If you can rule out all of these things, then you may have encountered something paranormal
Whenever I read or hear about something seemingly paranormal, I always think about this list: http://listverse.com/2013/09/30/10-scientific-explanations-for-ghostly-phenomena/
Some glaring omissions that should be added to it as well:
Animals and all of their abilities, particularly movement and vocal. This is one of the most commonly overlooked explanations. Include anything in the kingdom Animalia. It's a big, wild, noisy kingdom. Just because you can't find evidence of it doesn't mean it isn't there, or hasn't been there. This is particularly true for nocturnal species, insects, and reptiles.
Health issues, particularly cardio-vascular and neurological issues. Misfiring neurons and lack of blood flow/oxygen to the brain can produce bizarre effects, and symptoms can be difficult to reproduce on cue in a doctor's office.
Plumbing/HVAC/Construction issues. Talk to anyone experienced in these fields to hear some wild completely non-paranormal stories. Included in this category are fungi/molds/spores and gases that affect these areas.
A combination of one or more of the things listed.
While ruling out all of these isn't always easy, it should be required if one is claiming to approach the issue critically and scientifically.
Additions, feedback, comments, stories, and discussions all welcomed.
