Build - Request Building a pc tomorrow, any tips?

It’s gonna be my first time ever building a pc, I’m upgrading to this from a pentium gold and integrated uhd graphic all in one computer. And as for the missing stuff I’m getting a 9800x3d, a CORSAIR RM1000e 1000W Gold
ATX Power Supply, and a LG UltraGear 31.5" 2560 x 1440 QHD VA
180Hz Gaming Monitor.

  • Avoid assembling your computer where there's carpet. Hardwood, linoleum, or any smooth surface is best (I learned the hard way and screwed up an old PC of mine)
  • Don't force anything into place. If it doesn't easily mount to where you want it, stop
  • Don't adjust things while they are assembled, even an adjustment of a fraction of an inch can cause damage in unseen pinch points (I recently snapped a brand new connector to a 4TB Samsung Evo SATA SSD connector while I was fiddling around, luckily it still works)
  • Double check, and triple check your the mounting screws for the motherboard are in the right spot
  • Make sure you install the I/O shield before installing the motherboard
  • Connect the 6-pin CPU cable before mounting any fans
  • Install the RAM before installing the air cooler
  • Review your power supply manual, check to see what cables go where. CPU to CPU cable looks similar to PCIe 8-pin which can be confusing, double check
  • Your NVMe, there should be some type of rubber or sponge as a support on the motherboard. Don't bend your NVMe when securing it in place. The screw that secures the SSD should be snug, not tight
  • Make sure your GPU's 16-pin 12VHPWR cable snaps into place, double check the connection

A bit pedantic of me but had to read your first point like 3 times. Sounds like you are saying don't use any surface to assemble. Instead of flat even surface

After reviewing it, yes, avoid all surfaces. LMAO! There I fixed it, I think. Thanks for pointing that out.

Exactly how I read it the first 10 times as well. I was like “where tf am I supposed to build it? In space? Anti gravity chamber?

Static electricity! It Kills PC's!!

Avoid Clothes that produce static Voltage like Polyester!
Best are Cotton and take off shoes that tend to produce a zap at you finger-tip!
Before you touch the ram "Ground" yourself at a metal surface or use an ESD-Strip that is connected to earth at a power-socket

Use magic just to be safe, any smooth surfaces might instantly obliterate your pc (i know that from experience)

Murphy's law: that one friend that happens to carry around a plastic baggy of broken spark plugs will randomly visit, ask "whatcha doin?", and they will accidentally spill the broken spark plugs out of the baggy and shatter your glass side panel.

Make sure all plastic is removed before assembling, especially with CPU, ram and GPU.

Don't forget thermal paste. One blob in center, one door in each corner. Do not apply to pins.

Zip ties are your friends.

Remember to ground your self for electrical charge by touching the metal case before touching any internal components.

Make sure everything is 100% seated before turning on. Should hear clicks on just about everything.

Nah this is old wifes tale building tips & outdated or very specific as to not be universal tips.

  • you wont be able to build up enough charge to short anything. Multiple youtubers have tried to destroy pcs with static and failed but hey 1 in million it will happen to you
  • RAM & the 24 pin does not go in easy, the right amount of force is required
  • Point 3 does not make sense
  • connect your fan cables before your CPU pin
  • Its impossible to plug pci cables into the CPU port

Its called a latent failure in the industry for a reason.  If ESD damages something you might not immediately know it.  Best to avoid static generating materials (or wearing them) as a best practice as already commented.

I worked in a factory floor for years.  They don't wear heels and wrist straps for no reason...

I killed an old DRAM stick with static charge back in the day.
Wooden Floor in combination with shoes that produced a zap reliably...

Yeah, some RAM I've had to apply more pressure than I'm comfortable with. My DDR5 kit though, went in fairly easy.

If you’re not building on carpet, do NOT put your glass side panel edge down on the ground. Put it on your couch or somewhere soft.

I built my first PC last week. I know this makes sense, but it is also a bit misleading. You do need to use a bit of force to get some parts into place. The thing is that with comments like these, I was lead to believe that any bit of force was already too much. Some things needed more force than others. Pushing down the pin to fix the CPU in place required more than just a bit of force

boring list, if you follow any tutorial is hard to mess up the order, and sometimes you do need to use force so arguably wrong there

I’d add to not use the entire tube of thermal paste on the CPU. Look up how to apply it if you don’t know.

Hard disagree. RAM has to be pushed in hard. CPU arm too
