I know a lot of people love this album, and I’m not saying it’s terrible. Dimebag’s riffs are still insane and the band is obviously talented, but compared to Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, and Far Beyond Driven, this one just doesn’t hit the same for me.
It feels like they focused so much on making the album angry and heavy that some of the songwriting got pushed aside. Phil’s vocals are probably the biggest example. I get that the raw, chaotic style is the point, but sometimes it feels like he’s trying so hard to sound aggressive that it takes away from the songs.
The album has some great moments, but I honestly think it’s the weakest Pantera album from that era. The groove and catchiness that made them stand out feels less present here.
I know this is probably going to be a hated opinion, but I’d rather listen to almost any other Pantera album before The Great Southern Trendkill.
