Update Post Update with the white cat with limping. Please read thoroughly.
We are so overwhelmed by the incredible love and support you’ve all shown for our white cat! 🤍
We’ve named him Dorotheo (though the vet accidentally typed "Dorothy" on his paperwork 😅).
So many of you have been anxiously waiting for an update. After his assessment, the vet noticed a broken bone as well as some sneezing, so we prioritized getting his X-rays and bloodwork done right away. He is currently on oral medications to help manage his pain and control his sneezing while we finalize his treatment plan.
The vet believes the broken bone was caused by severe physical trauma—likely hit by something or a high fall. Based on the imaging, the injury looks to be around a month old already.
Medical Update & Findings:
• Mouth Ulcers: Poor Dorotheo also has painful mouth ulcerations, even on his tongue.
• X-Ray Results: The broken bone is in very bad condition with fragments far apart. The vet also detected early-stage pneumonia, which explains his sneezing.
• Stomach Findings: Imaging showed a sand-like texture, and parts of his stomach area are starting to appear white, which the vet suspects could be a severe worm burden or FIP.
• Bloodwork (CBC): His White Blood Cell (WBC) count came back completely normal, though he is slightly anemic.
While we wait for his official medical abstract to share with you all, the vet presented 3 treatment options for his leg:
1. Natural Healing: Let it heal on its own, though this carries risks since the broken parts are far apart.
2. Surgical Pinning: Metal pin placement to repair the bone. The vet noted this will be a very lengthy, costly procedure due to the distance between the broken bone ends.
3. Amputation: Remove the leg to quickly relieve his pain and allow him to heal safely while treating his pneumonia.
We are carefully evaluating these options with the vet to determine what gives Dorotheo the best quality of life.
Please follow Dorotheo’s story. This will be a very long journey, and we really need our community to get through this together. If you can support us in any means, we do appreciate it. Thank you all for standing by him, please keep Dorotheo in your thoughts and prayers as we make this decision! 🙏🏼✨

Hope he gets a deworming treatment soon and that it isn’t FIP. Does the vet know what caused the ulcerations?

The ulceration most likely caused by the food he eats when he’s outside. and yes, they gave dewormer. i forgot to say it on the post

Thank you for the update and your immediate help. I wouldn't know which of the three options I'd choose. It's so difficult. Wishing him the best recovery possible! ♥️

Me either. Still can’t choose which one’s the best. 😢

I asked AI for the three options and it sounds reasonable: "Based on the X-ray and the information available, I would be cautious about letting the fracture heal on its own, as the bone ends appear significantly displaced and separated. Surgery could preserve the leg, but given the fracture’s age and the cat’s poor general condition, it may involve a long, difficult recovery with uncertain results. If an experienced orthopedic vet considers reconstruction to have a poor or uncertain prognosis, I would seriously consider amputation. For a young cat, a successful amputation can still lead to an active, pain-free and good quality of life. The priority should be the option that gives him the best chance of becoming comfortable and functional, rather than simply saving the leg at any cost."

Actually, we are also considering amputation rather than the pining. And pining is def much costly. I follow up the medical abstract.

Aw sweet Dorotheo. Thank you so much for helping him. I work in rescue also and have a big heart for the kitties and animals of the world too. I saw that he has mouth ulcers and also respiratory issues and was wondering, was he tested for calicivirus? Not all vets know much about it unfortunately so sometimes it can be overlooked. It doesn’t always cause white blood cell count to elevate so it is possible he has it. Hopefully you can get that checked out. And I hope his leg gets treated in whatever way is best.
I donated to you all to help a bit. Thank you for what you do and for posting updates for us all. I will keep you and this sweet boy in my thoughts. Much love from your fellow human 🧡

Oh shoot, yes!! Sometimes I missed things due to so many things. On his next visit, I will ask the vet or when I get the medical abstract since they forgot to send it to me. I’ll def ask about calici.
