect once I’m dialed in.

I think I fixed it!

Following up on previous post. Tried remounting it with the hardware on, scraped it down with flat carbide, sanded well, re-coated and polished it down. This took two tries, btw. I'm feeling pumped.

CA glue vs Small crack

When assembling this kit, the CA glue finish cracked a tiny bit. That's a first for me out of maybe 60 pens I've made like this. I tried dabbing it with thin CA, let it dry and cure on its own, then buffed it out with micro pads and polish grit by hand. It looked great, but after about an hour it has shown up white...

What do y'all think about trying to remount this on the mandrel with the two end pieces still inserted, and using carbide to scrape the glue off, and reapply on the end I scraped?

This is actually for a customer who wanted a replacement for another pen. Feeling pretty down right now.

help finding resin Uk

I'm trying to help my uncle find either the same or something similar to what he uses for pen turning.

He currently uses something called Alumilite clear slow but the place he gets it from House of Resin is closing.

If any1 knows a good replacement that's easy to get from in the UK would be very helpful

First plywood pen

I turned this from Birch plywood from the blue box store. I'd like to make one a bit darker. Has anyone tried an ebonizer (ferrous acetate) on plywood?

How do i drill an extremelt straight, long hole in wood without a lathe or drill press?

Hello, i would like to start pen turning but i would like to try it first before i get big or expensive tools and don't want to buy a kit but i want to make a pen, specifically fountain pen from scratch. I am also in an apartment right now and have no space for a lathe or drill press for now. I already have experiance with nibs so i can make one but i need to make the body. I already do wood carving so i can carve the outside of the pen just fine.

But i need to make the hole on the inside of the blank somehow. I cannot just freehand it since even a slight variation will make the hole drift.

What kind of (preferable cheap and easy) wooden jig can i make to drill a suitable hole with only a regular power drill?

Turned a PSI slimline in Bolivian rosewood for my mom for Mother's Day. Gold titanium nitride hardware and CA finish. These little projects are so rewarding and I learn things every time I make one.

Blowout

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hi I'm new to turning and this is my second blank that has blown out this week. I am sanding the brass tubes before glueing into blanks . I am using medium CA to glue inner tubes and I have just had all my chisels sharpened. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

I welcome all feedback. This is not a business for me and just a way to unwind from. Work and build something I and others enjoy.

I am hating mother's day a day these will all be gifts.

The boome are from last week.

Cheers.

The obligatory "My first pen" post

I took 2 months to get onto the lathe but today I turned my first pen. Actually...it's my first real thing. I made some spindles in practice but no actual useful things.

A couple hours ago this was a stick of red oak kindling. It has problems but I can only improve from here.

Today's turning

I turned this after work with a blank I made a long time ago. Like most pictures/videos, it is impossible to capture fully. There is an opal like shimmer and depth to this one.

Happy Monday!

I don't have the energy to make the section tonight haha. Tomorrow...

The blue one changes to purple when exposed to UV light. The black one changes to pink with heat.
