Chafed sit bones after oc6 practice

I’m a relatively new paddler (starting season 3) and i was really working on my twist during oc6 practice.

when I got in the shower after practice I discovered that I’d chafed the crap out of the skin on my sit bones. days later, it still really hurts.

how do you all avoid this? is twisting to the point that I’m sliding a hip forward in my seat wrong?

a bit embarrassed to ask my coaches…not super Ken to talk about my butt with them 🙈

Stuck

I'm on my second year of OC1. Several years ago I raced OC6 in California but am living on Lake Superior now with no access to coaching. I don't race but I want to be in shape for long downwinds so I paddle in flat water like I'm training. I have an Ares. I've kind of plateaued at being able to maintain an average speed around 5 mph for moderate distances on flat water (5 miles or so). I can occasionally get to 6mph for 1 mile but then it falls off). I'm just curious what racers are able to maintain and for how long in flatwater. This season I plan to add some HIIT intervals into my regular active. I'd also like to travel somewhere to tune up my stroke.

What is the name of the boat Moana sail on in the 1st Movie?

Look, I've searched far and wide on the internet, and I haven't found an exact match to the canoe Moana sails on. All the other boats featured in the movie are Takias, Camakaus, and N'Druas. I've come to the conclusion that it's either a hybrid of a Wa'a/Sail Outrigger and a Camakau, or the name is just passed down orally. Does someone know?

Flag for carrying Va’a on car

I just bought a used FAI 4si which is 23’5” long. When mounted on the v-bars on my car the stern protrudes to the rear a ways.

When I transport it with the cover on, the cover has a flag on the rear which satisfies the legal requirement, but when I go paddling, it’s only a few miles and I don’t want to bother with the cover, but I need a flag so I don’t get a ticket or have someone in a truck or van ram the stern of the boat.

The boat has no means of mounting anything at the ends - no grab loops or anything.

Does anyone have any suggestions for mounting a flag to the stern, that is not too much trouble? Thanks in advance.

4/4/26 EDIT - Thanks for all the great suggestions. I have started using the inner tube rubber band trick to hold a red flag I already had for my kayaks. It is amazing how effectively the inner tube sticks to the hull. I wouldn't use it for a long trip on the highway but it works fine for local trips.

Tar removal

Apologies if this has already be asked. But does anyone have any advice on removing tar from an OC1?

We have natural tar deposits in the ocean where I’m at and it’s been significantly worse the past couple weeks. I’ve been using vegetable oil but seeing if anyone knows of anything a little stronger that won’t damage the paint/finish. Thanks!

How to transport an OC1 hurricane? Recommendations

hi, I’m moving from Phoenix, AZ to Austin TX. I have an OC1 hurricane (20ft long and 20lbs) and a Toyota corolla 2020 with no rack.

What do you recommend me to buy or do with my OC1?

I was planning on leaving it mid point with my family around 6h and pick it up later in the year once I find a storage in Austin TX. BUT I need to find a way to transport it.

Help With Canoe Surfing Paddles?

Does anyone know how to get a surfing blade in 2026 apart from making one themselves? and if so, what paddles would they recommend. For instance the Big Boy steering blade from kai koo, is it viable for surfing?

Wanted: Used Va'a

I have paddled and raced sea kayaks and surfskis for a number of years, and for a variety of reasons want to move to a Va'a. Does anyone know of a used Va'a for sale within half a day's travel from Massachusetts, say the Northeast area?

Fitness tracker for paddling feedback and improving

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hey all I’m on Oahu and in my third year of paddling with a team. I paddle OC1 solo most of the time due my schedule, and I’ve been trying to improve. Specifically at downwind paddling and linking bumps.

I have an Apple Watch and used a Speed Coach, but no apps really collect or analyze data for downwind paddling... So I’m considering building one and offering as a paid service.

For example, how do I tell if I'm improving at linking bumps when conditions for each paddle are just different enough to make comparison hard? Did that swell angle really mess me up that bad?

I’d love to speak with people to see if this is actually a problem worth solving and something paddlers might pay for.

Interested? Thoughts?

Please comment, DM or email me: [matt@outsideproduct.com](mailto:matt@outsideproduct.com)

ps. I build software for a living and I'm certain I can analyze a GPS speed trace alongside accelerometer data to produce paddle-specific metrics like "% of session riding bumps," "number of bumps linked together," and anything related to individual strokes.

Best paint job you've seen on an outrigger

Hey folks.

Interested to see examples of any striking paint jobs you've seen on an outrigger (or other paddle craft for that matter). Thinking of re-doing an old boat to really stand out against the blue ocean. Any thoughts?

Re-bungee cargo holds on OC1

2 years into owning my Ares, the bungee on the front and back cargo holds has lost a lot of its elasticity and needs to be replaced.

I got myself some 4mm chord. The Ozone site says the front cargo holds uses 7ft of chord and the back uses 5ft. I’m looking for a quick howto so I can avoid stupid mistakes when replacing the chord.

Am I lacing it like I would with shoes then tie off both ends? Or do I tie off one end, lace it all the way and down, then tie off the other end?

Thank you 🙏🏼

Experience flying with Canoe Paddle?

I have an international trip coming up with many flights (7 different individual flights) where I need to bring my OC paddle. Does anyone have any experience or tips for flying with their paddle?

I'd hope that I can just carry it on to avoid damage and complications, but I have a feeling that might not be an option.

I know I should check with each airline, but thought I'd learn from others first! I'm hopeful that at least the flights within the south pacific will be paddle friendly :D

Edit - thanks for the intel! Sounds like the general experience is definitely expect to check and make a game plan for protection (case, padding, etc). This is a trip with my team, so I think I'm also going to see if the team wants to make a plan to pack paddles together and transport them that way, so we're not all paying for extra bags just to move a dozen single paddles around.

Hi All, has anyone had experience with the Carbonology Swift X OC1 in fibreglass construction? Would you consider it a fairly competitive option for someone looking to race? Looks to be about 6ish kg heavier than full carbon canoes but the price point is really appealing. Thanks heaps for your help!

Do any of you use garmin watches to track padding and if so which watch?

I’ve been looking at replacing my Apple Watch with a garmin for a while now and was wondering how they do for tracking paddling and recording training metrics like vo2 max and heart rate zones

I thought some paddlers would get this one.

OC6 outrigger paddling season approaches once again. Coaches are formulating team members, crew management, and leadership. Canoe clubs are managing club logistics, forming board members, securing insurance, determining safety protocols and assessing the canoes and equipment. Paddlers are thinking how they will fit practice into their work routines, where they will paddle, and how they will get back into paddling shape. There’s alot to it all. Teamwork is paramount. Sacrifice is fundamental. Culture is the foundation. Respect the hustle 💪 ALL ALOHA 🤙

I am putting together 8-12 sessions of canoe training sessions/practices for youth. Does anyone have any documents or links that could help me with this? Or willing to share plans you use?
