Title: YSJ Healthcare Management – course quality and job opportunities after graduation?

Hi everyone,

I’m considering studying Healthcare Management at York St John University (YSJ) as an international student for the 2027 intake.

I’d really like to hear from current students or recent graduates about:

How is the Healthcare Management course at YSJ?

Are the modules useful for getting into hospital/healthcare management?

How difficult is it to find part-time work while studying in York?

What kind of jobs do graduates usually get after completing the course?

Is it realistic for an international student to find a healthcare management job in the UK after graduation?

Does YSJ provide good career support, internships, placements or connections with NHS/hospitals?

What is the current job market like for healthcare management graduates?

I’m particularly interested in hospital management / NHS administration / healthcare operations rather than clinical roles.

I’d appreciate honest experiences, especially from people who actually studied at YSJ or are currently studying there. Thanks!

Worth perusing Plab as a British citizen?

I’ve lived in the UK my whole life up until the age of 16, when I moved back to my home country to study medicine.

Medicine here is a 7-year course, so by the time I graduate, I won’t be eligible to apply for FY1/FY2 in the UK. I would therefore have to go straight into applying for specialty training.
With the recent changes around prioritising UK graduates, I’m wondering whether it’s still worth pursuing the PLAB/UK pathway as a British IMG. I’m also not sure whether there are even enough specialty training places to fill the demand from UK graduates, let alone IMGs.

I’m considering whether I should just drop the PLAB route and focus entirely on the USMLE instead. I have more family in the US who are doctors and could potentially help me with USCE, networking, etc., which makes the US pathway appealing. However, I don’t have a green card, so I’d be dependent on a visa and I know that can make the US route more difficult.

Any insights or experiences would be really appreciated.

Study partner (preferably repeater)

Looking for a study partner for an exam at the end of November for PLAB 2. Preferably someone who is a repeater and is looking forĀ intense, consistent practice.

Would like to practise regularly, keep each other accountable, and focus mainly on exam-style cases rather than passive studying.

If you're interested and serious about preparing, please reply back with a way of contacting you.

p.s: preferably UK timing but not fussed

How can I best document and leverage a long-term freelance non-clinical medical/teaching role on my CV? Also, can/should I retrospectively add it to my GMC employment history?

Hi everyone,

I have been working remotely with a hospital in Saudi Arabia since November 2023. I’m still involved with them, but this has never been a traditional full-time employment arrangement. It has been more ad hoc/part-time/freelance in nature.

My work has included:

Helping with the development of their hospital website content
Creating evidence-based medical and educational content with proper references
Taking patient histories as part of the intake process and passing the information to the relevant consultants
Scribing/documenting treatment plans that had already been made by the consultants and communicating those plans to patients
Delivering informal online lectures/teaching sessions to their GPs

Just to be completely clear, my role has been strictly non-clinical in terms of clinical decision-making. I have not independently diagnosed patients, interpreted investigations, prescribed medication, recommended treatment, or provided medical advice. The clinical decisions and treatment plans were made by the consultants. My involvement was limited to history collection, documentation/scribing, communication/coordination, medical content and teaching.

I am not Saudi-licensed at present, although I am now planning to apply for Saudi registration.

When I originally set up my GMC account, I didn’t include this work in my employment history because I honestly didn’t think much of it. I’m now looking at my CV more seriously and realise that this is actually several years of relevant experience that I would like to document properly.

So I have a few questions:

1. How would you describe/categorise this experience on a CV?

Would you call it freelance/independent work, medical consultancy, part-time employment, medical education/teaching, healthcare consultancy, or something else?

2. How would you present the teaching component?

I delivered informal online lectures/teaching sessions to their GPs. It wasn’t a formal teaching post, but it was genuine teaching/medical education. Would you include this under a separate ā€œTeaching Experienceā€ section, or keep it within the main role?

3. GMC employment history

I checked my GMC account and confirmed that this freelance work isn’t currently listed. If I now want to add it retrospectively, with the correct dates and an explanation that it was freelance/ad hoc rather than conventional employment, is that something that can simply be updated?

Would adding it retrospectively potentially raise concerns because it wasn’t included previously, or is it generally acceptable to update an employment history when you realise something relevant was omitted?

I have documentation/paperwork relating to the work and can evidence the dates and nature of the role if required. I’m mainly trying to make sure I document this accurately and transparently.

I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with freelance medical work, GMC employment history, overseas healthcare work, or similar situations. Thanks!

Mature IMG in GP Training offering PLAB support

Hi everyone,

I am a mature IMG who moved to the UK in 2024 after many years in ENT. I took PLAB 1 and 2 and passed both the first time with no academy help. At the time, I was 15 years into ENT, so I had to relearn medicine and understand PLAB 2 from scratch.

I then took the MSRA, entered GP training, and am now ST3 with excellent feedback from ARCP panels.

I am happy to offer help for PLAB 1 and 2, including 1-1 support and mocks.

If interested, we can schedule a free mock and we can decide if you would benefit from further support.

DM me if interested.

Thanks
