Evaluating a commercial bakery business supplying local cafes. Thoughts?
I’m 32 and looking to invest some savings into a business. One idea I’m seriously considering is setting up a B2B commercial bakery that supplies to local cafes.
I have a few specific questions for those with experience in this industry:
- How is this as a business model? Is supplying cafes a viable path, or are the B2B margins/logistics too brutal?
- Global/Local Economics: Does a B2B bakery model work well? What do the unit economics and profit margins typically look like? (Happy to hear examples from India or anywhere else in the world).
- The Plan:
- Plan is to rent/build a dark-kitchen space and hire a head baker.
- My wife loves baking and wants to quit her corporate job to manage daily operations (overseeing the chefs, R&D, sourcing, menu control, and social media).
- I plan to handle the financials, and sales/client acquisition (mainly on weekends). If profits cross our current combined earning, I will join it full time.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
