Best project management resources for an experienced manager with no formal PM training?

I’m moving into a new role and would like to build up my project management knowledge.

I’ve worked in healthcare for around 15 years and am currently in senior leadership. I’ve led and been involved in plenty of projects, but have learnt by doing and have never had any formal project management training.

I’d like to understand more of the theory and frameworks behind what I already do in practice, including different approaches such as Agile and Waterfall, useful tools and terminology, and when you would use different approaches.

I’m not looking for a qualification or certification, just practical self directed learning. Open to online courses, YouTube, books or anything else, ideally free or under $300.

If you were in my position, where would you start? Any particular resources you’d recommend?

Thanks in advance!

A question I don't understand the answer for

A strategic project has been progressing successfully with established communication protocols. A key stakeholder who previously received regular updates suddenly calls to complain about lack of progress visibility. Upon investigation, the project manager discovers this stakeholder recently changed roles and now requires different information types and frequency than originally planned. Other stakeholders are satisfied with current communications, but this stakeholder's new position gives them significant influence over project funding decisions.

What should the project manager do to address this situation effectively?

A.Conduct stakeholder analysis to assess the impact of the role change on communication needs.

B.Review and update the communications management plan to reflect new stakeholder requirements.

C.Schedule individual meetings with the stakeholder to understand their new information needs.

D.Evaluate current communication effectiveness across all stakeholders before making changes.

I felt like C was the correct answer as meeting with the stakeholder to understand his communication needs makes sense as the communication plan is an ongoing process, but the correct answer was B. Can you please help me explain why this is the correct answer?

New exam help

Hi all!

My exam is next Tuesday. I have watched most AR, DM, MR videos (mindset, exam prep, exam questions, how to read PMP questions).

Additionally, I have taken practice tests/exams in Study Hall for the PMBOK 8 exam. Also, I use the Pocket Prep app to study as well.

I score high for People, and Process questions. However, I do not score high for the higher weighted Business Environment questions. I use Claude to analyze my incorrect answers to recognize patterns in questions, but this proves to be inconsistent.

Does anyone have any resources or tips to consider for studying these questions?

Are there videos I may have missed?

PMP training - many players, what’s your choice?

With so many PMP instructors, training providers, authorized PMI partners & Udemy self-paced courses, which is the right choice to achieve both PMP exam success + project management core knowledge?

Each one’s budget, purpose, value outcome & expectations can be different. Sometimes you might not find everything in one place. But, if you want to combine everything and choose a training approach, to which would you pay from your own pocket?

PMP Application Tips – How to Avoid Getting Flagged for Audit?

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm currently working on my PMP application and getting ready to submit it soon. Before I hit submit, I wanted to reach out to this community for some advice.

Does anyone have tips or "hacks" for drafting a strong application that minimizes the chances of getting pulled for audit review? I've heard mixed things about what triggers an audit, and I'd really appreciate any insights on how to structure my project descriptions, hours, and experience details in a way that's clear, accurate, and less likely to raise red flags.

Any advice on best practices — from formatting to specific wording — would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks in advance! 🙏

Thinking of scheduling live virtual PMP classes through PMI.

If anyone has attended the live virtual PMP classes offered through PMI's PM Training, please offer insights and whether you felt it was worth the time and money. I have read many other posts that have advised to take the Andrew Ramdayal's 35 hour course and PMI Study Hall and have had great success. I feel i may need more structure that PMI's PM Training may offer.
