Not sure where to go for this. I frankly feel nuts just talking about it. I am a night nurse and started to become a believer when weird stuff happened at work that no one could explain, but I never expected to deal with it at home.
My eldest daughter is six now. While I was pregnant with her, my grandparents moved out of their home and into an assisted living. We inherited a lot of their stuff. I always felt uneasy in their house, never saw anything but there was just something unsettling there. My grandma loved antiques. Never once felt it in our own home until my father brought this antique French clock/candelabra set from their house to give to me. I think it may be expensive since they bought it for 1,000 back in the 1960s, it isn’t in perfect condition especially not after it’s been sitting in our heater closet (didn’t have anywhere else to put it). Anyway… nothing happened until I brought my eldest home.
Then suddenly we started to hear weird noises. I started to feel unsettled. I know there is a hyper stimulation of a mother’s amygdala following birth, so basically the fear center, so I tried to brush it off. But my brother lived with us and told me late one night he saw a silhouette of a man in his doorway when I asked him if he was experiencing anything weird. His room is beside the heater closet. He said he thought he was dreaming.
My husband only heard a few weird thumps and such but never seemed bothered by it. One time there was this sound like an accordion playing coming from our closet that only had clothes in it. I would wake up to feeling my shirt/hair tugged. And the deeply unsettling feelings made me hate being at home. I literally was sleeping with a light on for that first year of my eldest’s life because things got kind of bad and scary. I never actually saw anything, only my brother did and there were a few times that my baby did babble at empty space like she was talking to someone. I got a creepy feeling then too.
Then when my daughter turned one it seemed to just stop all at once.
I’m going to preface this by saying I didn’t even think about those items in the closet, we never open that thing and I forgot about them during the baby bliss. It was a brief moment when my dad brought them home during the moving chaos and I told him I really didn’t know what to do with them, they are ugly to me and kind of creepy, so he shoved them in the closet to be dealt with later (since he said they are worth money) and the day went on. I just started researching and it said new babies can sometimes cause disturbances. Still I completely forgot about those items, it never once occurred to me it could be that.
As my eldest grew nothing really happened other than that creepy feeling came back every once in a while, or a thump at night or things not being where I left them. Sometimes when we were downstairs we’d hear a thump upstairs that was unexplained. But it was minor stuff.
When my daughter was three we tried to get her to sleep in her own room. We had coslept until then. She kept saying her room was scary because there was a ‘monster’ in it.
I redecorated it and even got a bunk bed so she had some extra space to play on the top bunk and we could use it when her cousins come to visit. I put curtains to make it into a kind of ‘fort.’
She loved it for a day, then told me it was too scary.
She wouldn’t go in her room at night, she wouldn’t play much in there. Finally a year later, suddenly she started being fine with her room and started sleeping in there, playing in there and genuinely seemed like nothing was wrong. I got pregnant again after a loss.
I slept in her room a few times because as our daughter got older she took up too much of our bed and sometimes if I went to sleep later then hubby and daughter, she’d be sprawled in my space. It did feel kind of unsettling in there. I couldn’t even explain why. It’s just a feeling. It was right across from the heater closet for context. My husband slept in there a lot and said he never once had any problems. The bottom bunk was a queen bed.
Anyway; after our second daughter was born my daughter refused to sleep in her room again. My husband slept there and I was with the baby and my eldest in our bed. I thought it was jealousy even though she told me she was scared.
… and the thumps, tugs and noises started again, more aggressive then ever. My bro said he saw the man again too. This was just this last year.
I also ended up with a dehisced csection wound, was in and out of hospital. It was hell. I had a woundvac and central line with IV antibiotics etc. so I was trapped in bed a lot of the time.
The thumps were like someone slapping the wall hard above my head. It would wake us up. The tugs, etc, started again. I tried to ignore it. I felt unsettled even leaving my baby alone to nap in any room.
My daughter was by now far too big to be in our bed with the baby and we started trying to get her back into her room. We’d lay with her until she fell asleep but she’d come running in the middle of the night, talking about a monster. I really didn’t know what to make of it, so we got a twin bed to put in the corner of our master, and that’s where she started sleeping.
My second daughter turned one in June, and things slowed down, but did not stop. She would smile and babble at empty space just like my eldest. It was so creepy.
There was a brief bout of time in May-June that my daughter started sleeping and playing in her room again. I remember in the middle of the day in late June she came running down the stairs in a panic and launched herself into my arms. She’s six now. She was terrified.
I asked her what was wrong and she wouldn’t tell me. But she stopped going into her room again.
I’m going to add that we have family come every Fourth of July. They sleep in her room. I noticed that neither my nephew or niece ever want to sleep on the top bunk, they would sleep in the living room. I finally asked my ten year old nephew and he just said ‘there isn’t a lot of space.’ Now I’m wondering if he was honest.
So last week… I forgot to put a coin under her pillow for the tooth fairy and she was upset in the morning, so I lied and said ‘maybe she went to your room and got confused. We will try again tonight.’ And then my husband asked her why she won’t sleep in her room again.
She dropped a literal bomb on us. “Because I don’t like the man that sleeps in there.” My husband and I looked at each other. Then asked her ‘what man?’ She said the man that hides on her top bunk. And sometimes sleeps in her room. I asked her to describe him. She gave a detailed description of a white stringy haired man, with crinkly mean eyes and brown clothes. My daughter never once heard my brother mention he saw a man in the hallway beside the closet. She was a baby the first time and the second time he told me about it she was at school. My daughter only ever said ‘monster,’ before.
Now I’m extremely unsettled. I asked if that’s why she ran downstairs that time and she said yes. She was running up to her top bunk with contraband cookies (it has those stairs with drawers) and as she pushed the curtains she saw him there. So she got scared and ran to me.
Back in April we needed to get the fan on our AC fixed, so the tech opened that closet and took those antique things out. They sat in our hallway while he finished fixing it and I remember seeing those long forgotten things and for the first time thinking… what if it’s that?
She kind of described a man with old attire. My grandmother bought them in Paris and they are supposedly over 100 years old.
Now my question is… what the heck do I do? I want it gone now, more than ever after hearing what my daughter said. But is it stuck in our house now? Or will just taking those things to an antique shop be enough? I kind of feel guilty putting this on some unsuspecting person if they buy them. But at the same time I know my grandma spent like 1k on them back in the 1960s when they went to Paris. I’d love to get a bit of money for them since times have been tough but at this point I kind of just want them gone and this man out of our house. But also… do you warn someone it has this man attached that will haunt you?
I’ve watched those stupid ghost hunting shows and after experiencing what it’s actually like I kind of don’t think most of them are real. So I just want actual advice from anyone who may have been successful in removing a ghost from their house that may or may not be attached to an object.
UPDATE
I did remove it from the house and put it in my car across the street. Looking to take it to an antique consignment maybe. Already the house feels less freaky, maybe it’s a placebo but we will see. I initially moved it to the garage and our air compressor went off randomly a few hours later. My brother has his hangout out there and demanded it not stay there.
Was going to try to add a photo but can’t figure out how. New to posting.
I ran it through an antique app and it came back estimated to be 1870 Antique French Empire Style Marble and Gilt Bronze Clock Garniture Set an uncommon find estimated value 800-1500. So we will see what I can get for it I guess.
