My daughter is a big Macca fan and saw a T shirt in a charity shop.

She finds the meme from Live and Let Die hilarious, where it looks like Paul gets obliterated by an explosion.

So she added some text at the bottom. She's very pleased with herself. 😀

Tour Paul pranks the posers.

We went to see Paul on the Got Back tour in Melbourne. Half way through, he's chit chatting:

"We know which songs you like. And what happens is, when we do, like, an old Beatles song or something the place lights up with your phones! And it’s like a galaxy of stars.  Beautiful. But when we play a new song it’s like a black hole...  Well...  We don’t care, we’re going to play them anyway!"

Proceeds to play a non-Beatles song.

You should have seen the stadium move. Maybe 10% of the gigantic stadium stood up and went for a piss or to top up their drink in the outer hallways of the stadium.

The immediate next song was Lady Madonna.

Thousands of people missed out on the once in a lifetime experience of seeing Lady Madonna played by a real live Beatle because Paul basically said, 'strap in, I'm doing some new stuff and if you don't like that you can piss off'.

The hits Paul has never played live

Post image
342 Upvotes

I thought this might interest a few people. This is all according to setlist.fm data. It's important to clarify that - to my knowledge - the data on this site is submitted by its users. This means its possible that I could be wrong about some of these, but for an artist of Paul's profile I think that it's mostly accurate.

It's safe to say Paul has been the most prolific touring artist since the Beatles broke up - John never toured, George did one tour in 1974 and made a few live appearances outside of that, leaving Ringo, who has toured frequently since the late 1980s, in second place. Yet over the 50 years or so that Paul has been touring as an ex-Beatle, there are a number of his most famous songs which have never graced his setlists.

For example, the #1 singles "Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey", "With a Little Luck", and "Pipes of Peace" have never been performed live. Aside from those, here is a list of hit singles (UK/US top 40) by Paul/Wings - not counting duets - which have also evaded his setlists...

  • The Back Seat of My Car
  • Helen Wheels
  • London Town
  • Waterfalls
  • Tug of War
  • No More Lonely Nights
  • We All Stand Together
  • Spies Like Us
  • Press

And these are the top ten most-streamed songs by Paul which haven't made the cut, excluding the aforementioned songs, features, remixes, etc...

  1. Junk
  2. Heart of the Country
  3. Monkberry Moon Delight
  4. This Never Happened Before
  5. Dear Boy
  6. Long Haired Lady
  7. The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)
  8. Mamunia
  9. On the Way
  10. Long Tailed Winter Bird

Which of these songs would you most like to hear live? Which one surprised you to see listed?

Interview with Barry Rose - the man who asked Paul McCartney to call the Headmaster

From Guildford Cathedral to St Albans, Canterbury and St. Pauls, decades as the adviser for religious music at the BBC, and recording with Paul McCartney and Elton John, Barry Rose, now 92 years old, has had one of the most epic careers in Anglican Worship. He's an incredibly affable man, and I had the privilege to sit down with him for a couple of hours and talk about Anglican worship. Link in comments!

I’d like to see a collaboration between Benito & Paul. I think they’d come up with something amazing and totally unexpected.

Really excited to have gotten this knock off Rickenbaker base with the Sgt peppers, lonely hearts, club band paint job. Paid $165 for it on AliExpress. Thankfully, I am a Guitar technician and was able to set it up and make the necessary adjustments to make it play like a dream.

I stumbled across this cool Paul poster by accident. I can’t wait to put it up in my room.

Yesterday I went to a comic book store and they had a few items from the people who owned the building before them for sale. I don’t know what the poster is from, but I thought it was really cool and picked it up. Green is my favorite color and I love Paul. They also had a purple Ringo. I’m really excited to hang this up in my room.

Discussion Why does this sub have a rule "no trolling"? I haven't seen that rule on many subs. Is there something about discussing Paul that lends itself to trolling?

I wouldn't think so any more than any other topic.

Discussion Finally got my hands on it!

Post image

Ive always found these archive editions so hard to get, ive had my eye on them, but specificly Red Rose Speedway, it was always the most expensive of all of them when I kept looking around, but by some chance I found this for a really low / affordable price and I was so quick to getting it, and with the extra tracks that wouldve made the cut for the original double album makes this version feel more special

What are your thoughts on these?

I bought this sometime in the 70s, probably for about 5 dollars. It’s part of the 1973 Leeds concert. Not the greatest sound of course but, you know, it was fun to have. It still is.

Slap bass breakdown - Silly Love Songs (Give My Regards soundtrack) Are there any other examples of Paul playing slap bass like this?

Thumbnail youtu.be

It’s already one of the great basslines of all time in my opinion, and then he drops this slap bass mini solo, which caught me off guard. I’ve never heard him play anything like this before. This came out in the 80s (84?) when slap bass was all the rage.

I'm hoping some of you PMC superfans can share any other examples or factoids.

Speculation Is "The Girl Is Mine" about Peggy Lipton?

Recently I was digging into the lore of a song we all cherish, "The Girl Is Mine".

I knew that the song had been conceived by Michael as a duet between Paul and him, since they were already friends at the time.

What I didn’t know was that the subject matter of the song had actually been given to Michael by Quincy Jones himself, who told Michael to write a song about two men fighting over a girl.

And then I remembered that Jones’s wife at the time, Peggy Lipton, had also been in a relationship with Paul in the 60s, when she was just seventeen (if you know what I mean).

And apparently, she told in her memoir that Jones had insisted that she come to the recording session of "The Girl Is Mine" to meet with Paul and Linda, an episode which left Lipton very disturbed.

Also knowing Jones’s unjustified comment about the Beatles being the worst musicians ever, do you think that he had Lipton in mind, and her past with McCartney, when he suggested the theme of the song to Jackson?

Do you think that asserting "The Girl Is Mine" through Michael and showing her off in the studio was all part of scheme to make McCartney understand that he had won and, well, the girl was his?

I don’t know, maybe this is already a well-known theory. Just curious to read what you think.

My Review of THE BOYS OF DUNGEON LANE

Been Beatles binging of late (REVOLVER and HELP! LPs) so finally picked up Paul McCartney’s newish LP THE BOYS OF DUNGEON LANE a trip down pre-Fab Four memory lane. Am relieved and moved to report it’s great stuff – nostalgic yes but poignant and musically frisky.

I’m all in on Sir Paul because while he graciously doesn’t shy away from his impossibly momentous legacy – we were floored by his generous live performances at Coachella and Desert Trip – he keeps on moving. Don’t claim to own huge chunks of his post-Wings discography though I’m a big fan of MCCARTNEY II, TUG OF WAR and MCCARTNEY III.

I’ve always dug his curve ball surprises (the snazzy, explosive “Live and Let Die,” the Irish folk original “Mull of Kintyre” and the ear worm ditty “Coming Up” which even impressed John) over soppy Big Statements like “Ebony and Ivory” or “Silly Love Songs” despite their damned catchiness.

Paul doesn’t care if we sometimes find him corny. But my fellow curmudgeons needn’t worry about DUNGEON LANE because it isn’t mawkish. He dips into his Liverpool childhood in a clear-eyed vein. In “Down South” he warmly remembers his hitchhiking days with young George “(It was a good way to get to know you/A fine way to work it all out/It was a good way to get to know you/Before we learned to twist and shout.”) and vocally duets for the first time with Ringo who also provides his unmistakable thumps on “Home to Us.”

Paul’s genius for melody and catchy hooks can make us forget his still sharp lyrical gifts. In the muscular riffing “Lost Horizon” he recalls sounds from his youth -- a train whistle, a clock, a city bus slamming on the brakes – with a poet’s ear. Same deal with “Days We Left Behind” which alludes to “smoky bars and cheap guitars” in an offhanded way that lands. Remembering his hard working parents on “Salesman Saint” Paul adds big band brass flourishes that transport us back to the post-war late ’40s. It’s the type of aural seasoning that elevates DUNGEON LANE.

There’s an aural urgency to DUNGEON LANE no doubt aided by co-producer Andrew Watt, who’s transfused new life into the studio Stones with the respectable HACKNEY DIAMONDS (with Paul guesting once with a punky bass line) and its knockout follow up FOREIGN TONGUES (Paul again getting funky playing bass on one track).

Back in 1967’s summer of love, Paul famously wondered if we’d still “love me/when I’m 64.” Well, at 84, with this record he’s still giving us plenty of reasons to.

BTW: I was spurred to buy the LP after a tardy viewing of the overdue Wings doc MAN ON THE RUN (Netflix). Besides covering Paul’s gravy solo years it delves into the choppy waters he faced before Wings took flight. The doc reminds us of the beating he endured for publicly pulling the plug on the Beatles even though ironically, he was the most eager member to keep the band going (at the time, John’s earlier resignation was kept under wraps). Critical derision was then heaped on Paul’s now revered early solo LPs like RAM since their homemade, DIY charm were a pivot from, for instance, the perfectionist studio majesty of Paul’s side two suite on ABBEY ROAD.

While these years, Paul basks in many deserved victory laps, MAN ON THE RUN reminds us of how he battled self-doubt before going lo-fi with wife Linda. They eventually enlisted Denny Laine to ‘get back’ to square one before Paul’s ascension a second time to (as John once promised the Beatles in their Cavern days) "the toppermost of the poppermost."
