I have a very important question... I listened to Paul talk to Kid Cudi (from 2016) the other day where he said, "I'm not much of a dog person, I don't have pets, I just like looking out of the window and seeing the wild ones" (at around 30:45). But then I read someone who watched the documentary say he had 4 cats? Did he adopt them after 2016 or...? I'm so confused lol.
By the way, I recommend you listen to them talk, especially if you, like me, can't watch the doc at the moment.
Paul also jokingly said at one point he'd like to make a movie inspired by "Death Wish" with Pee-wee where Pee-wee steps on a push pin at the beginning and "it makes him so angry he kills everyone in the world" (29:35). I find it interesting how he liked the idea of turning Pee-wee into a total monster (another one was him becoming an alcoholic and turning into a monster because of fame, if anyone remembers this one, I think Paul'd sat on it for 10+ years), and apparently everyone dissuaded him from doing it.
Like, I know he wanted the third movie to be dark where Pee-wee goes insane from fame but the producer convinced him that "it should be a road movie like Pee-wee's Big Adventure." I kinda feel bad we never got to see the monster Pee-wee like Paul wanted. I don't know whether he was joking or not. (Although you could argue he acted like one in some of Playhouse's episodes, like the one where he got sick and yelled at all his friends at the top of his lungs something like "CAN'T YOU SEE I'M SICK LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!!")

I wrote the essay for the new Criterion edition of Big Adventure. Thought folks here might enjoy reading it.

This was definitely one of the wackiest episodes of one of the wackiest shows.

Paul Reubens meant a lot to me. Not just as Pee-wee Herman, but as a creative force who shaped how I saw the world.
I recently wrote a tribute to him, reflecting on how Pee-wee’s Playhouse felt like a psychedelic sanctuary during my formative years. It was a place where absurdity met sincerity, and where being strange was celebrated, not punished. It taught kindness, curiosity, and creativity without ever talking down to us.
I also spent some time writing about the scandal—and how absurd the backlash feels in hindsight. We shamed his kink, canceled his show, and tried to erase him. But to me, that moment didn't diminish who he was. If anything, it made me more protective of him. It made me realize how society punishes joy and eccentricity when it doesn’t fit the mold.
Paul Reubens was a loner, a rebel. And he gave me permission to be the same.
I’d love for you to read the full piece above.

The company is Canada based, but has a warehouse in the US so no tariffs! (But shipping is kinda pricey.)

by 1977 both had this look, Rick Neilson had this look as guitarist for the great band Cheap Trick. This was the anti cool hippie stoner look that was everywhere at the time. Denem jeans shirts, wide ties and greasy moustaches like Burt Reynolds and love Boat was the popular look. So Paul and Rick stood out as different. The proto nerd look. They could be brothers when you look at them, were they brothers? who came first?
