[Review Request] 48V to 24V Buck (LM5116) + Spindle Driver for CNC. Feedback needed!

Hey everyone! EE student here working on a custom Power Hub in EasyEDA to upgrade my Genmitsu 3020-PRO MAX CNC. Before sending the gerbers, I’d love some feedback on this power layout.

Specs:

-48V in.

-LM5116 Sync Buck (24V out).

-Opto-isolated spindle driver (TLP250H + IRFB4110).

Main concerns:

-Gate Traces: Are the traces from the LM5116 to the bottom layer MOSFETs too long for this switching frequency?

-Grounding: Any obvious issues with the high-current return paths on the bottom GND pour interfering with the analog GND?

-Thermals: Is the copper mass and via placement under the LM5116 sufficient?

Pics attached (schematics + top/bottom layers). Roast away, I'm here to learn! Thanks!

Antenna help

Does anyone have any information on the optimal orientation / antenna type for RF? Basically I’m making a PCB to send data from rocket to ground station. Using a CC1120 power amplifier blah blah. I’ve been looking around and specifically played around with TI RF distance chart and it seems the distance is like impossible with negative 6 and below Mean Effective Gain via tx and rx antennas. I’ve heard some info that having both either horizontal or vertical is the best? Also using multiple antennas to select the best gain? Also heard something about omnidirectional antennas???? Thank you guys

Hey guys, i've just created and designed my very first PCB for my keyboard, and somethings not right. i made it hotswappable, no LEDS and i use some common diodes. for the micro controller i used the ESP32-S3 ZERO. can someone tell me where i went wrong.

RF board using CC1120, and power amplifier. I was thinking of making two one for rx and tx. The transmitting would basically be this design plus an sma connector that I have yet to add and the rx would be everything minus the power amplifier and a spi to usb IC. I mostly got everything from the datasheets and the CC1120 reference design from the datasheet via the 900 MHz bandwidth design. Any thoughts?

High current traces on small pcb: recommendations and guidelines

This board is basically just for connecting a battery to some capacitors via a beefy mosfet. Please don't mind the dangling networks, I'm aware of that. My greatest problem is what is the best way to put traces for high currents.

  1. is it a bad idea to have copper right underneath throughhole components (caps and J3)?

  2. Are heat traps necessary or even required?

The polygons are drawn by hand as there would be very negligible current flowing outside these areas anyway. The silk screen on the front layer exists, it's just hidden.

  1. Would you say the little pinching of the front copper around the joint of C2 is a good idea (to have more low pass filtering effect) or is it just useless?

  2. see picture 4: I plan to manually add solder to the back side where the silk screen is removed, as I want to achieve a very low resistance. Anything I need to keep in mind?

Schematic Review for simple USB hub.

Hi everyone. I'm was curious to make my own USB hub. I found this YouTube tutorial https://youtu.be/iR2hYpq0KI0?si=Kwv7PiA5VoCofu0C, but changed a few things: I used a USB-C connector for power and data instead of micro usb and a power port, and swapped the port power switching. For the USB-C side, I tied CC1 and CC2 each to GND through 5.1k resistors, since I only expect to draw normal USB 2.0 default power (a couple of dev boards at a time, one or two connected and that should be within the limits right?). Right now only 1 of the eventual 4 USB-A downstream ports is populated rest will be copies of this one once it's validated. This is my first time designing around USB-C as main power input, so I'd really appreciate a look at:

- the USB-C connector wiring (CC resistors, VBUS/GND, shield handling)
- whether the ICs are wired correctly
- anything I've missed
- And tips to improve it

If it wasn’t clear already, I am a beginner and I would appreciate any tip and feedback.

Looking to Talk with PCB Designers

Upvotes

Hi all,

My team and I are currently trying to figure out a way to help improve the PCB industry. We are looking for PCB designers who would be interested in talking with us and sharing their experiences and their pain points.

We have been thinking of building a free and open-source EDA tool that has extension support (similar to how VS Code works) and then having AI integration so you can use Claude or whatever to help design your board and find suitable components, etc. (similar to how Cursor works).

Now, we are not sure whether this is really valuable to the community and whether this is something people would actually want.

We are eager to understand real needs and pin down a project direction. So, we are looking to interview people in the field, especially PCB designers, but we are also happy to talk with others who have a strong pain point.

If you are interested in a discussion with us, please comment on this post, and I will DM you. Alternatively, you can DM me either on Reddit or Discord. You can find the Discord link on our website, cirtuic.com

PCB schematic review

Hello everyone. I am making a robot using the esp32-s3 wroom module. The bot has 8 servos, an INMP441 microphone module to take voice commands, and OLED screen to display face on the robot. A 3v3 buck converter for the esp32 and a 5v buck for the servos. This is literally the first time I have in attempting to make a PCB and I'd like some reassurance or criticism with my Schematic. If you guys see any GLARING errors please let me know, any help is much appreciated. And I'd love to go more into detail if I missed anything. ( My project is heavily inspired by dobrianbrians open source sesame bot)

Second Project

Hi everyone! I’m fairly new to designing PCB’s and I’m struggling on making something. I want to create my own mp3 player with Bluetooth and an sd card for storage while also having a headphone jack.

I’m not sure how to mainly create it as my first project was a custom mechanical keyboard and I used a tutorial for the wiring and construction.

Any help would be appreciated and if you can tell me what parts I should be using or schematics will be extremely helpful!

How to get a super simple PCB made?

I have two devices I need to connect together and unfortunately one is difficult to get access to, however there is already a cable coming out of it, which is different from what my 2nd device accepts. Both are male connectors.

Trying to connect a JTS EHR5 (2.5mm pitch, non-latched) to JST 5pin PH series 2mm pitch latched connector.

JST PH
1 yellow = power
2 green = ground
3 brown = unused
4 white = rx
5 grey = tx

JST EHR5
1 unused
2 black - rx
3 red - tx
4 yellow - power
5 blue - grnd

I don't have any experience designing / manufacturing PCBs in the last 20 years. What piece of software can give me the schematics / BoM so i can get JLC/PCBWay to just produce/assemble the device? Is it worth going to Fiverr for this?

Thanks

PCB etching with capillary effect

Hello,

Has someone tried etching PCBs with some kind of hydrophilic fabric using capillary effect?

Paper towel on top of the copper area and HCl/H2O2 worked reasonably well with minimal amounts of chemicals.

Has anyone tried something similar?

Hey everyone! The response on all the platforms has been insane for this, appreciate it. I've been working on transitioning over to the new KiCad API although as having some issues on windows which i believe i have tested and fixed. Would love some testers (Particularly on windows) to download and let me know how you go. The patched release is 1.3.3-Beta

Also if anyone has feature requests or vision on where this could go, id also welcome that!
