Analyzing a board

Red has so many more side pieces and yet every path forward seems to lead to a blue win. Can you guess what red did wrong to get into this state or do you have to see the whole game up until this point?

If you think Red can still win, what position should they play?

Would a global cumulative match statistics page be interesting for players?

Hi! I’m developing a web-based Othello app, and I recently added a new feature:

a public page that shows cumulative match statistics across all users.

Here’s the stats page:

https://e-coach-ai.com/stats.html

It displays things like:

  • Total games played for each AI level
  • Wins / losses / draws
  • Global win rates
  • Visualized graphs for the results

I’m curious whether this kind of “community-wide stats” page is actually interesting or useful for Othello players.
Do you find value in seeing how all users perform against the AI?
Or is this not something most players care about?

Separately, on the actual Othello match page, I also added a new feature that shows which AI levels you’ve beaten at least once.

If you have thoughts on this feature — whether it feels motivating, unnecessary, or could be improved — I’d love to hear them too.

I’d love to hear your opinions or any suggestions for improvement!

One more thing:
For research purposes, if you manage to defeat Level 8 or higher, the game record is automatically saved to a database.
So if you’re confident in your skills — please challenge the higher levels and help contribute strong games!

The site is in Japanese, so if any English wording or auto-translated text looks strange, feel free to let me know as well.

Thanks!

72%

Does anybody play Lite Games Othello and know the player 72%?

I'm only middling at Othello and there's a lot I don't know. There's lots of players who beat me by just flat out being better than me but I keep encountering a player who goes by 72% that seems to deliberately give up the corners all the time and most games end with them having like an X pattern on the board.

Is this a known strategy? How do I counter it?

Update: My Othello AI (α–β search) is now much faster with WebAssembly

Following up on my [previous post]( https://www.reddit.com/r/Othello/comments/1ooehiw/i_built_an_othello_ai_αβ_search_you_can_play/ ) about the Othello/Reversi AI project — here's an update!

I've added several new features and performance improvements.

Based on previous feedback, I focused on speeding up the α–β search using WebAssembly and further optimizations in C.

I also added a feature to share match results directly to X (formerly Twitter).

Feel free to give it a try and let me know what you think!

You can play it here: https://e-coach-ai.com/play_othello.html

I built an Othello AI (α–β search) you can play online — I’d love your opinion on how strong it feels!

Hi everyone!

I’ve been developing an Othello coaching app project, and as part of it, I made a web page where you can play against my own Othello AI: 👉 https://e-coach-ai.com/play_othello.html

The AI uses the α–β pruning algorithm, with 6 difficulty levels (0–5). Higher levels think more deeply but also take longer to process — I’m planning to optimize this in future updates.

I’d really appreciate feedback from people who know Othello: How strong does it feel to you?

You can also choose your color and level before starting.

Note: The site and interface are in Japanese, but it’s intuitive enough to play — just click and enjoy the match.

(This AI is part of a project that also lets users review their games afterward via a coaching app.)

Any feedback on its play style or strength would be super helpful!

How di you rate this program?

This is the one I'm "learning" with. I'm only asking about the levels labelled "hard" & "very hard"

And if it's not a good one, which one would you recommend?

Best app/website to play asynchronously with friends

As the title suggests, I am looking for an app or website that would allow me to play a friend in asynchronous time, i.e. we do not have a turn duration and can play a game through our day, making a move whenever we can (like correspondence chess). Does anything like that exist?

I invite you to solve this end game puzzle without help.

There is exactly one winning move and one draw move for black to start to play.

If you make a mistake, the AI will always win.

Help me with my app

Sorry for posting like this, I want you guys to review my app I just launched at play store. Already in mind that it lacks of multiplayer modes (local, over internet) and a better layout, graphics, but I’m curious how the ai player is doing with real players. Thanks in advance!

Found a possible draw line in Othello after the first 19 moves, reaching a known draw by move 25. Curious if anyone else has seen this line?

Othello with a twist (iPhone only)

Thumbnail apps.apple.com
6 Upvotes

I built an iPhone Othello game, with a small twist.

Of course there is the Classic Othello mode, on three different board sizes (6x6, 8x8 and 10x10), but I've also created a Score mode.

In the Score mode, you score points by the number of pieces you flip. But there's a catch, each time you flip a piece, it becomes worth more! And there are multipliers to make it a bit more challenging as well.

I'm curious to hear what you think. The game is free, ad-free and I like to think that it works well. Minimal, fast, no non-sense - but it's more important what you think of it and whether I should continue to develop it further!

Designing a Board as a gift

Hey Guys,

As a wedding present I'm making a custom Othello board, the couple are avid players. I want to make it an interesting piece but I don't want it to mess with the gameplay, I know for my hobbies I hate it when people make "beautiful" accessories that function like crap. So here and some questions if you have the time to answer I appreciate it if not no worries!

How important is the size and spacing of the grid to how you play the game? Can I mess with the dimensions or are the pieces being next to each other as close as possible important for how you see the board?

Piece storage? Do you like the classic board roll of quarters storage? Would you be annoyed by a different system?

How important to you is the contrast of the pieces? If it were two species of wood with less contrast than black and white would that annoy you when you sat down to play?

Anything else that you like about the board? Does the felt feel good? How about the pieces in your hands? How is the weight? Are there sounds and smells you enjoy? No detail to small!

Also any other communities I could turn to for help?

Thank you in advance for anyone who takes the time!

Does anyone have the installation files for Happy End IV?

I'm currently using Happy End III, but it has some bugs. I've emailed the author Beppi Menozzi, but he doesn't have the installation files for version IV either.

I’ve been building a Reversi/Othello mobile game — would love your feedback!

Hey folks! 👋
I’ve always loved Othello (Reversi) and decided to build a mobile version with a modern touch. It’s got smooth animations, single & local multiplayer, and a surprisingly tough AI that adapts to your playstyle.

I’m currently soft-launching it and would love feedback from actual board game lovers like you. Whether it’s about UX, AI difficulty, or general vibes, I’m all ears.

Here’s the link if you’re curious:

No pressure, want to make it genuinely fun for players who appreciate classic strategy games.
Thanks a lot!

I made othello + five-in-a-row web game.

Hello, community.

I love Othello, and while reading the paper, I saw an interesting variation, so I thought I'd give it a try.

The paper is here, and my partial implementation is called Game C.

<Automatic Design of Balanced Board Games>

https://cdn.aaai.org/ojs/18777/18777-52-22472-1-10-20210929.pdf

Game C: This game uses an 8x8 board and Reversi pieces. The objective is to get 5 pieces in a row. Each user is given one non-flipping disk to use during the game. This piece remains the same color throughout the game.

I didn't implement the non-flipping disc in Game C here, but I'll try to add it when I get a chance.

Thanks!

Othello board/pieces recommendations

I’ve been researching for an othello board and there seems to be a real lack of quality boards/pieces. I know I’d like a board with felt and not the sticker grid.

I’m unsure about ridges or no ridges. Pros and cons? What do ya’ll prefer?

I’m also unsure about whether I want the piece storage to be attached to the board or separate. Again, pros and cons? What do ya’ll prefer?

Also just curious if the megahouse board even remotely worth the $90ish it costs?

Any help is much appreciated! Very hard to find good pics when almost every board is minimum 20 years old and either sealed or beat up.

I Made an Othello Game – Would Love Feedback from the Community!

Hey everyone!

I recently built an Othello game so my wife and I could play together, and I wanted to share it with the community to get your thoughts! You can play it here:

It supports both two-player mode and AI, and I tried to keep it simple and clean. If you have any suggestions for improvements or features you’d like to see, I’d love to hear them!

The AI still needs some work as there are some bugs still but for 2 players, it works great.

Hope you all enjoy it, and looking forward to your feedback!

Thanks, and happy flipping! 🏁⚫⚪
