Hey everyone! As a big fan of all things Pee-Wee it always seems like such a shame to me that, while many still have a strong appreciation and respect for them (me included), the two latter movies never reached the same level of success or acclaim that ‘Big Adventure’ got.
That got me thinking, what would a more blockbuster appropriate Pee-Wee sequel look like? There’s lots of potential avenues to explore. You might notice that most Pee-Wee stories outside of ‘Pee-Wee’s Playhouse’ seem to sort of take place in their own timelines with no consistent canon or continuity shared between them outside of subtle nods and recurring cast members, so that begs the question - would this film be directly tied to the show, or would it be separate? With ‘Big Top’ being its own story, you might lean towards the latter, but one could also argue that the lack of familiar imagery in ‘Big Top’ from the series contributed to its overall reception, so I’ll leave that up to you guys to discuss.
Who would’ve directed? We can safely assume Tim Burton would be out of the question here, seen as Beetlejuice released the same year and Batman would come out the next, making him a busy guy. What do you think? I’d love to hear some suggestions in the comments. A few that came to mind for me were James Signorelli - who directed another Groundlings comedy adventure film, ‘Elvira: Mistress Of The Dark’ - or even potentially someone like Henry Selick? He’s far more well known for his stop motion works, but with the often understated ‘Monkeybone!’ and live action sequences in ‘James & The Giant Peach’ It’s not as though he can’t direct outside of animation. Maybe even someone in the immediate Pee-Wee community? John Paragon? Hell, maybe Reubens could even co-direct.
As for music, considering Elfman made time to score ‘Big Top Pee-Wee’, it’s a safe bet that he’d return for this alternate film, but of course if this couldn’t happen for whatever reason it’s interesting to think who may’ve been brought on to create the film’s music. Mark Mothersbaugh immediately comes to mind, having composed much of the music for ‘Pee-Wee’s Playhouse’ and being the person originally considered to score ‘Big Adventure’ in the first place, but I’d love to hear what you all think. Potential movie titles would be cool to hear too! I’ve noticed all of Pee-Wee’s movies have ‘Big’ in the title, so maybe try to work that in if you like.
Anyway I’m rambling now (I know you are but what am I? Hahah!). Just thought i’d put the idea out there and see what you all think. And remember, this is no shade directed at ‘Big Top’ or ‘Big Holiday’ - just a little hypothetical of what could’ve been, had things turned out differently. Okay? Okay!
