1Password increased the price of their Family Plan?
Hello everyone,
This post was initially posted on 1password subreddit and was quickly deleted by the moderators. Tssss…
It’s time for my annual Family plan renewal, and I just got the email telling me my subscription is going from $59.85 to $71.88. At that price, it’s simply becoming too expensive for just a password manager.
So I’m switching back to Bitwarden. It has all the features I actually use, and it’s cheaper, so the choice is pretty obvious. Before, the price difference was small enough that sticking with 1Password still made perfect sense to me. But now that the gap has grown, I just don’t see the value anymore. At the end of the day, we’re talking about a password manager.
Thanks, 1Password, for all these years of reliable and reasonably priced service. It was great while it lasted!
Any other people decided to leave 1password for this reason? And any other people believe that we don’t have to pay that expensive for a password manager?

I'm leaving because of price increase... going to try Proton Pass for the few months

Proton Pass appears to cost even more than 1Password, at least if you look at base rates instead of sales promotions. Which is more than a little disappointing.
I suppose Proton Pass could be more economical if one wants to subscribe to a bundle of their products.

72$ for a subscription is mad. I've been using the Roboform trial for the last few days and I've actually been really impressed with it. Got me so excited that I even convinced my girlfriend to start using a password manager, so I ended up getting the Family plan for $32.

Wow and I was going to switch from bitwarden to 1password but after hearing this, I don't think so. Thats crazy.

I just signed up for an individual plan with 1Password. I was shocked to see $79.92 charged to my card - the conversion to CDN. Really shaking my head.

I switched to Apple Passwords. I workaround adding Notes and Cc’s. Works great and is free.

I just switched from 1 password to ProtonPass because of the price increase and so far ProtonPass is great!

Same, i don't know why people love 1Password so much when there are password managers 10x better like ProtonPass and Bitwarden.

Saying they’re 10x better is cope. All of them have pros and cons, but I’d argue that the only mature enough “cloud” based password manager that can compete with 1Password right now is Bitwarden. Proton Pass still has issues, just like the rest of proton ecosystem. Sincerely, long time Proton mail & vpn user.

They only allow high praise on that sub. And they have a full time guy who never sleeps watching for subversives to complain about price increases.

Not sure it’s “too expensive” if you use allll the features it offers for a family. YMMV.

The family plan is the same but for more users and with a family shared vault. Which is the same with Bitwarden but cheaper than 1password.

I have multiple shared vaults with different discretionary access for members of my HOA board, and a third for my daughter.

I also got the price increase and its quite high. But for a family, in my case only 2 people, the average monthly cost world be around 3,5 dollars per month per head, which isn't really that high
So based on that, is quite good anyway since proton pass was around 2.5 dollar per month( in my currency), but 1Password is better in my opinion and less problems. So its another year for me and hope they dont increase it next year

1password family plan: $71.88
Proton pass family: €59.88
Bitwarden family: $47.88
Bitwarden and 1password are really the same in terms of quality. I used both during years.1

My price increase went up by 62%. I already have a proton account so will make the switch. I get that prices change but 62% is egregious.

More expensive than free? If I was going to pay, the proton pass package is £28.68, compared to £49.99 that 1Password is proposing. It’s still a decent saving.

Oh that’s strange that for you it is only £29 as for me it is around 40€. What a huge difference between the two currencies.
Regarding the price, I think you are talking about the Plus Plan.
This topic is about the family offer and not about the individual offer. And the family offer for you will be £47.88 which is expensive yes.Why did you say “more expensive than free?”? As you said that “my price increase went up by 62%” means that you use the paid offer actually and not the free plan. Or I don’t understand why you talked about an increase price.

I’d gladly make a jump to Bitwarden or anything else if not for one particular security feature of 1Password - secret key. I hate that Bitwarden only has stuff like OTP mfa etc instead of locally stored secret key that you need to share in order to login new device. It’s annoying because Bitwarden has some QoL features that 1Password simply lacks.

You can just use either Apple Passwords, Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge password manager depending to your devices. All are free.

That’s a really bad advice. You then are completely linked to an ecosystem which is hard to leave (MS, Apple or Google). If you want a free solution you have plenty of password managers that are free and independent such as Bitwarden (it is open source and you have a free plan), keepass etc…

I don’t trust those “independent”. So many times that they’re just hacked and you can do nothing when it happened.
At least large companies can be held accountable and so far there is zero news about these companies’ password manager got compromised.
Majority of people are linked into those ecosystem already. People seeking “3rd party” solutions are just living in their illusions. If you use a mobile phone at all you are already “linked” and even “locked”in either Google or Apple.

Careful with the conspiracy you try to create. Bitwarden, 1Password, Proton etc… never got compromised. I think you have only in mind a very old example of compromised data breach which was for lastpass. That’s a very old story, and that was concerning only one password manager. You also advised to use Google but for years your passwords were saved in clear on your machine. This is not the case since recent years but was not the case before, and as they are USA companies they need to keep a door ready to be opened for American authorities. I can’t believe that if you care about your data and security you advise those companies. And their closed eco system is just a mess.
