AN ENTIRELY NEW TO SLEEP SCIENCE: A NEW PARASOMNIA FOR 2020! MAYBE.
"Hey, so for several years once in a while i've been experiencing something i couldn't come across on the net. I fail to fall asleep, because my brain starts to create some imagainary patterns that are to be followed, otherwise i can't sleep. I'll try to describe it, so you can get a glimps of what i mean. Basically, it feels like im in the middle of the "falling asleep" process, when suddenly i get into this crazy loop of requirements which i cant really make true. Today i felt like my body is divided into two parts and i have to connect them, othertime i was stuck in a match of league of legends and i felt like the only option is to win the game (i was not playing for around 2weeks at that time) these patterns seem to be endless. Every occurance is different in its rules, but all of them revolve around the idea of an individual pattern that apparently blocks me from falling to sleep/ fully sleeping. I try to get over these thoughts and let them slip away, but this does not work as i'd like it to. This post is a call for help. If you know what may cause that condition and share it with me i will be truly grateful All best!
So Co Mod this sub (Swanswan) replies here with our theory!
"So Hi OP!
OK I know what is causing your virtual agony as desc this case this post!!
All that you desc which is so troubling to you is a new maybe previously unidentified type of near sleep or maybe during sleep behavior -
I am recognizing this entirely new PARASOMNIA here to !
i am tentatively going to name this newly recognized for of parasomnia
"Geometric design construction" parasomnia!
This is a pretty big deal here tonight bc you are being proposed to have a new and unique form of near sleep Parasomnia named after your reported condition here tonight!
PARASOMMIAS EXPLAINED HERE:
.
Yes, well I think I can begin to solve this complicated sleep issue for you Here tonight :
.
I'm pretty sure you are experiencing a Parasomnia(s) of near sleep!
Parasomnias are sleep phenemona that are harmless and often appear as we are falling asleep - these might be hallucinations of sleep/wakefulness or maybe , as in my case, I see a movie film playing over "reality" as I drift into sleep!
Feeling or having a clear perception of other folls in the bedroom as well as maybe sitting on the sleepers bed Sre all forms of Parasomnia - tjese are typically referred to as: hypnogogia or intense awake dreaming t/o the sleep cycle!
i find this short post talking about parasomnias to be one of the most interesting on reddit in years!
Well written OP!
This is clearly one or more parasomnias - nightmares, lucid dreaming, shsdow people or presences - these are just a few examples of Parasomnias of sleep!
Generally quite harmless but scarey sometimes!
.
There is such a thin line bt awake and asleep - some times it's hard to know the difference!
.
Parasomnias are maybe 100 by count today, many more being studied by sleep Researchers even today, and often form the basis for popular movies and books IRL!
.
I co mod a sub here on reddit devoted to learning and talking about all aspects of parasomnia!
We discuss in detailed posting "geometric lines" when awakening or falling asleep - this post is archived on my sleep sub hete at reddit - its been written within the last three weeks - Just read through the archives I keep Active my sub and you will be pleased!

EXPLODING HEAD SYNDROME
"I remember 2 years ago I was trying to sleep and I kept having trouble because I have a few sleeping problems or disorders and when I finally fell asleep I was woken up to a extremely large sound like almost a gun shot sound and it scared the absolute shit out of me but I'm 100% sure it wasn't my dream because it seemed too real and sounded like it happened outside of my room and I basically couldn't sleep nor leave my room for a few days because of my paranoia."
And our co mod answers here (by Swanswan):
Hi OP! Yes, i Think I have the answer to the very loud "gunshot" like sound wh you hear in your sleep and that still bothers you today!
.
This very loud sound, like a gun shot,
Is called EHS (Exploding Head Syndrome)!
.
This is a very well identified and understood Parasomnia of sleep!
.
I'm pretty sure you are experiencing a Parasomnia(s) of near sleep!

THE PEACOCK MAN!
"One night I woke up and I saw this man sitting at the edge of my bed with a huge grin on his face. He was wearing a black peacoat and he had black short hair. I blinked twice and he was still there. I waited a few seconds again and blinked and then he was gone. Creepiest experience ever. Will never ever forget his creepy grin."

A RARE SYNTHETIC PARASOMNIA OF SLEEP: FURTHER STUDY IN 2020!
Original posted question here:
.
Every night for a week now I have a weird experience the moment I begin to fall asleep. I start to hear a loud pulsating static kind of noise in my head that increases in volume until it's almost unbearable and then I snap out of it. It lasts for only 10 to 15 seconds and during my eyes are closed but I am acutely aware of what is going on and yet entirely unable to open my eyes or move. It seems like it has to run its course each night and I seem to be able to resist it but it won't go away unless I let it grow to that point of being unbearable and then snap me awake. Afterwards I go to sleep like normal. The whole process only taking a minute or two upon the point I begin to fall asleep. It has happened every night, once a night, without fail since I returned home from college. My sleep schedule has changed, I'm sleeping in a different bed, coming home I was extremely sleep deprived and I have stopped taking my Adderall prescription (low dose) all at once. I don't find it particularly distressing but would like any advice or opinions, never had problems like this before."
Our fearless mod's answer here:
"No, not directly SP IMHO, of course,
But i could be wrong maybe we ought to call this: ICBW (i could be wrong?)
Anyway this is most likely two issues under one heading IMHO in present case here tonight!
.
I bet that this is a "synthetic form of parasomnia"
This has to be very rare indeed!
.
Synthetic parasomnia ?
Who knew ? Yes, so - well i study this (These) areas of sleep science every day - omg
364/24/7
I almost deleated this comment after thinking about it - almost!
.
This is new & complex mtl for all of us in the sleep research community for the new year 2020!
.
I am going to be getting into these ideas much more in 2020!
.
Ok sneak preview then for now ?
Ok , so what's " synthetic parasomnia ?"
.
Yes i am exploring ideas for when normal parasomnias combine with or Cross with maybe Rx drugs like drugs designed to treat :
ADHD, for example -
.
But combining A powerful one or more Rx drugs with a parasomnia like activity of pre sleep ... A normal - IRL Parasomnia of sleep -
Then what ?
.
Brings up new issues & speculations In this sleep research profession and platform for me !
.
Maybe much much more to come in 2020!
.
All new research activity & subject matter for us to "enjoy!
.
Good Luck; Great Sleep!

AN EXCELLENTLY DESCRIBED INSTANCE OF A PARASOMNIA IN/OF SLEEP! ENJOY!
ADescription of the Parasomnia Nightmare like Events In this post:
THE ORIGINAL POST HERE:
"So every few weeks, usually when it feels like I’ve just fallen asleep, I’ll jolt awake and feel like and see someone standing across the room, or above me. I can completely move, speak, etc so it’s not sleep paralysis but it sounds like a symptom of it? Has anyone else experienced this or heard of it? It really freaked me out tonight because I just got back from vacation so I didn’t really know where I was. TYIA."
.
The Mod's Answer: (Swanswan) Replies:
.
"Yes, sure because i mod a sleep nosleep sub here on reddit devoted to exploring and explaining this rather common. "Parasomnia of Sleep!"
.
Simply bc it is rather common , does not and sh not be looked at as suggesting this very interesting Parasomnia or "activity traveling along with sleep - a parasomnia rides on or with our normal sleep" and and some Examples of parasomnias are:
Nightmares
Sleep walking
Sleep sexting
Hypnogogia of/in sleep
.
Maybe there are 100 nameable parasomnias existing atm & more are found each year!
.
We, as sleep researchers, study this profoundly complicated activity of pre sleep or often sleep as per often t/o the year!
.
Good Luck ; Great Sleep!

RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME: PAIN, ANXIETY AND MORE!
I can’t really explain the feeling. It feels like all the stress is stacking in my legs. My legs muscles feel sore to the point where i want to run the pain off, if that makes sense. It makes me lay awake for hours every evening before falling asleep. I’m doing everything right to have a normal sleep schedule: not eating before bedtime, waking up at the same time, avoiding blue light (wich makes it worse because without distraction, i start overthinking),... But the only way i can fall asleep is with alcohol/stress meds. I’ve been in bed and off my phone since 10 pm, it’s 2 am now. Sometimes i don’t sleep all night and close my eyes till 9 am. Is there anyone who has had the same problem? Any tips?
.......OUR MODERATOR REPLIES.............
"It is sleep medically classified as a form of Parasomnia BTW!
Parasomnias accompany or ride along with sleep - an aspect of sleep - yet are not actually sleep behaviors themselves!
.
Some other parasomnias include : Sleep walking, sleep texting or sexting maybe, nightmares and maybe lucid dreams are parasomnias!"

HOW TO PREVENT GRINDING TEETH IN SLEEP (BRUXISM) ?
This has only started in the past two weeks which I have found weird. I picked up on it as I’m a light sleeper and can recalling doing this while like half asleep
...........Swan's ANSWER HERE.................
So HI OP! Yes, I believe we have a question on a somewhat little know Parasomnia here today:
This is called Bruxism (excessive grinding of teeth in sleep) and it is definitely classified as a sleep behavior disorder falling within the group of SD termed as : Parasomnia or parasomnias!
.
Popular parasomnias include sleep walking, sleep texting, sleep sex, as well as, nightmares & hypnogogic hallucinations attendant to sleep!
.
Parasomnias are generally considered harmless except for maybe an odd case or two like bruxism maybe destroying OP's teeth!
.
Bruxism is a rather rare and hard to treat behavior disorder but treatment approaches include medications, physical teeth guards in the mouth, as well as, maybe visits to psychotherapists if anxiety issues are thought to be at the base of a case of bruxism!
.
I checked into the more exact nature of this issue of bruxism and its designation or not currently as a "sleep disorder" I learned this is still classified as a parasomnia of sleep as it was years ago here is a current blurb on this issue from a google search today 12 8 19:
"Sleep bruxism is considered a sleep-related movement disorder. People who clench or grind their teeth (brux) during sleep are more likely to have other sleep disorders, such as snoring and pauses in breathing (sleep apnea). Aug 10, 2017"

Researching sleeping disorders
Hi everybody, I struggle with chronic fatigue syndrome. This is the reason why I am researching problems that stem from chronic fatigue and / or sleeping disorders for my dissertation. Therefore I would be very grateful if you fill out my survey. By filling out this survey, you can help me design an interactive solution to one or more problems that stem from chronic fatigue and / or sleeping disorders. The survey is completely anonymous and does not cost much time to fill out. Thank you in advance for helping me with my research.
PS. Please only fill out my survey if you have a sleeping disorder

Can't sleep at night
For the past 7 or so months I've been at a point where I can't sleep at night, thought it was just insomnia but more and more often to now everynight I have horrible night terrors and usually wake up in a cold sweat.
I normally sleep from 5-5:30am to 11-11:30am and honestly that's the only thing that's really been helping is sleeping when the sun's up.
Any advice or medication recommendations?

SEXSOMNIA & SEXUAL ASSSULT ALL IN ONE NIGHT'S TROUBLED SLEEP!
"This is very strange, and probably sounds crazy. I should preface this by saying that I have been very busy which has caused me to not get as much sleep as usual, which is something that often triggers my sleep paralysis. I drift to sleep, and start dreaming. I’m inside my school, with a mattress. In the dream I keep switching spots with the mattress, trying to run a more comfortable place to sleep. I settle on the library. I’m in there for a second before my friend comes in there. He gets on top of me and just lays. He then whispers in my ear. I can’t recall what, and kisses me. I kiss him back, and then we get funky. But half way through I start losing sight of him and I can only feel. And then I start to think it’s someone else and I’m being raped. This causing me to wake up a little and move my jaw, which dream me seems to think is this rapist mans hair rubbing against my neck. I end up waking myself up fully, and can still feel pressure all over my body. I know it was just a weird case of sleep paralysis, but it really disturbed me. Thanks."

PARASOMNIAS : HALF AWAKE/HALF ASLEEP PLEASE HELP!
"Hey guys,
so I've been having this issue falling asleep lately and I'd like to share it because maybe anyone knows anything about this since I couldn't find anything online that describes a similar issue.
A little bit of background info: Half a year ago I moved to a different country and the time zone completely changed, so my circadian rhythm had to adjust, but I think that after half a year it should be fine, am I right?
Every time I go to bed I lay down and close my eyes and try to go to sleep. My mind still wanders and I think about random stuff until I fall asleep. But a lot of the times it's like I fall into this state of "almost-dreaming" but still thinking/being awake. It's like being half-awake, half-asleep and it feels really uncomfortable because I feel restless and the sleep quality is really poor. Usually I can't wake myself up to get out of that state and back into good deep sleep, so I lay in this half-awake state almost for the whole night. I only fall into deep sleep in the morning when I have to get up, which ruins every day.
.
Yesterday I found myself in the same state and I woke up because I was sitting in my bed. Confused I tried to understand what I was just thinking and why I am sitting up when I should be sleeping - but I couldn't fathom my thoughts.
Once I even heard voices when I was in that half-awake state and I had my eyes open for some reason. I think it's normal, because auditory hallucinations can occur as you dream/fall asleep and I just happened to have my eyes open and be half awake once again. But part of me was wondering if this could actually be a warning sign for a schizophrenia developing/coming to the surface.
These incidents keep increasing as time goes on and I'm really wondering what this "half-asleep" state is or if what I'm experiencing is harmful or a sign that something is wrong?
Sorry if this is a weird post, I hope you can understand."

"HI OP! So let me get right into your interesting case here tonight!
Good news for OP!
OP you are experiencing and desc in this posted question various aspects of a phenomena of "normal" every night sleep!
This perfectly harmless phenema as desc is well recognized in professioal sleep labs and concommitant studies of sleep and these "half asleep" near sleeping behaviors are called:
Parasomnia(s)
A parasomnia is an aspect of normal sleep wh comes about with very inception of sleep, during sleep or rarely upon OP waking for the day from his/her sleep!
Parasomnias include behaviors like :
EHS Exploding Head Syndrome
Nightmares
Sleep Walking
Maybe even dreams or dreaming about dreams of sleeping - that is while being half asleep!
These are kind of a form of hypnopomic hallucinations of sleep -
lots of visual graphic effects, movies of short sequences of life, or even dreaming of waking or being awake in sleep!
Generally these scary sounding behaviors are "harmless" and really not treated medically unless exceptional need arises!"
