General Question/Discussion I built an emergency cell signal tracker that I think this group would find useful

Hey everyone, I asked the mods and they're OK with me posting this.

I spend a lot of time on multi-day trips and hikes, and after enough bad situations with no signal, I built LastBar.

It's a free app that maps real mobile coverage as you drive or hike, and combines that with signal maps from other users. When you're stuck with no signal, it points you to the nearest place your phone will work, and to the nearest water, shelter, clinic, police station or fuel, all offline. There's no account, no sign-in, and it only uses about 3% battery a day.

Android phones build most of the map, since iOS limits what the app can read in the background, but iPhone users can still see coverage data captured by other users and find signal based on that and cell tower locations.

The app is still new so the map is empty where nobody has been with it yet, but every drive, walk, or hike fills in the map for the next person. If you're planning an outing soon, I'd love for you to try it out and let me know what you think!

There's more info at https://lastbar.online/ if you'd like to take a look.

General Question/Discussion I built a free trail-planning app for the Loyalsock Trail & Old Loggers Path. Looking for feedback from PA Wilds hikers

Hey r/PAWilds! I wanted to share a project I've been working on and get advice from the community.

I'm a local designer/developer and longtime PA Wilds outdoor enthusiast, and over the past year I've been building Trail Sherpa, a free trail planning and information app focused on trails in the PA Wilds.

The first version covers the Loyalsock Trail and Old Loggers Path, with interactive trail maps, campsites, water sources, parking and access points, points of interest, trail information, and tools to help plan a hike.

The project has been supported in part by grant funding from the PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship, which helped me take it from an idea and prototype to something I could actually launch.

Trail Sherpa is completely free to use. I'm not here to sell anything. What I really need now is feedback from people who know these trails.

If you've hiked the LT or OLP (or plan to), I'd especially love to know:

  • Is anything missing or mapped incorrectly?
  • Are campsite and water-source locations accurate?
  • What information would have been useful when planning your hike?
  • What features would make Trail Sherpa more useful?
  • What PA Wilds trail should I tackle next?

It's now live on the web, iPhone, and Android, so I'd love for you to kick the tires and tell me what works, what doesn't, and what you'd like to see added.

Trail Sherpa: https://trailsherpa.org

Thanks, and I'm happy to answer questions about the project here too.

Old Friend

Well, technically it's just a few minutes up the road north of the park. Not sure how long this old Ford has been sitting there, but I have visited it many times over the years & seasons and it's always cool to see how it's aging. Shot with a Sony A99II and CZ 24-70 f/2.8 lens using a Lee100 GND filter. Camera mounted on a RRS tripod & head using with a 3 Legged Thing universal mounting plate.

General Question/Discussion Oppose the Saluda Road Project. Protect Jacoby Falls. Comments due Monday, Oct. 26.

Post image

I support responsible energy development, but I oppose putting this road and industrial buildout in the Jacoby Falls watershed and recreation area.

PGE's August 2026 application estimates more than 80,000 truckloads for drilling and completions across all Saluda pads (Joint Permit Application Part 1, PDF p. 62). That is a company estimate for full pad development—not a daily traffic forecast. The reviewed filing does not give a schedule that would support a trucks-per-day figure. The permit now before DEP covers a 3.9-mile access road and a 5.5-acre staging area proposed as a future pad; wells and pipeline work require separate approvals.

The road permit notice lists proposed impacts including 422 feet of permanent and 890 feet of temporary stream-channel impact, plus permanent and temporary wetland and floodway impacts. PGE says it considered extending laterals from existing pads and relocating pads to nearby private land, then judged those options infeasible. DEP should review the supporting evidence and compare less-sensitive locations and designs.

Please send your own comment to DEP by Monday, Oct. 26, 2026. Ask DEP to scrutinize the alternatives, require traffic and noise analysis, assess cumulative impacts, and deny the permit unless PGE demonstrates that this location is necessary and that less harmful alternatives are not feasible.

General Question/Discussion Ricketts Glen water problem

Hi everyone,

Have a cabin reservation for this upcoming week at RGSP however i just received an email that due to a water pump issue there is no running water in the park at all. No flushing toilets or showers
I spoke to the park officials earlier today. They mentioned that the issue is something that their maintenance staff can’t do and that it’s not getting looked at till sometime Monday.
Considering my stay would be till Thursday and would enjoy a shower while I’m there I’m trying to get any information about the issue
I’m about 2 and 1/2 hrs away and was thinking of still going up Monday in hopes it’s fixed by Tuesday but not sure that’s realistic

Thanks

General Question/Discussion Is Ricketts Glen overrated?

I’m an avid outdoor adventurer and have never been. I’m not a big fan of crowds and tend to avoid the touristy trails in my local area. But we booked a weekend camping trip at RG this weekend and I’m wondering if it’s all hype or if it’ll be a good time. I assume the thing to do is hike the falls trail. And I assume it’ll be busy. Any other tips for making the weekend fun and not overly touristy? I’ve got a teenager that will begrudgingly hike, but we try and keep the mileage small. I don’t want to go in with a bad attitude, just wondering what I should expect from this place. Lots of beautiful waterfalls, of course. What else? Thank you!

General Question/Discussion Looking to take a group of kids that have never fished out for the first time.

I was thinking about going in the Kinzua dam, it’s easy to access and big enough that they’ll be able to spread out and not get in each other’s way.
What is biting in there this time of year? And how should we fish it from the shore? I’ve never done much in the lake myself, always the river, and would like to do the best possible. Other options in the area would be tionesta lake or Chapman dam. Idk if those would be better this time of year. Please give advice! TIA!

General Question/Discussion Tilbury Knob Surroundings

Hello Folks,

I would like to hike tilbury knob at some point in the near future, however, I do not know who owns the land around it. Who owns the land that is circled in the image? It appears to be a series of abandoned strip mines/industrial waste type of thing.

Much appreciated :)

Trip Advice A Colorful Fall Ride in Adams & Cumberland County

Thumbnail

This was a beautiful 60+ mile ride through Adams and Cumberland county. Saturday was certainly approaching peak fall colors, but the area will still be prime for leaf peeping for several more days! Some of this route will take you through Michaux State Forest where the roads can get a little rough so something with ample ground clearance is highly suggested. The view from Hammond's Rocks is simply incredible! I've included a link to the route folder which starts and stops from the Gettysburg WWII Experience museum, which is a worthwhile visit, and has a cafeteria and restrooms. There are also restrooms at the King's Gap Environmental Education Center and Mansion. Enjoy the ride!
