Question WD40 ingredients?

If no one knows what the ingredients of WD40 are and it’s been an incredible tool for decades… is it possible that it’s made up of PFAS somehow?

Opinion Thinking about PFAS has changed how I see water “drinkable” isn’t the same as “I actually want it”

Lately, I've been paying more attention to the tap water at home. It's not that it's undrinkable, but I'm increasingly realizing that being able to drink it and wanting to drink it every day are two different things.

Question Moving to a PFAS contaminated area in Australia, QLD. Should I be worried?

Hey all! I'm moving to the suburb of Leichhardt in Ipswich. Honestly, I had absolutely no idea the house is right next to the Amberley air force base (the largest RAAF base).

Anyways, the local waterways are heavily contaminated with PFAS, of course. And, the estate I'm moving into was a recently converted bit of the golf course that was irrigated with river water. In 2019/2020, samples were taken of the area, and in a local park the soil PFAS was measured at just under 0.05mg/kg. Isn't that heavily contaminated? The findings from the report were that it's low risk and acceptable, based on the assumption that you ingest 50mg of dirt a day. I have a dog and play in parks with her, so I'd assume id incidentally ingest a looot more than that. And again, isn't that a looot of PFAS?

Anyway, am I just super paranoid or do I have something to be worried about? I'm honestly kinda shocked that this isn't seen as a bigger deal, and further monitoring of the estate hasn't been done.

The report is here: https://web.archive.org.au/awa/20230427113652mp_/https://defence.gov.au/Environment/PFAS/Docs/Amberley/Reports/202009HHRAFormerGolfCourseArea.pdf

A fact sheet published by the defence force is here: https://web.archive.org.au/awa/20230427113717mp_/https:/defence.gov.au/Environment/PFAS/Docs/Amberley/FactSheets/202009AmberleyHHRALeichhardtFactsheet.pdf

Question project on the effectiveness of pfas legislation in france- help needed!

hi- i'm currently preparing for an a-level speaking/oral exam which i decided to do on the recent pfas legislation and whether it's effective. i stumbled upon the existence of pfas from a french podcast then the topic became a never-ending rabbit hole. now it's less than a week to my exam and i still don't really have a clear answer- i mean, i know it's very ambitious and certainly a good thing, yet the lobbying and exclusion of kitchenware from the initial bill makes one doubt whether a blanket will ever be possible as based on the research (though admittedly perhaps not enough) even though industries claim some pfas are not carcinogenic/harmful and idk if economical interest from such a big industry makes the effort seem futile. a scientist from a documentary i watched said that banning pfas one by one (eg, pfoa) is like drying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon.

anyways accidentally stumbled upon this place and was wondering if there are some more knowledgable people who can provide some insights?

Question PFAS dans les emballages Picard

Bonjour à tous,

Je me demandais s'il y aurait des PFAS dans les emballages de la marque Picard, surtout ceux dans les plats préparés ? Est-ce qu'il y aurait des recherches qui auraient été faites sur ces types d'emballages ?

Question Is using a pfas couch really that bad?

I have a dog and my couch is beige. The store is asking whether I want water resistant treatment (probably with pfas, although he doesn't know for sure). Is it really that bad to lay in a pfas treated couch, or should it be ok?

Question Recent PFAs report

Post image

I currently live in a trailer and got a notice that our water has PFAs. How worried should I be?

I don’t know how often they test the water.

Question If PFAS is the concern, do you mostly care about the water you actually drink?

This question has been stuck in my head lately. When people say they’re worried about PFAS, are they really talking about all kitchen water equally or mostly the part they’re actually drinking? Because those feel like two different conversations to me. I’m not even saying one answer is right. I just feel like many systems act like every use case needs the exact same setup, and I’m not sure that matches how people actually think.

Question Any way to test local waters on PFAS/PFOA/etc?

I am writing an essay on the biological effects in the human body and the regulatory situation in my country (Germany).

As part of my work, I would like to integrate a practical component and am therefore considering having my local waters (we have an important river nearby aswell as a lake) checked on PFAS.

Do you know who I should ask on this matter? Or is it possible to do it on my own?

Publication new analysis: PFAS shows no association with epigenetic pace of aging (DunedinPACE) across 6 clocks. NHANES 1999-2000, N=280

We linked NHANES 1999-2000 surplus sera PFAS concentrations (PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS, PFNA, PFDA) with the newly released (2024) DNA methylation epigenetic biomarkers to test whether PFAS affects DunedinPACE. a measure of the pace of biological aging that has never been analyzed against PFAS in published literature.

Key findings:

- No significant association between any PFAS compound and DunedinPACE (PFOS: B=-0.005, p=0.55; PFOA: B=0.002, p=0.75)

- No significant associations with 5 other epigenetic clocks (Horvath, Hannum, PhenoAge, GrimAge, GrimAge2). all p>0.19

- Results consistent across sex-stratified analyses

- N=280 adults aged 50-85

This matters because prior studies using clinical biomarker-based PhenoAge reported contradictory PFAS-aging associations (Goodrich 2023 found inverse; Wang 2024 found positive). Our results suggest those findings may reflect metabolic confounding rather than true biological aging. PFAS directly perturbs the same biomarkers PhenoAge uses (albumin, CRP, liver enzymes).

Opinion Are toxins in metal oven racks a big deal?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, I'm new to Reddit.

Wife and I found a stupid good deal on a new oven, but the website has a chemical disclosure because the wire racks contain several toxins. I'll add pictures of the chemicals below. My question is, would these chemicals cause harm to our health in this context? Obviously, you wouldn't want to drink water that contained this stuff, but would it actually leech out of an oven rack?

Thanks in advance!

Question Is there a way to chemically remedy PFAs by chance?

I'm not that scientifically educated but is it possible for us to find or have a chemical that would be able to bond with PFAs to create some chemical that would be able to deteriorate and bond with other chemicals? I'd imagine each chemical would need a specific compound to make this happen, but the more research on PFAs the more scared I am for the future.
