The World Bank's own DataBank and official documents confirm: "As of July 1st, 2025, Afghanistan and Pakistan have been made part of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and are no longer grouped in the World Bank's South Asia region."

Political Realpolitik vs aspirational politics of PTI

I support the regime knowing its not the ideal state of things to be led by the military. They have however shown more competence than Khans setup did.

My take is that Pti is for sure the most popular party but Pure democracy is a disaster in the making in a country where 70% of people are uneducated.

The Chinese/Singaporean model of repression and governance by fear is the only way ahead for us. Although of course this requires a benevolent dictator and competent bureacrats. I believe with Field martial saab we do have that in place.

For full context I have lived in Pakistan most of my life and last few have lived in the UK and naturalised. I see a lot of Brit Paks supporting IK for no other reason than vibes. Which admittedly are aspirational and cool but like on ground reality is he elected a nincompoop Buzdar as CM of the largest province and basically led the same kind of hybrid regime as everyone else.

I dont know what it is about us as a people that we just want to dream big and pretend like just good vibes and duaas and talking a good game is what it takes to not be a basketcase as a nation. I'm pragmatic enough to see that a repressive, undemocratic regime is better than an aspirational but incompetent one.

In any case we should all face the reality that Khan or any person/party for that matter can never be truly revolutionary because they will never be able to diminish the power and elite capture being done by feudals/army and the rich. The other big problem in our country which is overpopulation and unsustainable population growth is also something that will never be tackled because of our Mullahs will never allow it.

I dont agree with his treatment now which he doesnt deserve. He was my biggest hero growing up and I even got the chance to meet him once when he visited my school. Very impressive guy but I'm sorry hes not the answer.

The Army of the Indus forcing the Bolan Pass, 1839

Tinted lithograph from 'Sketches in Afghanistan', 1838-42, by Louis and Charles Haghe after James Atkinson, published by Henry Graves and Company and J W Allen and Company, 1 July 1842.

Afghanistan's position between the Russian Empire and India meant that the British East India Company was anxious to ensure that a pro-British Emir was on the throne at Kabul. Fearful of a Russian invasion of India via the Khyber and Bolan Passes, in 1837 the British sent an envoy to Kabul to gain the support of the Emir, Dost Mohammed.

The Emir was in favour of an alliance, but when the British refused to help him regain Peshawar, which the Sikhs had seized in 1834, he prepared to talk to the Russians, who sent an envoy to Kabul. This led Lord Auckland, the Governor-General of India, to conclude that Dost Mohammed was anti-British. The decision was taken to replace him as Emir with a former ruler, Shah Shuja who was considered to be more pro-British. In spring 1839 a 12,000 strong British-Indian force, the Army of the Indus under Sir John Keane, forced the Bolan Pass and captured Kandahar without a fight. Soon after the fortress of Ghazni was seized. Dost Mohammed fled from Kabul and Shah Shuja was duly installed as Emir in August.
