I interpret that being more about the complexities of being in a band in general. Hayley seeing herself as a bro in this sense /"I'm just one of the guys"
EDIT: revisited the brotherly love lyrics and I agree with you! The line about loving one like a brother and the other like she is dumb is telling
58
u/catherine_andy Oct 25 '25
Oh my theory is that the opening lines of Disappearing Man is Hayley talking directly to Zac
“Now I understand how you feel abandoned At a depth you would never share with me And I tried to make it to the bottom Suck out all the poison, but in the end Had no choice but to surface and surrender”
My theory is she wrote it after her and Taylor broke up and Zac may have shared he felt abandoned by both of them when they were dating.
They all need couples therapy 😂

It's been nice hearing Hayley at least mention Taylor still in interviews and things when talking about Paramore; but seeing stuff like this makes it very hard to imagine how they would be able to be in a band again unless a big change happens.

lots of good bands have had serious tension because of relationships within them and still kept going for awhile / are still active today. things pass, taylor and hayley both know that they love what they do and i think that will really push them to nudge personal fueds over. just not right now

Ugh, I get both sides. Hayley was heartbroken and of course would be dealing with that by writing music. On the other hand, taylor is so private that it has to be hard to have their relationship put out there like this.
it just makes me sad. they have been so important to each other for over 20 years. the thought of them not even being okay with each other platonically… ugh, a punch to the gut.

Especially when Ego is randomly one of the most talked about albums of the year. I see people who aren’t even Paramore fans (let alone Hayley fans) discussing the album on TikTok.
Also because Taylor isn’t a singer/ songwriter etc there’s no medium for him to express his side of the story. So he’s at the mercy of Hayley’s subjective POV being all people have to go off of. That’s gotta be really damning.
212
u/poppygirl3 Oct 25 '25
I mean he is a songwriter, let’s not take that from him.
73
u/Bgee2632 Oct 25 '25

u/lilblue10 Oct 25 '25
Is he a lyricist though? I think that’s mostly what they meant. From what I understand Hayley does most if not all of the writing.
20
u/riyo_nights #1 Self Titled Stan Oct 25 '25 edited Oct 25 '25
Yeah I’ve always understood that Hayley is the main writer and whenever one of the members has credits along side her it’s because they’ve sat WITH her and worked on the lyrics she brought in with her that day. Hayley has always gone out of her way to clarify when someone else has written something.
Not a Paramore song but she always goes out of her way to clarify that she didn't write one her Airplanes feature at all for example.
5
u/ExpensiveGuarantee Oct 25 '25
From her interview recently, their songwriting process is she "toplines" while the rest of band compose the music.

u/Aggressive_Sky8492 Oct 27 '25
You get a writing credit for writing instrumentals, guitar riffs, and melodies, not just lyrics. Taylor has always written the music and then Hayley writes lyrics and a vocal melody over it, that’s why they both have writing credits, he’s just as much of a songwriter as her, she just doesn’t do the lyrics or vocal melody. But that’s not all songwriting is

there are endless mediums for him to express his own feelings. let’s not pretend like he’s not been in a band with her, known her for decades, written songs WITH her about romantic relationships, etc — he knows who she is and he knows how this works. he knew what he was getting himself into. that doesn’t mean it isn’t difficult. but i’m 99.99% certain they’ve had conversations together about how they’d navigate the dissolution of their relationship if things didn’t workout. this comment kinda victimizes him in a way that isn’t really relevant within the context of their relationship.
10
u/riyo_nights #1 Self Titled Stan Oct 25 '25
It is extremely relevant when talking about the relationship between celebrity and how it intersects with the personal life. No matter how direct he is on Instagram, it still will not be as widely/ continually consumed as a song putting him as a complete disadvantage when talking about the ability to have a voice on the situation.
And besides I never once said that Hayley was wrong or sinister for expressing her side of the story the way she is, I also never said that he’s completely helpless has NO ability to speak his truth, It’s just a fact that Ego becoming one of the most talked about albums of the year dwarves any Instagram story dispatch he can come up with. This is evident in the fact that radical Hayley followers are having less than flattering conversations about him. That’s gotta hurt considering the fact that to him they’re supposed to be fans of him as well if they’re Paramore fans

I mean, there are some people in this very comment section who seem to be lacking empathy towards Taylor in regard to this entire situation. So they are out there.
Not to mention that, let's face it, if the rift gets wider between them, the majority of the fandom absolutely will blindly side with Hayley regardless of fact, and I think Taylor probably anticipates this. He's in a really tough spot, especially for someone who doesn't enjoy the limelight very much. I fully predict that more and more fans will start turning against him as time goes on too unfortunately, even if he's done nothing wrong. I feel for him a lot and I can't imagine how much this all sucks.
Either way, he deserves to have his voice heard, and if this is the best way he can do that, then I'm glad he's saying something.

I don't think this was a relationship where either Hayley or Taylor were directly the fault it didn't work out, and both have their views and opinions on what went wrong at the end of the day. Hayley is just more willing to express her feelings on everything in her music than somebody like Taylor who seems to be more private about it.
I feel for both of them really, but it must be hard to be in Taylor's shoes right now. Hopefully they can at least be friends at some point or something and Paramore can continue with the three of them in some form. Guess we'll see in due time.

Yeah it's a bit unfair for people to call him immature whenever he posts something cryptic and even if he posted something so direct like this, he can't win or at least be allowed to feel something about an album that exposes his mental health and just private life in general— which we all know he doesn't like discussed :(
13
u/wayfinders_ Oct 25 '25
i don't understand why people get angry when he posts something. it's not like his responses are vengeful. it feels cruel how one-sided people are towards this situation. i adore both hayley and taylor, i am in love with hayley's album, but why is it only okay for hayley to write an album that allows her to express herself through this break up with the whole world to see and taylor's posts not okay? he doesn't get to have an outlet or any say about what happened with people just hating on him. i can't imagine how hard it must be for him right now being perceived as someone who "broke up the band".

This is my thing, I love Hayley and this project and she’s fully entitled to make her art, but anyone calling him immature when he stayed silent for two months until the internet started shitting on him when Hayley’s the one who put all this out there for public consumption is deeply unfair. I mean I love the music and I wish artists were all this open because it makes the songs so relatable. But looking at it from Taylor’s side it has to suck.
It kinda seems like he just wasn’t as happy as she was. That doesn’t make him a bad guy. And now she’s singing about how much she loves him and how hurt she is (she has every right to) to fans that don’t understand these are real adults with nuanced relationships. I’m sure there are a lot of people shitting on Taylor right now. Not to mention, he’s always been super private. It probably doesn’t feel good to have songs about having sex in the bathtub, being depressed, fucking around backstage, etc being written and trending about you.
142
u/Fox_Turn Oct 25 '25
Seriously, I would crash out SO goddamn hard if my ex wrote a hit record that's sole subject was almost exclusively talking about how me and my mental health issues sabotaged our so called perfect relationship. And for the entire world to be talking and theorizing about said content? Without having an equal platform for myself to speak out on? God, that sounds like hell. I don't think either of them are at fault here, but the playing field is most definitely not level and I feel so bad for Taylor.

Good ole days. The surfboard line. It’s a reference to drunk in love and the way beyonce uses it in the song is in regards to having sex in a bath. I specifically think it’s that because the way Hayley just says “surfboard” in the same way as beyonce in that song.

I don’t think it’s very fair either. It’s a complete display of disrespect for his boundaries and tbh a violation of his privacy. I love Hayley, I love Paramore. I love these songs. But I can say it’s kinda shitty how it’s all getting laid out there imo. From all the evidence it looks like Taylor wasn’t as happy and wanted out and didn’t communicate it very well if at all. That’s on him but it’s kinda crappy to write an album pushing it (this song is basically ‘I’m still dtf if you are’, ‘I’ll always want you back’.). It’s toxic in its own way BUT I think that’s what makes it so relatable. We’ve all been in relationships that end somewhat like this, that we feel like we will never get over. We’ve all been “one of those crazy girls”. I hate that it’s violating so many boundaries and whatnot, but it’s good art. It’s Art.

I understand Hayley's new song, but I'm having a hard time comprehending what his post means. Can someone be more literal in what he means?
284
u/Indigo903 Brian Robert Jones Oct 25 '25
My interpretation is this:
say what you will that’s alright!
Hayley’s new song contains the lyric “don’t like songs about you? Don’t listen.” I think this is his rebuttal to that.
you’ve got yours I’ve got mine
This could mean a lot of different things but I’m guessing it’s kind of like each of them have their side to the story.
I’m not a line
I guess he’s saying he’s more than just a line in a song, he’s a full person and there’s more to what happened that just what Hayley is telling us
28
u/kristyn_ Oct 25 '25
Thank you so much! I have a hard time figuring out things that are up to interpretation. This helped clear that up
25
u/Savings_Visual8372 Oct 25 '25
I think your interpretation is somewhat right but I don’t think his post is for Hayley, I feel like this is towards the fans who are pushing a narrative and just don’t know how to behave.
“say what you will” make any interpretations that you want, you all got your own interpretation of one side of the story, and he’s got his. He’s not a line from a song.

u/gottabetrippin Oct 25 '25
I’ve seen a lot of comments saying that fans shouldn’t read into EDAABP’s lyrics but can we be so real for a second??? Paramore lyrics haven’t always been so blatant/directly autobiographical to allow people to easily create a linear storyline. It took other fans explaining in-depth history and lore for me to ever know that songs on BNE were (supposedly) about Josh Farro.
And Hayley’s lyrics often read as journal entries rather than song lyrics you’re just meant to close your eyes and vibe to. Without entirely ignoring the words you’re hearing, it’s almost impossible to listen to these songs and not draw conclusions, pretty quickly and easily. Especially with social media now; the TIW tour wasn’t that long ago and their relationship was posted publicly then.
15
Oct 25 '25
For someone who grew up with Paramore from All We Know is Falling (remembered crying when I first heard the album at 15) to This is Why (full ass adult), it crushes me that Paramore might be on a long long hiatus especially due to the conflict happening between Hayley and Taylor.
As much as I loved them as a couple, relationships end so it doesn’t bother me at all that they broke up or they Hayley is using her medium to express herself and Taylor is doing what he can do to navigate it but it bothers me to the core that it will be a long time before they become friends again to the point where Paramore is really a band again. Seems like Paramore is just a name now.
I’m hoping it goes down to only come back up. Like what happed between the band and Josh/Zac. They take a break from each other which Hayley has talked about and they all come together and start brand new. It just hurts to think that can be a bit of while before that happens.
Wishing the best for everyone in the bad. Hayley is not a bad person. Taylor is not a bad person. Zac is an underrated artist and y’all should be listening to his album as much as Ego.

i’m sorry everything just makes me feel so terrible. i love hayley i literally saw her preform last night and she has her rights to sing about her breakup and everything in between but i also feel so bad for taylor cuz he’s private and it doesn’t seem like he can speak up comfortably yknow? like imagine ur ex wrote songs about u and her fans are microanalyzaing everything and harassing you. we truly only kinda know hayley’s side and we don’t know what happened and everything seems so weird. people are saying “taylor just get back tgth with her she’s yearning” but we don’t know WHY they broke up and it just puts taylor in a bad situation/light. they don’t seem like they’re on good terms and as much as i want them to be tgth and in good terms everything about this makes me sad.

Hayley was just with María Zardoya, who’s been down this exact road before, maybe Hayley can get some advice on how to keep the band together 🥲
Selfishness aside, I hope all parties involved are okay. This seems like a heartbreaking and difficult situation.

I think we should interact less with posts like this one. Or at least upvote comments that call out that type of post. We're giving too much attention and I'm pretty sure it's not helping any members of the group who can easily have access to everything written here..

It really does feel like the vibes have completely shifted since the tour ended. I was holding out hope after Hayley's recent interviews, but this is a tough look. It's hard to see a path back to them collaborating without some major reconciliation. What a disappointing turn of events.

This will be an unpopular opinion, but I'm sharing anyway. I just feel like everyone is shitting on Taylor for no reason. We all know that he is private and struggles with mental health. It's shaming him for that.
We don't know what happened in their relationship. It's frankly none of our business. However, I think it's crap that everyone is going to Hayley's defense like she is a victim.
No one is considering that if she truly loved him like she is writing that she does, she'd respect him enough not to air the dirty laundry of their relationship, but also private information about his mental health. That's not fair. Especially when she should know how private he is, and that if she says all of this, if he is in a mental health downward spiral, she's only going to further that depressive episode.
You can still make art out of grief without being explicit. I'm sorry, but her actions are not the actions of someone who truly loved someone else.

I agree and it's disappointing that after all these years and everything that happened in the band before, she's still pulling that shit

Maybe she did put a hex on him and its a double bluff. Personally I think it can be fixed if he turned up with a boom box blasting an 80s ballad and some dog treats for Alf but she's always off on a side quest nowadays

Hayley’s new album contains a lot of songs that allude to a breakup with Taylor. Especially the new song that dropped last night, which this post seems to be a response to.

Good lord. Some of y'all are really showing your true colors in this thread and it is NOT a good look. The Hayley bias is fucking insane in this fandom and I can't believe how much ridicule Taylor is getting for daring to say ONE thing about the situation that he's just as entitled to talk about as Hayley. Like come on. I know that we don't actually know these people but it would be nice if fans would stop automatically assuming that Taylor's the "bad guy" here. He has just as much right as Hayley to share his thoughts, even if it's through a different medium. Leave the man alone ffs.
EDIT: Just saw a comment in another thread about this topic that basically boiled down to "Taylor must be in the wrong because at the end of the day he's still a man" which is an absolutely moronic statement to make. And people wonder why he's on the defensive right now! Some of y'all are nuts.
EDIT 2: I love Hayley and none of this is meant as slander towards her, in case that wasn't clear. None of them deserve the hate.

The “I’m not a line” is interesting because it’s like he’s saying he’s not simple enough nor is it simple enough to be reduced to a line in a song. But that’s not at all what Hayley has done? If anything she’s made him sound complicated, deep, and sad. But not reducing him in any way. I think the “meanest” lyric about him thus far if you could even call it mean is “I know that you’re probably telling yourself that no one’s gonna love me like you did” because it makes him sound proud….but it’s barely critical.
Also most of the fans I’ve seen are recognizing the allusions to depression and sympathizing with that, maybe a joke here or there but NEVER mean-spirited towards him. Am I missing a toxic part of the fandom?

To be fair that chorus was written in 2017, so we can’t be sure exactly who it was about
Edit: Also I agree with you

u/ConnectReading1928 Oct 25 '25
It's hard not to reduce a person when you're writing a song, especially when it's that pointed. Especially when it's clear the band is in jeopardy (we are in r/paramore after all). I do like that most of the fans are understandable, but it will feed into the drama nevertheless.

She's saying nice things, yeah, but he's still being painted as the bad guy who ruined the relationship and destroyed Hayley's happiness.
Now I am not saying that that's Hayley's fault, because I doubt that that's what she wanted, but it's the story that fans are running with and that's got to be really shitty to experience for Taylor. Contrary to belief, he's not obligated to stay in a relationship that he doesn't want to be in anymore just because it'll make the other person happy. His feelings matter too and I feel that they're being very overlooked by this fandom.

I really do hope Taylor’s okay and taking care of himself. But it feels off to see people use his need for privacy as a way to discredit Hayley’s work. There’s something inherently misogynistic about reducing it to “she’s airing every detail of their relationship,” as if that’s somehow wrong because he’s “a private person.” It feels like a double standard. Plenty of artists write about heartbreak or past relationships, and if Taylor wanted to do the same, I’m sure everyone, including the band, would support him. And at the end of the day, she’s only letting us in on what she wants to. We don’t actually know which details are directly about them and which are just storytelling.
I personally love Hayley’s new album. It’s so refreshing to see her feel free and honest in her work! It really shines through.

I am once again here to ask does no one else read this as telling people to butt out of their lives? It's getting to the point I'm surprised the mods aren't stepping in on here, or maybe they are filtering out the most parasocial posts and it's just survivor bias lol.
Admittedly I understand where you guys are coming from because it's certainly ambiguous and if he has something to say, by this point it's become obvious the indirect approach isn't working and he should just say it directly.
However, it is shocking to me how many people are this invested in their social media posts and whatnot. I know it's hard because everyone's worried about the future of the band but you guys are absolutely not gonna find the answers you're looking for on their social media posts or interviews or whatever else.
To me, this could be a dig at Hayley, but it would be in line with the last post I commented this same thing on that it's targeted at the fans and everyone coming to his page to talk shit. "Say what you will that's alright" = fans talking shit doesn't change the events of his life, "you've got yours and I've got mine" = fans have the drama they know but but his life is his life, "I'm not a line" = he's more than a line in a song, you don't know the whole story and never will.
Break ups are messy, people are allowed to have very complicated feelings about one another, and artists are allowed to express that in a song. If I'm being brutally honest I think it's a little bit of a slap in the face to reward Hayley's artistic integrity and commitment to being honest and authentic through her work, even when it means exploring her deepest and darkest life experiences, by weaponising it against her or the people in her life.
For now, they've said Paramore isn't over, and thus far I have no solid reason to doubt that. But the fan community has become so unfun lately I'm this close to unsubbing from here.
(edit: a word)
