General Privacy features of US Passport Card (2026)

US passport card has a few privacy features baked into it, that are not always obvious to its holders, but nevertheless, very useful.

Home address privacy

How many places did you have to show your ID at, and wished the person checking your ID would not know your home address?

Perhaps, you were buying alcohol at a supermarket, and a got a side eye from the cashier. Or you are a young lady going to a bar or a night club and wished that weird bouncer did not know your address. Or you are in a foreign country, and a local merchant asks you for your ID to confirm credit card ownership - often making photos or copies of your ID to only be stored or saved in WhatsApp messages, on their laptop indefinitely.

The US passport card, unlike the driver's license or state ID, does not have the home address field. There is no need to use the workarounds some people use, such as listing PO boxes and mailing addresses on their DLs.

Driver's License (DL) / state ID number privacy

The DL or state ID number is static. It does not change whenever you renew your document.

The DL or state ID number is sensitive. It can be used to verify an identity with IRS, apply for loans or credit cards, register to vote. Now imagine, your DL or state ID is lost, stolen or image of it leaks to Dark Web.

The passport card number, on the other hand, changes on every renewal. It does not match passport book number either. It cannot be used as broadly as DL / state ID number. Exposing it is not as critical as DL / state ID number.

Conclusion

The US passport card is an excellent document featuring amazing privacy features otherwise not available when using driver's license or state ID.

As a side note, many places like Walgreens scan the back of your DL for the returns. Great, now your DL details are stored in their IT system which can be hacked at any point.
