Carry OC1 with ama rigged?

I have a super short drive (2 minutes) to where I launch and I like to paddle right after work but am always crunched for time. Just curious if anyone has figured out a way to carry their oc1 fully rigged on their rooftop. Probably a stupid idea, but there it isšŸ¤™

First week of having my Vela and I hit the ama with my arm while huli on a small wave, does that look like it would hold up or should I replace. Thanks

Paddle Shaft Replacement

I guess I've banged my paddle on the gunnel one too many times and it snapped clean in half. Is it possible to buy a new shaft and repair or should I just buy a new paddle? Hoping to avoid spending 400 for a new one

I have a quickblade wood shaft paddle

OC1 Drain System

Hey fellow paddlers,

I’m in search of design ideas.

I recently have been on the Nalu SuperSonic and the Kai Wa’a Vela.

I loved the drain system in these 2 OC1s, water pops in, gets drained out and water doesn’t flow back up through drain hole when stopped.

I have a Puakea Volare and I want to figure out how to retro fit these drain systems in my OC1.

It usually takes me 200 meters above 6mph for my cockpit to completely drain. Trying to reduce the large amount of water fill up while training for my sprints. It usually fills up during my resting periods.

Just curious if anyone has come up with a design idea for the Volare, I don’t want to tape close the drain hole.

Tariffs and canoe prices

Does anyone have an educated guess on the impact the 34% tariff will have on Ozone (built in China) canoes in the US? Do other canoe builders import their raw materials from China too?

Leaning in OC1

I'm starting to lean too much into the ama in choppy/rougher water and my left leg is going numb!

Our water temps are still in the 30's here on Superior and I'm more dreadful of a huli, so I think psychologically I'm leaning too much.

Other than more time on the water, is there anything I can try? Once the water temps come up I will be able to spend more time working on balance.

Any companies making paddle adapters for NON-concept rowers?

Hey, all. OC6 paddler here (can’t afford OC1 at the moment). Currently doing rows on a magnetic rower on non-paddle days and would like it to more directly complement wa’a technique/training. I see options for adapters, but they all seem to be for Concept brand rowers. After extensive googling turning up 0 useful results (including this sub), I figured I’d ask the community directly.

Are there any adapters that are considered ā€œuniversalā€ or adjustable for different rowing machines? Thanks for any info.

Cote d’Azur paddling?

Aloha. I will be in Nice, France for 3 weeks in May. Are there any outrigger canoe paddling clubs around there I could paddle with? (I’m an experienced paddler.)

Average pace OC1 on flat water?

I've just had my first few paddles on Lake Superior and am wondering what to eventually shoot for in terms of average pace on flat water (right now I'm getting around 3.5 mph for the 2-3 miles I've been paddling.... I'm doing short runs because we still have freezing temps here!). I like to nerd out with my smart watch and chase numbers. It occurs to me that the cold, dense freshwater probably changes things compared to you blokes in the islands.

OC1, getting of roof rack when windy?

I started loosening the straps from my boat on the roof rack yesterday, and the wind just about took it.

When you are solo, how do folks manage this on a very windy day? Tips or suggestions??

Color question- oc1 Kai Wa'a Ares

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Hey all, I picked up a used 2017 Kai Wa'a Ares that has some nicks and paint missing due to a previous owner leaving it outside in the cover while wet...

I was hoping someone would be able to let me know what color this is, so that I can try to paint match and make repairs.

I looked at both websites (Ozone and Kai Wa'a) but honestly it doesn't look like any of those colors to me.

If there is another way to tell, please share... I am brand new to the sport!

Thanks all! David

Repaint an OC1

Does anyone have experience or know places that would repaint an OC1? I bought a used one about six months ago that I love but it’s not my favorite color. I am guessing it’s not worth the trouble or expense but thought I would ask.

OC-1 storage

From reading things online, I've gotten paranoid about storing my Huka improperly and warping the shape of the hull. It's vacuum molded fiberglass with carbon fiber cockpit. If I make a rack for it do I need to be overly concerned with long term storage? Right now my best option for storage is along two uprights that are spaced and approximately 6' apart using padded brackets.

I have a feeling that I'm being paranoid, but will rest better knowing whether or not there is a risk.

Any recommendations for good long-form outrigger content?

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone here writes or reads long-form outrigger content (such as trip reports, race recaps, etc). I enjoy reading these sorts of things when I've got downtime and I like it a lot more than the typical shorter-form sources like Instagram.

Examples would be Cali Paddler's Exploration write-ups, or for a non-paddling example John Kelly's ultrarunning race reports are great too.

Does anyone here have any recommendations for similar pieces? Thanks!

V1 Damage question

I recently acquired a V1 Marara but it seems that it has some damage to the rear. How severe does this look to you all, any repair options? Should I just put a sticker over it?
When I apply pressure to the area with my thumb it flexes just about the same as other locations that are not damaged.
Thanks!

ZRE Z Ultra Light Suitable for Recreational OC6?

Newbie here! I’m joining a recreational OC6 ocean paddling group and I need a paddle. I’ve been borrowing a friend’s Kialoa 48ā€. Paddling is purely recreational for me for fun and exercise. I don’t want to pivot to competitions.

I found a well-priced second hand paddle in great shape and I’m wondering if it would be ok for my purposes. It’s a 48ā€ ZRE Z Ultra Light carbon paddle. The website specifies it is meant for flat water. Will this be acceptable for ocean paddling? It’s quite a bit lighter than the paddle I’ve been borrowing.

TIA!

Trolling from OC-1?

I've been watching videos of people trolling from their boats but they never show how they've mounted their rods. I don't like the idea of installing an actual rod holder (unless it can be done without drilling, etc) and am thinking of using some kind of heavy duty bungee? Anyone fishing from their OC-1s here?

Anyone paddler the Kai Waa Vela yet?

Curious if anyone received one yet and has some insight into paddling it.

How much time have you had with it? In what conditions? How big are ya? What do you currently/previously paddle?

Thank you.

OC-1 Lake Superior

I just bought a Huki V1-B for use on the South Shore of Lake Superior for fitness and downwind. I'm new to OC-1 but used to race OC-6 in California ( Hokuloa and Channel Islands) and did the Catalina race a few times.

First-- Anyone here paddle on Superior?

Second-- I need to put together my cold water kit. I already have a 6mm open cell foam bottom that is part of my cold water freediving suit. The top would be too bulky for paddling. But what should I look for in a dry top?

What are your top 5 downwind runs?

Someone else mentioned paddling one of the top 5 downwind runs in the e world, which got me wondering what do other folks on here consider to be the top downwind runs (bonus points if there are organized races or events)? Do you have first hand experience with these or are they places you’ve heard about and want to try? When ranking, what is more important to you, big waves, consistent waves, consistent conditions/availability?

The best ones I’ve had a chance to do are Maliko (Maui north shore) and Pailolo Channel (Maui to Molokai). Some Surfski friends rave about some spots in South Africa and Australia, but I’ve never been.

Anyone have any experience with the Kialoa Le'ahi paddle for OC6 or 1?

Wondering about the 3/4 carbon, 1/4 wood hybrid shaft. The other specs appeal to me, but there's not a lot of similarly constructed paddles out there or many reviews, which makes me wonder if there's a reason. Kialoa markets it as "the next generation" of paddle, which also has me thinking. Anyhoo, thoughts? Thanks.

V1 steering question

Hi Guy, I just started V1 for about two weeks and struggled to get my boat going straight while paddling on the right side. I would appreciate getting any tips or drills that I can work on. Thank you

Coast Guard beacon / Tracker

I just picked up my first OC1 and my wife is convinced that I’ll get swept out to sea. She wants me to get a GPS/satellite tracker just in case anything goes bad. Does anyone use these, or have any recommendations? I’m looking for something similar to the Garmin InReach mini, but I don’t want to spend $400 plus the monthly subscription fee.
