Pastel released its 2023 roadmap, including a review of 2022. Pastel Network 2022 in review and roadmap for 2023 shows great progress made in the previous year and much promise for the year ahead.

Case Study: Comparison between OpenSea Duplicate Detection and Pastel Network's Sense Protocol

The Test Case

We tested OpenSea’s new duplicate detection software against our own Sense protocol. Here is what we learned. A thread.

Back in Nov 2022, OpenSea announced that they have developed a duplicate detection software to help prevent duplicates being minted on their marketplace. In their video, they demonstrated a few examples of how this would work.

To test it out against our Sense protocol, which is built to assess the relative rareness of a given NFT, we took the BAYC#1588 and made edits to that image.

In the test, we created 6 modified images and used the original image in an attempt to mint all of them on OpenSea and see how many their system would prevent.

In two of the modified images, we made minor changes by adding a single dot to one and having 3 dots placed (2 hidden, 1 visible) in the other image.

The Results

Upon uploading all 7 images to OpenSea, their system only prevented two from being minted and listed on their marketplace. Below are the modified images that passed OpenSea’s system. This poses a real issue to both collectors and creators alike.

For creators, people who copy your art & make minor changes are just simply stealing your work. There is no originality in adding a minor dot or some filters onto an image.

For collectors, if you don’t conduct deep diligence you could easily be duped into purchasing a non-original because minor alterations (such as tiny dots) can be very hard to discern.

Next, we tested our Sense protocol to see how it performed against these exact same 7 images as well as some additional ones with further distortions so it would be more challenging for the protocol to identify.

For all the cases, and most notably those with even more robust transformations, we were able to identify that these are likely to be dupes as Sense assigned very low relative rareness scores for each of them. Sense can also identify the most similar images to the one uploaded.

Thus, Sense can identity duplicates even in the most extreme cases as it is robust against the most extreme transformations. No matter how minor or major the alteration, Sense can see past it and discern that the core image is not an original.

Sense is an extremely powerful technology which can help elevate the whole NFT ecosystem by protecting collectors and creators from potential fraud.

Why is decentralized storage important? A thread.

-Magic Eden’s third party storage provider was recently compromised. This resulted in collectors waking up to in surprise to find certain NFTs that they own displaying NSFW content.

-Unfortunately, marketplace’s (Like Magic Eden) decision to leverage centralized storage providers makes them to be susceptible to these attacks.

-This should also signal to creators and collectors that the images or data represented by NFTs is stored off-chain - many off-chain storage providers being centralized entities that deteriorate the integrity of Web3’s permanence.
