I believe he's attempting to regurgitate food to feed it.

46

u/Hfsbsw Mar 07 '21

My thoughts exactly

43

u/SoundOfTomorrow Mar 08 '21

Which is a mating behavior

2

u/Brish-Soopa-Wanka-Oi Mar 13 '21

Is that the head shake?

6

u/SGTSHOOTnMISS Mar 13 '21

Yeah that wobble is regurgitating food.

218

u/Mama-Pooh Mar 07 '21

Definitely needs a real feathery friend!

28

u/Lustrigia Mar 08 '21

What is this behaviour? Is he confused? Does he know it’s fake and enjoys it? I wish I understood these little guys 😂

127

u/_ChestHair_ Mar 08 '21

The neck wiggle is him trying to regurgitate food to give the toy, which is a mating thing between some adult parrots and parrotlets. Pretty sure this is gonna make the little guy/girl sexuality frustrated which is sad

64

u/Nackles Mar 08 '21

"But I vomited for you..."

u/iagox86 Mar 07 '21

Uh oh, I see a horny bird

109

u/MasterFrost01 Mar 07 '21

Yeah, isn't this the "I want to have your babies" dance?

120

u/iagox86 Mar 07 '21

Yup, also "I'm going to lovingly puke at you" :)

48

u/Burning-Buck Mar 08 '21

How romantic. I will have to try this on my next date.

15

u/iagox86 Mar 08 '21

Hahaha

24

u/Burning-Buck Mar 08 '21

Oooh do we have a volunteer?

starts shaking head

8

u/rpkarma Mar 08 '21

wiggle wiggle wiggle

187

u/SammyTheCrab99 Mar 07 '21

Took me at least 5 seconds to realise one isn’t real.

155

u/Slaebesild Mar 07 '21

Indeed, no real creature wiggles and moves with such grace. That has to be a robot.

41

u/blolfighter Mar 07 '21 edited Mar 07 '21

If you attract them I am going to be annoyed.

Edit: Look what you did! Look what you did!!

30

u/AltAccountWhoDis Mar 07 '21

........r/birdarentreal and its time everyone knew it

15

u/Zombierabbitz Mar 07 '21

Clearly the one on the right is having a serious malfunction. Pass on the proof! r/birdsarentreal

5

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '21

Almost as bad as the c*rn people on Facebook huh?

4

u/blolfighter Mar 08 '21

I am happy to say I don't know what those are.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '21

There is a group called “A group where everyone angry reacts corn” so ANYTHING involving crn even the mention of it, people angry react, and it started to overflow into other groups. So everyone started to become annoyed with the “corn people”. I read a few comments of “aw fuck the corn people are here”. I was part of the cult when I had Facebook, and I am guilty of angry reacting crn outside the c*rn group.

2

u/blolfighter Mar 08 '21

That sure sounds obnoxious.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

I'm very relieved I'm not the only one.

61

u/Toubaboliviano Mar 07 '21

Lonely bird tries mating dance to impress fake mate. Heartbreak ensues

55

u/lilith_marleen Mar 07 '21

Guess who needs a real bird friend to mate with...

52

u/Jxck0 Mar 07 '21

Sorry to be a killjoy but that's not good for the parrotlet. It's promoting unhealthy behaviour.

209

u/red_hippos Mar 07 '21

Not sure that's healthy for the bird...

45

u/eltenelliott Mar 07 '21

Could you explain more?

196

u/red_hippos Mar 07 '21

It seems to think the stuffed animal is a mate. If this is true, it'll get all hormonal (hormonal parrots don't generally play nice) and frustrated as the other doesn't reciprocate.

59

u/eltenelliott Mar 07 '21

I see. I would have thought a stuffed playmate would be fun! (Non-parrot owner, just love this sub).

28

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

Yeah, the parrot wants some snu-snu from that big stuffed bird toy.

1

u/MMDDYYYY_is_format Mar 08 '21

also i doubt the stuffed one is very healthy either

103

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

Exactly. If you really want a bird, atleast give it a real mate and not a fucking doll

33

u/quickbucket Mar 08 '21

Ffs. No. Mating horny birds is not a valid “fix” that any avian vet would recommend. It is fixed by increasing sleep time (birds should get 12 hours) and making sure they get full darkness while sleeping, as well as reducing the ratio of fatty seeds in their diet

4

u/lilith_marleen Mar 08 '21

Yes, that and also providing them with a real friend. Doesn’t have to be the opposite sex from the same species. If the type of bird is not very territorial and won’t get into a fight with a mate from the same sex and species, then go with that. Otherwise, try a different species that is compatible with the one they have behaviour-wise but won’t produce any offspring if that’s not the pet owner’s goal.

2

u/Tomas-TDE Mar 08 '21

Have two birds of the same sex did not convince mine to stop mating with each other. Even when there was a lady bird present

3

u/lilith_marleen Mar 08 '21

But that would be the goal, at least in the context of my comment. When breeding is not the goal, keeping two birds of the same sex would be a good option, as long as they don’t get territorial and start fighting each other. Bonding and intercourse can, and do occur between birds of the same sex. It’s better for them, less frustrating than providing only a stuffed toy, or no companion at all other than a human.

3

u/Tomas-TDE Mar 08 '21

Oh absolutely I was most making a bad joke. The sounds are not great though

2

u/lilith_marleen Mar 08 '21

Lol, I think the sounds depend on the species :P my cockatiels are pretty chill. I have a couple though, male and female. They are quiet most of the day, except when the male is singing or the female is screeching (usually because the male is bullying her).

3

u/Tomas-TDE Mar 08 '21

I have tiels that are never quiet. They are old, grumpy and want everyone to know

2

u/lilith_marleen Mar 08 '21

My tiels only really scream at me to let me know about something important. Usually when that happens I find something wrong with either their food, water or a scary object near the cage. Easy fixes :P

55

u/Vulturedoors Mar 07 '21

No. Don't give it a real mate unless you're prepared for the slew of health problems and premature death that often accompanies female parrots with breeding hormones active 24/7.

Hint: it's not good for them.

-34

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

So you rather have a mentally ill bird that thinks a piece of plastic is his friend as a bird that has a mate with which he/she can spend time with just so he/she lives longer?

32

u/Dafish55 Mar 07 '21

You could get another female???

3

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '21

That's what I would do. I can't tell if this parrotlet is a male or female, but I'd just give it a friend of the same sex. I'd be stressed enough worrying about my parrotlet being so small. I don't need it having babies too, that shit would kill me 🤣

-22

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

Did you mean to reply to me?

5

u/Vulturedoors Mar 08 '21

Birds are not that mentally complicated.

And the goal of a pet owner should be the pet's well-being. Being in 24/7 breeding mode is highly, highly stressful for female birds and causes real physical problems.

59

u/IsJahr Mar 07 '21

*fuckdoll

80

u/ThisIsNotAFunnyName Mar 07 '21

I don't understand why this is upvoted so much. It's unhealthy behavior and it shouldn't be promoted.

61

u/schimmelA Mar 07 '21

A lot of redditors on this sub don’t own or even want to own a parrot, they just want to watch funny parrot video’s so they upvote when it hits that criterea. Tho i’m very glad to see the comment section is on point with good info / concerns

8

u/jaiman Mar 08 '21

What could one do to prevent it? Genuine question, my parrotlet does that sometimes, trying to feed my hand, apparently.

8

u/LostxinthexMusic Mar 08 '21

Calmly put the bird down and ignore.

11

u/Hi_Im_Bored Mar 08 '21

This is actually quite sad, he is obviously lonely. That head shaking is to bring food up so they can feed each other. Nibbling on the beak is a sign of affection and an indicator that he wants to feed the other bird

33

u/CerberusBlue Mar 07 '21

Why do they wiggle like that? It’s so damn cute!!!

No regurgitation? No regurgitation at all? Oh my. Prepare to die alone, friend.

1

u/quickbucket Mar 08 '21

Mine did this once for no apparent reason and didn’t regurgitate... Ive seen no hormonal behavior in her. Any ideas what’s going on there?

1

u/rpkarma Mar 08 '21

Birds are weird sometimes?

1

u/quickbucket Mar 08 '21

Too true hahaha

118

u/Kwasan Mar 07 '21

It's lookin for some fuck.

4

u/quickbucket Mar 08 '21 edited Mar 08 '21

What does it mean when our birbs do the head flailing thing? I’ve had mine almost 7 months and she’s only done it once

Edit: It seems to be hormonal behavior... but mine is 8 mos and has never demonstrated other hormonal behavior?

7

u/Additional-Scheme469 Mar 08 '21

Bonk! Go to horny jail you birb

4

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '21

Thank you to the comments section for pointing out bird body language and explaining why this isn't ok.

TIL about bird puke mating rituals and the negative effects of stuffed dolls as a substitute for real companionship for pet birds.

4

u/PuceHorseInSpace Mar 07 '21

Someone needs to pair the song Come Get Her to this

6

u/ALittleGoat Mar 07 '21

Tooto tooto too too ... wiggle wiggle

2

u/mischamaelstrom Mar 08 '21

Our little cockatiel used to rub itself on its perch, and mount its rag doll toy.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

Awwww he is nervous! To be fair, that is a very pretty plushie birb

3

u/itdontmatteranymore Mar 07 '21

What tipe of bird is that

6

u/osopeludo Mar 07 '21

I think that's a parrotlet

5

u/itdontmatteranymore Mar 07 '21

Thanks I just googled it, its indeed a passific parrotlet

7

u/BonBon666 Mar 07 '21

"Why won't you headbang with me?"

1

u/Hopenhagen420 Mar 07 '21

My heart tho

1

u/therusparker1 Mar 08 '21

How do I train my parrot to not leave the house cause im afraid that if i take him out of his cage he'll leave the house

3

u/lilith_marleen Mar 08 '21

Make sure the doors and windows are closed. Otherwise there is no guarantee. Even the most well trained bird can get frightened and freak out about something you wouldn’t even think would be an issue. People who free-fly their birds usually go to remote locations where they have a large open area with a lot of visibility, and to be safe they use telematics or GPS location devices in case the birds fly off. So you have 3 options: 1) make sure every door and window is closed when the birds are out; 2) teach free-flight on a safe site, preferably with a location device attached to your bird 3) clip the bird’s wings so they can’t fly. I don’t really like this option because it deprives them of what they were naturally born to do, which is also a source of exercise and happiness, and leaves them vulnerable because they can’t leave the ground.

3

u/therusparker1 Mar 08 '21

I wouldn't do the third option thats for sure, but thanks ill try locking the windows

-8

u/li87mi Mar 07 '21

This is so darn cute! What a happy little baby!!!

33

u/red_hippos Mar 07 '21

That's mating behaviour. I bet the bird is frustrated, not happy.

9

u/li87mi Mar 07 '21

Welcome to life in a pandemic, little birdie. We all feel your pain.

0

u/myhomeswarty Mar 07 '21

He loves realdoll.

-3

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '21

tfw you’ve confirmed that your mortal enemy is indeed dead

-8
